Exterior
The exterior has received a significant upgrade over the previous model with a new bumper, restyled grille (the ONYX XT 4x4 giving off Mercedes G-Class vibes), redesigned Isuzu badge, LED headlights with bi-beam technology, LED daytime running lights and repositioned fog lights.
Around the back it's a lot more appealing than the outgoing MU-X with a mid-level spoiler, new badging and combination taillights linked by tailgate garnish.
It also gets new wheel designs with multi-spoke 18-inch alloys for the LS and LSE models and black 20-inch rims for the ONYX XT.
There are eight colour options with a new Biarritz Blue and Eiger Grey Metallic, with the latter looking particularly striking.

There are new interior colours for the door cards and armrests, and the leather seat patterns have been reworked.
The infotainment system has been upgraded to a nine-inch display and is wireless, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.
The LSE and ONYX XT gain a new digital 360-degree Surround View Monitor with the LS model retaining an analogue reverse camera.
The camera has a new underfloor view that enables the driver to see and navigate around obstacles when venturing off the beaten track.

The engine options and power outputs remain the same with Isuzu's trusted 3.0-litre diesel engine and the 1.9-litre variant.
Image: Supplied
Engines
The engine options and power outputs remain the same, with Isuzu's trusted 3.0-litre diesel engine delivering 140kW and 450Nm of torque available across the range.
The 1.9-litre variant with 110kW and 350Nm is available in the LS model with only a 4x2 option, while the 3.0-litre is offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, with a diff-lock and low-range transfer case on the 4x4 variants.
Both engine options are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
ONYX XT
The range-topping ONYX XT takes the fight directly to the Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport and Ford Everest Sport.
It's set apart by a gloss black grille, metallic Light Magnetite bumper, gloss black roof rails, black side mirrors, gloss black door mouldings, rear liftgate garnish, metallic Light Magnetite accent panels below the bumper and unique XT badging on the grille and bodywork, as well as the afore-mentioned black 20-inch alloys.
Inside, there's a soft-touch covered dash, red ambient lighting on the dashboard and doors, red stitching on the seats, the steering wheel is finished in piano black with a metallic lower-centre ornament, the rear gets extra USB Type-C ports, and the driver's MID features unique XT graphics with red accents.
Driving
Overall, it's a very neat package which we explored on the launch route in and around the Cape Winelands.
The wireless Android Auto connected effortlessly and, unlike some cars, stayed connected throughout the day.
It's a very comfortable driving position once you've adjusted the electronic seats with a clear view over the bonnet.
Build quality feels solid, and thank goodness the regular settings are buttons and dials so you don't have to go digging around on the touchscreen.
It's not the quietest engine on start-up, but once warmed up, it purrs along nicely with slick gear changes throughout the rev range.
When pressed hard to pass traffic there's some engine noise in the cabin but it calms down again quickly and with three of us in the car conversation could be had at normal volumes.
The rear passenger with us had more than enough legroom with the seat adjusted for my tall frame.
The updated Isuzu MU-X takes on the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest.

Toyota Gazoo Racing ends Safari Rally fourth stage on a high

With one stage left, the factory entered GR Hilux EVO place 12th and 13th in the overall standings. Teenager Saood Variawa and French co-driver Francois Cazalet on their way to winning stage four of the South African Safari Rally. Picture: Toyota Gazoo Racing Stage 4 of the South African Safari Rally delivered a day of redemption and reward for Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa, with Saood Variawa and Francois Cazalet claiming a commanding stage win and teammates Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy (#211) claiming the final step on the podium. Longest stage done The 693 km route, the longest of the rally, included a 470 km road section and a 224 km competitive stage around the greater Sun City region. The looped route took competitors across a mix of fast-flowing bushveld roads, rocky sections, sandy tracks and open savannah. Despite not feeling 100%, teenager Variawa produced a masterful drive to win his first stage of this year's event. 'We actually had a malfunction with the torque meter, which caused us to lose a lot of power. So, in the last 100 km we pushed the car to the limit, knowing we didn't have full power. ALSO READ: Stage 3: No let up for Toyota Gazoo Racing on South African Safari 'We managed to hold the lead and I'm super happy – with the team, the car, myself, my navigator – everything played out well today,' said Variawa. Variawa's time of two hours 09 min 05 sec was enough to secure the stage win by 58 seconds over the X-Raid Mini of Guillaume De Mévius and Xavier Panseri. For Botterill and Murphy in the second Toyota GR Hilux EVO, stage four brought a further confidence boost. 'We made a few mistakes early on which cost us time, but in the second half of the stage, Dennis and I were absolutely flat-out trying to make up ground. We had no idea where we stood, but I knew we were pushing. To finish third, considering where we were this morning, I'm really pleased.' One stage left Their performance saw them cross the line one min 19 sec behind their Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa teammates. While the individual stage results were cause for celebration, the overall classification remains tightly packed. Variawa and Cazalet moved up to 12th overall, 14 min 23sec behind the leaders. Botterill and Murphy improved to 13th, 18 min 01 sec adrift. With one stage remaining, the rally remains wide open for gains, and potentially, heartbreak, as competitors prepare for the final test: stage 5, a 222 km loop around Sun City featuring a 111 km special stage broken into two liaison sections. US Senate blocks California's electric vehicle mandate

WASHINGTON - US senators blocked California's landmark mandate phasing out gas-powered cars, dealing a blow to the state's move towards electric vehicles in a pointed rebuke of Democratic climate change policies. The Republican-led Senate revoked a waiver instituted under then-president Joe Biden that allowed the state to set aside national pollution standards for cars and set its own more stringent regulations. But the Senate's rubber stamp of a House-passed bill was immediately set for a challenge, with California's liberal government announcing it would sue President Donald Trump's administration. California Governor Gavin Newsom said the vote was a "big day for big oil, big day for GM and Toyota, big day for China. "Terrible day for your kids, terrible day for air quality, terrible day for innovation and entrepreneurship." The state, especially its biggest city, Los Angeles, historically tolerated the nation's worst smog before decades of efforts to clean up. Part of that push was a mandate ensuring that a third of new 2026 model cars sold in the state must be zero-emission, rising to two-thirds in 2030 and 100 percent in 2035. Republicans in Washington argue that this is costly, unworkable and anathema to consumer choice. "California got special permission from the Biden administration to ban gas-powered cars. Because of their market share, this would impact the entire nation," said right-wing Utah Senator Mike Lee. "But Gavin Newsom doesn't get to ruin 49 other states." Republicans argue that the Congressional Review Act gives them the right to overturn California's carve-out on a simple majority vote. But Democrats say Thursday's move was illegal, as nonpartisan watchdogs including the Government Accountability Office and the Senate Parliamentarian said the CRA could not be applied to waivers. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said he would sue over the Senate's move. "The president and his administration are attempting to trample on our authority to maintain long-standing clean vehicle standards and keep our air breathable," he said. "We're not going to let that happen... Our lawsuit will be about ensuring California can enforce its state laws." The Senate has only overruled its parliamentarian a handful of times since the role was launched in the 1930s. Trump harshly criticised electric vehicles (EVs) as he sought reelection, despite significant federal funding allocated to projects in Republican districts, where thousands of jobs are expected to be created. He took aim at the sector as part of his flurry of executive orders on his first day in office in a bid to ensure what he called a "level" playing field for gasoline-powered motors. But he has not been consistent in his opposition -- even taking time out of his schedule to promote his ally Elon Musk's prestige EV company Tesla at the White House. US EV sales reached 1.3 million units last year, up 7.3 percent from 2023, according to Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book, but automakers have recently scaled back investments, pointing to slowing demand growth.

The Nissan Micra has been reborn as an all-electric hatchback

After a brief hiatus the Nissan Micra has returned as a suave-looking electric B-segment hatchback. If it seems like you've seen it before, that's because you have — this sixth-generation model is a reclothed version of the new Renault 5. While the two cars bear a striking resemblance, the Micra sports a more rounded front end with a longer, taller bonnet and a pair of oval LED daytime running lights that pay homage to headlamp design of its third-generation predecessor. It also gets a noticeably more pronounced front spoiler, chunkier wheel arches lipped with protective black cladding and something Nissan calls an ice cream scoop: a 1cm wide indent that runs from the front to the rear of the back passenger door. It's apparently reminiscent of the shape a scoop would make if dragged across the surface of untouched ice cream. 18" alloy wheels are standard and customers can choose between three model grades (Active, Iconic or Sport) and a total of 14 contemporary exterior colours. The cabin is a dead ringer for the one doing duty inside its Renault 5 sibling and shares the same basic layout and digital accoutrement, with two large 10.1" screens fitted to the dashboard. The one in front of the driver acts as an instrument cluster while the other is a dedicated multimedia touchscreen with a bright, flowing interface supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Running the latest iteration of NissanConnect, it further offers Google built-in services giving owners access to a plethora of downloadable apps, various media streaming services and voice control functionality (Google Assistant). Subtle differentiation is provided by a moulded outline of Japan's most famous landmark, Mount Fuji, incorporated into the storage space between the front seats; three options of upholstery trim (Modern, Audacious or Chill) and customisable ambient lighting with 48 hues. While the front cabin is fitted with ample storage bins for oddments, the boot offers 326 l of luggage space. Added practicality is offered by the 60:40 split folding rear seats. From launch, Nissan is offering the Micra with a choice of two powertrains, both of which use front-mounted synchronous electric motors of varying output. Tipping the scales at 1,400kg and juiced by a 40kWh battery pack, the entry-level model makes 90kW and 225Nm of torque and offers a maximum driving range of up to 308km. The 1,524kg flagship gets a larger 52kWh battery and puts out a more substantial 110kW/245Nm while range increases to 407km. DC rapid charging up to 100kW is supported (15% to 80% charge in 30 minutes) as is bidirectional AC charging, which effectively turns the Micra into a four-wheeled power bank — something that would make it most useful during load-shedding. Unfortunately, as is the case with the Renault 5, it's not going to be making its way to South Africa any time soon. European deliveries, however, will commence later this year.
