Connections Work hosting second-chance career fair in Reading
Connections Work will hold its Spring Career Fair on March 31 for those involved in the criminal justice system.
The job fair at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading from 9 a.m. to noon is for anyone who is on probation or parole or has past involvement in the criminal justice or domestic relations systems.
'In my ongoing conversations with local employers across all industries, the need to attract and retain talent in a challenging labor market remains their major barrier to current hiring needs and future growth,' Dan Fogarty, chief operating officer of the Berks County Workforce Development Board, said in the organization's event announcement.
Fogarty said employers will be able to meet with a diverse group of eager job-seekers who might be a good match for their current and future needs.
Connections Work anticipates about 30 area employers will attend, including Morgan Truck Body, Tower Health, Brentwood Industries and New Castle Lawn & Landscape, along with several local social service providers.
Officials said the participants offer second-chance employment opportunities that can be life-changing.
Volunteers will help job seekers fill out applications, conduct mock interviews and provide general job readiness coaching.
The Berks County Library System will provide laptops so job seekers can complete online applications.
The organization partners with employers to learn about their specific operations and provides referrals of people who are a good match for their hiring needs.
'Like any other individuals, individuals who have had involvement with the justice system can add value to the workplace,' said Nikki Schnovel, co-executive director. 'In fact, in some cases, employers find they are more motivated and eager for success than their counterparts.
'They are ready to make a change and live a productive life and are very appreciative of those who help make that happen.'
Employers interested in attending the job fair should contact HelpWithHiring@ConnectionsWorks.org or call 484-260-3860 extension 3024.
People with criminal justice involvement who are looking for help finding a job can call 484-260-3860, go to ConnectionsWork.org, or stop by the office on the fourth floor of 19 N. Sixth St., Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, and programs and services are free.

New road plans to be examined at public enquiry
A public inquiry is to be held into plans to build the North Hykeham relief road near Lincoln. The new road would link the A46 with the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, completing the ring road network around the city. At the enquiry, proposals will be put before an independent planning inspector who will hear evidence before deciding if Lincolnshire County Council can purchase land and gain access to other sites. Those objecting to having their land used or purchased will have the opportunity to put forward arguments. The inquiry starts on 1 July at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Lincoln and is due to last two weeks. Objections to the new road have been received from agricultural landowners, businesses and statutory bodies, according to the council. Councillor Michael Cheyne, executive member for highways, said: "Despite an inquiry being required, we are continuing to progress with the scheme with the intention of starting construction works later this year. "This scheme is essential to supporting the growth of the area and keeping the county moving, so I look forward to seeing work commence soon." According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the majority of funding towards the project has yet to be confirmed. The new Reform UK administration has confirmed that it will keep the county council's commitment to providing the remaining £90m. If construction starts on time, the road is expected to be opened by late 2028. Abilene Southwest Rotary Club to Honor Top Students
ABILENE, Texas – The Abilene Southwest Rotary Club will host its annual Top 50+ Banquet on Thursday, May 15th, recognizing the top graduating high school students from across Taylor County for their academic achievements. The event, which will be held at 6:30 pm at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Downtown Abilene, celebrates students who rank in the top 3% of their class. Honorees from Abilene ISD, Wylie ISD, and local private and charter schools are invited to attend, along with their parents and a teacher or mentor who played a key role in their academic journey. The Top 50+ Banquet was established by the Rotary Club in 1960 to recognize academic excellence with the same enthusiasm often reserved for athletic achievement. Since then, the event has grown to include over 400 guests annually and is now a cornerstone of Abilene's educational recognition efforts. The Rotary club believes that emphasizing education helps students better identify the scope of their world and prepares them for meaningful lives and promising careers. In addition to honoring students, the banquet connects graduates with community leaders and professionals from a variety of industries. Donations exceeding event costs benefit local nonprofit organizations focused on youth education.
