DMK casts Kamal Haasan in a Rajya Sabha MP role. Aim to undercut Vijay's political debut?
In Parliament, the DMK expects Kamal Haasan to mince no words when it comes to taking an anti-BJP stance on issues like language, culture and alleged discrimination against states in south India not ruled by the BJP. The DMK has always taken a hard position when it comes to a perceived imposition of Hindi and Haasan with his ability to communicate in different languages, including Hindi, will be able to present the DMK's viewpoint.Haasan is also in sync with the Dravidian ideology on most issues and therefore there aren't likely to be any fault lines emerging when he is sent to the Upper House with help from the DMK.But more importantly, from a Tamil Nadu point of view, the NDA has extended an invitation to actor Vijay to join the alliance ahead of the assembly elections in 2026 and though it won't admit it, the DMK would be a trifle worried. For one, the ruling party may find itself short of starpower on the campaign trail and that is where Kamal Haasan comes in. Although the veteran actor is no longer in the same league as Vijay in terms of street popularity, especially among the youth and women, speaks with gravitas and is considered more intellectual, he is still a big name to present as a counter campaigner to Vijay.advertisementThe party realises that if the AIADMK and BJP are able to ensure the differences at the constituency and cadre level are addressed, they would be able to give the DMK alliance a good fight. But Edappadi Palaniswami is aware of how his late leader Jayalalithaa won the 2016 battle. At that time, a Third Front called the People's Welfare Front led by the likes of Vaiko, Vijaykanth and GK Vasan contributed to the DMK defeat by splitting the anti-AIADMK votes. There is a real threat to Vijay and his TVK doing a Third Front now. Hence, the wooing of the 'Ilayathalapathy' Vijay, despite the many anti-Vijay comments made by Tamil Nadu BJP leaders in the past.advertisementInterestingly, one of the options reportedly on the table is to offer one of the two Rajya Sabha seats which the AIADMK can win in the elections in June to Vijay or one of his TVK nominees. But for someone who aims to be chief minister of the state, taking a Rajya Sabha seat would adversely affect Vijay's carefully cultivated larger-than-life image. However, if such an option is being seriously discussed by people who matter, it indicates the intense desire of the BJP to get Vijay into the NDA fold. The choice of Haasan and three others for the four Rajya Sabha seats the DMK can win has also put the spotlight on the DMK's alliance politics. MK Stalin chose not to renominate Vaiko despite the seasoned political voice he has been and known to pack a punch in his speeches in the Rajya Sabha. That makes it evident that the DMK wants Haasan to do much of the heavy lifting during the election campaign, appealing to the educated and urban constituency voter in Tamil Nadu. What will be music to Haasan's ears would also be the fact that he would now find himself rubbing shoulders with his favourite music composer and colleague from the Tamil film industry, Ilaiyaraaja in the Rajya Sabha. The musical genius is a nominated member of the House and, though the duo agree on most things musical, the political twain shall not meet.(Views expressed in this opinion piece are those of the author)Tune InTrending Reel

Govt slams Opposition for spreading lies over Maharashtra election data
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) slammed the Opposition for disrupting Rajya Sabha proceedings, saying it was spreading lies on the Maharashtra election data, a day after research organisation CSDS issued a public apology acknowledging errors in its poll data. Follow the Parliament Monsoon session Day 20 LIVE: August 20, 2025 As the Rajya Sabha reassembled post-lunch to discuss the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2025, Opposition MPs staged protests demanding a discussion on alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections. Despite Vice-Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita's repeated appeals to maintain decorum, Opposition members continued raising slogans of "vote chori bandh karo" (stop vote theft). Also Read | Parliament passes bill to set up IIM in Guwahati Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, "We are raising this issue every day. We want to share about 'vote chori'... This is an important issue... We have to save democracy and the Constitution." Mr. Pradhan made his opening remarks on the bill amid the sloganeering. When the Chair did not accede to their demand, Opposition members staged a walkout from the Upper House. The Union Minister continued his speech and said, "Opposition is doing harmful work as they are not letting Parliament function. Parliament functions with help of poor taxpayers' money." He accused the Opposition of wanting to discuss "one fact posted by one person in the CSDS related to the Maharashtra election with malafide intention". "There is one person who has deliberately spread confusion in the country and the Opposition, especially Congress, is further circulating it," the Education Minister said. Aiming CSDS, which receives funding from the government's Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Mr. Pradhan said, "Taking funds from the Government of India, it is not proper to challenge democracy." The Minister noted that ICSSR has taken cognisance of the issue and will take appropriate action. "The head of that institution (CSDS) has issued a public apology saying the facts were wrong," Mr. Pradhan added. The Education Minister accused the Opposition of creating a negative atmosphere and preventing meaningful legislative discussions. "Can Congress tell whether it supports IIM Guwahati or not?" he questioned, adding that the Opposition's stance has "hurt Assamese people".

With one exit and two additions, Goa cabinet sees a rejig
Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Wednesday resigned from the Goa cabinet, citing personal reasons, paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle in the state. In a letter addressed to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Sequeira, who was also holding Law and Judiciary, Legislative Affairs and Captain of Ports portfolios, said he was 'compelled' to take the decision to resign from the Council of Ministers due to 'personal reasons'. Two new Ministers – Ramesh Tawadkar and former chief minister Digambar Kamat – will be inducted in the Sawant-led cabinet, and the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Raj Bhavan at noon on Thursday. At a press conference at the Secretariat, Sequeira said, 'I am not giving (the resignation) on health grounds because I believe I have improved drastically. I am resigning due to personal reasons. I think I will be relieved of a lot of responsibilities that I had taken on my shoulders. I have no issues with the party. I will continue to be a member of the BJP. I was toying with the idea (of resigning) for some time. I received whole-hearted support of the CM in my tenure.' Sequeira denied he was under any pressure to quit. On whether a Catholic legislator will replace him in the cabinet, he said, 'I do not know. This is a question that you should pose to the chief minister.' In his resignation letter, Sequeira thanked Sawant 'for giving me the opportunity to serve under your leadership.' Sequeira's exit leaves two cabinet berths vacant. The first fell vacant after former Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude, a tribal leader, was dropped from the cabinet in June after he levelled corruption allegations in the department of Tribal Welfare – a portfolio held by Sawant. Senior BJP tribal leader Ramesh Tawadkar, the Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly, confirmed that he would be inducted into the cabinet. Tawadkar, who represents Canacona constituency, said he will resign from the Speaker's post on Thursday, and thereafter he will be sworn in as a minister. 'I wanted to continue as the Speaker, but the party has decided to give me this responsibility. The party organisation wanted me to take this post. So, I have to abide by the party's decision,' he said. Sequeira will be replaced in the cabinet by former chief minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. Sequeira and Kamat were among the group of eight turncoat MLAs who switched over to the BJP in September 2022. 'I am getting an opportunity to serve the people of Goa. I am thankful to God, the central leadership of the party, and the chief minister,' Kamat said.

‘Privilege, not a right': US tightens citizenship rules with new ‘good moral character' test
Saying it's reserved for the 'best of the best,' the Trump administration has unveiled new rules that make it harder for legal immigrants to qualify for US citizenship, expanding the long-standing requirement of 'good moral character' into a sweeping review of applicants' behaviour, values and community ties. 'US citizenship is the gold standard of citizenship — it should only be offered to the world's best of the best,' US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) spokesman Matthew Tragesser said in a statement to CBS News. 'Today, USCIS is adding a new element to the naturalization process that ensures America's newest citizens not only embrace America's culture, history, and language but who also demonstrate Good Moral Character.' The directive, issued on Friday by USCIS, the agency that oversees the nation's legal immigration system, marks the Trump administration's latest move to tighten access to US immigration benefits. Traditionally, legal immigrants with US permanent residency or green cards, have been able to apply for citizenship after a three- or five-year period, provided they pass English and civics tests and demonstrate 'good moral character.' For decades, that requirement was generally satisfied if applicants avoided serious crimes such as murder, aggravated felonies, drug offenses, or being deemed a 'habitual drunkard.' But the new policy expands the definition, saying officers must go beyond a 'cursory mechanical review focused on the absence of wrongdoing.' Instead, they must conduct 'a holistic assessment of an alien's behavior, adherence to societal norms, and positive contributions that affirmatively demonstrate good moral character.' Officers are instructed to put 'greater emphasis' on positive attributes such as community involvement, family caregiving, educational attainment, lawful and stable employment, tax compliance, and the length of time spent in the US. At the same time, they are also ordered to apply 'greater scrutiny' to conduct suggesting poor moral character, even when it falls short of crimes. That includes 'reckless or habitual traffic infractions, or harassment or aggressive solicitation.' The policy also directs officers to weigh evidence of rehabilitation where wrongdoing is present, such as completing probation, paying overdue taxes or child support, and letters of support from community members. According to the guidelines, 'aliens applying for naturalization must demonstrate that he or she has been and continues to be an individual of good moral character'. In another setback for immigrants seeking to live and work legally in the United States, Trump's administration on Tuesday, announced that applicants will now be screened for signs of 'anti-Americanism.' The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said officers will examine whether applicants for immigration benefits, including green cards, have 'endorsed, promoted, supported, or otherwise espoused' anti-American, terrorist, or antisemitic views. 'America's benefits should not be given to those who despise the country and promote anti-American ideologies,' USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said in a statement. He further clarified, 'Immigration benefits, including to live and work in the United States remain a privilege, not a right.' The USCIS has not issued a detailed list defining what constitutes anti-Americanism, leaving uncertainty about how and when these directives will be applied. Over the past decade, the US has naturalised between 6,00,000 and 1 million immigrants annually, according to USCIS data. While the Trump administration's hardline stance on illegal immigration — from deploying troops at the southern border to expanding deportations — has dominated headlines, it has also steadily pursued restrictions on legal immigration. Those include scaling back refugee admissions, scrapping Biden-era visa programs, tightening vetting procedures, and broadening social media reviews of applicants.
