Taiping black dust pollution affects 500 residents, DOE investigates
Perak Department of Environment director Datuk Dr Mohammad Ezanni Mat Salleh confirmed receiving complaints from affected residents on 4 August.
The DOE deployed air monitoring equipment, including the Air Quality Monitoring Device (GRIMM) and Portable Multigas Analyser (CEREX), at two locations between 6 and 12 August.
'Observations at the monitoring sites found no smell, smoke, dust, or open burning during the period,' Mohammad Ezanni stated during a press conference at the Aulong Assemblyman Service Centre.
Air monitoring data from 6 to 11 August detected only two dominant gases: acetylene and hydrogen cyanide.
The department expanded investigations using drones within a five-kilometre radius of potential pollution sources.
'Enforcement operations are underway at a factory in the Kamunting Industrial Area suspected of causing the pollution, pending chemical analysis results from the Chemistry Department,' he added.
Mohammad Ezanni warned of strict action against violators of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Amendment) 2024.
Kampung Assam Kumbang village head Sharudin Ahmad Sani described residents' struggles with the pollution.
'Residents must close windows during windy conditions as black dust enters homes, accompanied by a foul smell that dissipates after rainfall,' he explained. – Bernama

Man charged with murder of ex-wife in Pulau Dayang Bunting
LANGKAWI: A man was charged in the magistrate's court here today with the murder of his ex-wife in the waters off Pantai Oak, Pulau Dayang Bunting, two weeks ago. Mohamad Shafiq Ma Ean Chaiyan, 26, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read out before magistrate Nurul Natasha Rizal. Earlier, Ain Nur Sofea requested that no bail be granted, as the case is being investigated under Section 302. The court allowed the application and fixed Oct 14 for mention, pending the submission of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) report from the Chemistry Department.

Pillion rider dies in North-South Expressway crash
REMBAU: A 69-year-old pillion rider died when her husband lost control of their superbike and crashed. Deputy Rembau OCPD Dept Supt Azmi Ali said Zainab Abdullah died at 11.10 pm along KM231.6 of the North-South Expressway. He said her husband, Ahmad Abdullah, a retired army member, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Alor Gajah Hospital. Preliminary investigations indicate he lost control and crashed along the emergency lane. Blood samples from the couple were taken and will be sent to the Chemistry Department for toxicology analysis. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

779 e-waste containers seized since 2023
A total of 779 containers containing electronic waste (e-waste) were seized up to May this year since 2023, with 583 of them inspected by the Department of Environment (DoE). Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who has taken over the responsibilities of the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, said 119 notices had been issued to importing companies to return the containers, in line with the Environmental Quality Act 1974. This, he said, led to 294 containers being sent back to their countries of origin. "This is in line with the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, which requires prior written consent from the DoE for all cross-border movements of scheduled waste, whether for import, export, transit or transshipment." Johari said in a written parliamentary reply. "Integrated operations of this nature will continue to be carried out to curb offences involving the illegal processing of imported e-waste." He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) on measures to curb the illegal disposal of e-waste by unlicensed premises. Johari (BN-Titiwangsa) said the ministry remained committed to tackling crimes involving the illegal processing of smuggled e-waste. "The government is also stepping up efforts to combat illegal e-waste processing plants through integrated operations, such as Op Hazard 1.0 and 2.0, conducted nationwide in February and June this year." A total of 122 premises had been raided under the two operations. Op Hazard 1.0 targeted 53 premises and seized 9,356 tonnes of e-waste, while Op Hazard 2.0 targeted 69 premises, with 2,069 tonnes of e-waste seized. Johari said control mechanisms at border entry points were being strengthened, with enforcement enhanced in collaboration with agencies including the Customs Department, the DoE and port authorities. "This includes closer cooperation with international organisations such as the Basel Convention Secretariat, the Asian Network and Interpol to share information on ships suspected of carrying e-waste bound for Malaysian ports."
