QPR confirm new head coach as Arsenal great joins coaching staff
A day after announcing Marti Cifuentes has officially left the club, Queen's Park Rangers have confirmed the hiring of Julien Stephan as the club's new head coach, with Arsenal great Steve Bould also coming aboard
QPR have appointed Frenchman Julien Stephan as their new head coach.
The 44-year-old's arrival comes a day after Marti Cifuentes officially left the club having been placed on garden leave following the penultimate game of the Championship season. Stephan has previously worked in Ligue 1 in two spells with his boyhood club Rennes, with whom he won the Coupe de France in 2019, and one with Strasbourg.
'I feel very proud and excited to join QPR,' said Stephan on QPR official website. 'QPR is a historic club with strong values and passionate fans, so I feel honoured. I wanted to come here because I know there's a lot of passion around the club and around the team, and I feel very lucky to discover that.
'There is something unique about English football. The intensity, the atmosphere, the passion of the fans also, the tempo of the game, the culture around the club all make it a very stimulating environment for a coach.'
Rangers finished 15th in the table but won only two of their final 12 games under Cifuentes, with a 5-0 home loss to Burnley the final straw.
CEO Christian Nourry said: 'Julien's track record of developing young players into world-class talent was a major factor in our decision to appoint him. Alongside this, both at Rennes and Strasbourg he achieved historic league success.'
QPR also confirmed the appointment of Steve Bould as head of defensive coaching and first team coach.
The former Arsenal, Stoke and Sunderland defender will coach from first team level through to the club's academy age groups alongside his work as a first team coach.
Speaking about his aims, Bould told the club's official website: 'Firstly, the first team defensively to become better. If the individuals within that squad can get better defensively, that's the number one priority.
'Secondly, I want the younger players further down the line to become great players or great defenders.
'That's the brief. It's a big brief and I'm looking forward to it immensely.'

Taylor Hinds to leave Liverpool Women after five years and join Arsenal
Arsenal are to sign the Liverpool vice-captain Taylor Hinds on a free transfer when her contract expires at the end of June, with the 26-year-old having decided to join the European champions. The left-back played for Arsenal as a youngster before joining Everton in 2018 and then moving across Merseyside two years later. She has spent the past five years with Liverpool, helping them finish as high as fourth in the Women's Super League in 2024. Sign up to Moving the Goalposts No topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women's football after newsletter promotion The Jamaica international, who represented England at youth international level, is understood to have been offered a new deal by Liverpool but, while they will naturally be disappointed to lose a senior player, they understand and respect her decision to move to play Champions League football next season. Hinds was a key part of the Liverpool team that won promotion to the WSL with the second-tier title in 2022, and she played in every league game for that season and the following top-flight campaign. The addition of Hinds strengthens Arsenal's options at full-back, on both sides, because although she has predominantly played on the left, she is also capable of providing cover as a right-back or right wing-back. Meanwhile, the Arsenal full-back Laura Wienroither – who can also play on both sides – has been linked with a move away following her loan spell at Manchester City in the second half of last season. Hinds received widespread praise and support in March after she spoke up about being subjected to 'sexually inappropriate comments' from a spectator during Liverpool's Women's FA Cup win at Arsenal. The incident occurred while Hinds was receiving treatment on the pitch and a member of the crowd was removed from the stadium by stewards. Both clubs offered her their 'full support', while Hinds said at the time: 'Together we can continue to make our sport better both now and for the years to come.' Meanwhile, Liverpool are understood to be getting closer to appointing a new manager, having been without a long-term replacement for Matt Beard since his departure in February.

Rocky Clark proud to be back at Twickenham despite loss
England's second most capped rugby player ever, the 44-year-old Clark was the player coach for Buckinghamshire as they lost out to defending champions Yorkshire 29-19 in a game that was still in the balance until the final minutes. In fact, it was only a penalty from Alex Taylor-Roberts with the final play of the game that ended any hopes of a Bucks' comeback. And while Clark was inevitably disappointed to be on the wrong side of the result, she was also thrilled to be back at Twickenham once again. She said: 'I'm buzzing to be back here. I've done it so many times before but every time it's really special. I'm so proud and privileged. I've been here twice as a coach but to be here as a player and a coach with the Bucks county women, I'm really happy. 'It was a bit of a shock to be back out here. I've kept my boots on but dropped down the levels, into the Championship with Buckingham Swans, the passion and the love is still there and I'm still pretty decent in the scrum so I'll take that.' Yorkshire started strongly with a try from Becky Patrick following smart offloads by Mary Stones and Katie Patrick in the build-up. That score was quickly cancelled out by Bucks skipper Nicky Gross, who burrowed over from close range after a huge charge from Clark. Yorkshire reclaimed the lead when Steph Tharne was fastest to her own chargedown of Caz Collie, only for Sian Mills to get over for Bucks. Collie's conversion put them 14-12 up. Clark then saw yellow for a high tackle, with Stones taking advantage of the extra player to put Yorkshire in front. But it was all square at the break at 19-19 thanks to Collie's fine individual score, fending off two defenders on her way to the line. Taylor-Roberts got over early in the second half with a clever dummy and go and having resisted long periods in the first half, Yorkshire did it again in the second. The crucial spell came with 10 minutes to go, and after they held out there, it was left to Taylor-Roberts to seal victory, leaving Clark to reflect on how close Bucks had come. She added: 'I'm really gutted but it was a great game of rugby. They were a phenomenal team and really hard to stop. We just couldn't fire all our shots. We had opportunities and a few times our processes went out the window. 'So we're disappointed but it's great for women's rugby to play before an international game, we are absolutely stoked and it meant so much coming to Twickenham, the Home of Rugby. 'If we'd scored with 10 to go, I think we would have won the game, but you win some, you lose some. I'm well-versed at that. Now we collectively come together, make the most of our experience, make memories and have a great time.' And what of the future, well Clark has no plans to hang up her boots any time soon. She added: 'I've no plans to retire, I said I'd be the oldest player so you might see me waddle out again!' Tony Bloom out to ‘disrupt' Scottish football landscape after Hearts investment
The Brighton owner has ploughed £9.86 million into the Jambos in return for a 29 per cent stake in non-voting shares. As part of the deal, Bloom is entitled to one seat on the Hearts board as a non-executive director and he has appointed James Franks, a legal and strategic business consultant with whom he has worked closely for almost two decades, to the role on his behalf. The English businessman is confident Hearts – who also have a partnership with his data analysis firm, Jamestown Analytics – can ruffle feathers within Scottish football at a time when no club outside Celtic and Rangers have won the top-flight league title for the past 40 years. We are delighted to confirm that the process for Tony Bloom's investment in the club is now complete. The club would like to formally welcome Tony to the Hearts family and looks forward to working with him in forging a long and successful relationship. ℹ️ ⬇️ — Heart of Midlothian FC (@JamTarts) June 25, 2025 'I am absolutely thrilled to be investing in Hearts,' Bloom told Hearts' website. 'I firmly believe in the club's ability to disrupt the pattern of domination of Scottish football which has been in place for far too long. 'This great club has a bright future and I look forward to seeing that unfold in the months and years ahead. The appointment of James as my representative on the board underlines the importance I attach to my investment in the club. 'James has been a trusted associate of mine for many years and I believe that his wealth of experience in the football industry and strong business acumen will be a tremendous asset to the board and to the club.' Chief executive Andrew McKinlay welcomed the culmination of a deal which has been in the pipeline for more than a year. 'It is with great pleasure that I can now, on behalf of everyone at Heart of Midlothian, officially welcome both Tony and James to the club,' he said. 'Today's announcement is the culmination of our fans' belief and support, and I thank them for their backing. When Tony's investment proposal became public in May, it captured the imaginations of our supporters, as demonstrated by Foundation of Hearts members voting 98.5 per cent in favour of it. 'A tremendous amount of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to turn a proposal into a reality and I'd like to thank everyone involved for delivering what is a hugely significant moment in this club's history. 'Again, I speak on behalf of everyone at Hearts when I say we are eagerly anticipating working with Tony and James as we embark on this journey together.' Franks added: 'I am honoured to become a board member at Hearts. From my first visit to Tynecastle in March 2024 as the initial step in the investment process, it was obvious to me just how special the club is. 'All of my subsequent visits and my interactions with the management team at the club and with the Foundation of Hearts have strengthened that feeling and I'm proud now to call myself a Jambo. I welcome the opportunity to play my part in an exciting new chapter in the history of this wonderful club.'
