'Daily Show' Spots The 1 Telling Sign That New Pope Is An 'Everyday American'

Yahoo09-05-2025

'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Thursday mocked conservatives for throwing a 'tantrum' over the social media history of Pope Leo XIV, including one post that criticized Vice President JD Vance back in February.
'Ooh! The new pope does not like JD Vance, he really is an everyday American,' quipped Lydic of the newly-named pontiff, the first one to be born in the United States.
She then addressed Leo with a nod to one of Pope Francis' final visitors, 'Be careful, though, Father — if you piss off JD Vance, he's going to pay you a visit.'
Lydic, after noting that the pope called for 'unity and peace on Earth' in a speech on Thursday, turned to right-wing media figures like former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) who were quick to criticize the Chicago-born pope for not giving his address in English (he delivered it in Italian and Spanish).
'I don't know how you claim that this is an American pope if he won't even speak in his native tongue,' Santorum said. 'That — that, to me, was very disturbing.'
Lydic played with Santorum's language frustrations.
'Yes, yes. How dare you? If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for the pope. Shame! Shame on you!' she joked.
'Come on, does it really matter what language he speaks? It's church, you're going to be sleeping through it anyway.'

Musk's Empire at Risk After Trump Feud Opens Multi-Front Fight

What began as Elon Musk's embrace of right-wing populism has become a defining — and potentially harmful — chapter in his business career. By endorsing Donald Trump's MAGA movement and far-right parties in Europe, Musk alienated a big portion of his original customer base, eroding Tesla's brand, sales and market share around the globe. Then came this week's rupture: a personal and public breakup with Trump that prompted threats of retaliation from a man with control over the world's most powerful government.

Court Fight Over Trump Ending a Tariff Exemption Goes Forward

A court fight over President Donald Trump's decision to end a US policy that exempted small-value packages from China from tariffs is moving ahead over the administration's opposition. A federal judge on Thursday denied the US Justice Department's request to pause litigation over what's known as the 'de minimis' tariff exception while a broader fight over Trump's move to raise global tariffs on imported goods is pending. Amid that fight, the president's tariffs remain in effect.
