'Daily Show' Spots The 1 Telling Sign That New Pope Is An 'Everyday American'
'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Thursday mocked conservatives for throwing a 'tantrum' over the social media history of Pope Leo XIV, including one post that criticized Vice President JD Vance back in February. 'Ooh! The new pope does not like JD Vance, he really is an everyday American,' quipped Lydic of the newly-named pontiff, the first one to be born in the United States. She then addressed Leo with a nod to one of Pope Francis' final visitors, 'Be careful, though, Father — if you piss off JD Vance, he's going to pay you a visit.' Lydic, after noting that the pope called for 'unity and peace on Earth' in a speech on Thursday, turned to right-wing media figures like former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) who were quick to criticize the Chicago-born pope for not giving his address in English (he delivered it in Italian and Spanish). 'I don't know how you claim that this is an American pope if he won't even speak in his native tongue,' Santorum said. 'That — that, to me, was very disturbing.' Lydic played with Santorum's language frustrations. 'Yes, yes. How dare you? If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for the pope. Shame! Shame on you!' she joked. 'Come on, does it really matter what language he speaks? It's church, you're going to be sleeping through it anyway.' Check out more of Lydic's Thursday monologue on 'The Daily Show.' 'Daily Show' Cuts Deep Into Trump Administration's 'Very Sad' Barbie Talk
'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Wednesday clowned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after he defended President Donald Trump's comments that children may just have to live with fewer dolls as a result of his tariffs. Bessent — in a Fox News appearance on Tuesday — said he would reassure a little girl with two dolls instead of 30 that she'll have a 'better life' than her parents and will have 'economic freedom' because of the president. 'Yes, if there's one thing children love, it's the concept of economic freedom,' Lydic quipped. She added that it's 'very clear' that Bessent was never a little girl, as they would 'never be on board' with affording fewer toys. ADVERTISEMENT Lydic, doing an impression of a little girl, declared, 'I don't want that stuff, I want Barbies. You can't make economic freedom scissor each other.' She later identified the 'one job' Bessent would be 'even worse' at: impersonating Santa Claus. Moments earlier, Lydic noted that Trump's doll example wasn't hypothetical. Mattel — the maker of Barbies and other popular toys — announced this week it would raise prices on select products to offset higher costs tied to Trump's tariffs. 'Yes, they're raising prices on Barbie, even she has to cut back. She had to move out of Barbie's Dreamhouse and into Barbie's dream studio apartment with two roommates,' Lydic quipped. 'Her pink convertible is now a 2007 Toyota Tercel, it's very sad. Come on, don't make Barbie tighten her belt even more, she only has a one-inch waist.' Desi Lydic 'Foxsplains' A Petty GOP Obsession
Desi Lydic mocked Republicans for their sudden obsession with dress and manners on Tuesday. (Watch the video below.) 'The Daily Show' correspondent targeted conservative reaction to the White House meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week. As Lydic often does with right-wing matters, she 'Foxsplained' it. When Trump and Vice President JD Vance tried to bully Zelenskyy into capitulating to Russia even though it attacked Ukraine, Lydic noticed it was Zelenskyy's failure to wear a suit or say thanks while he kept his arms folded that riled many conservatives. She showed a montage of petty gripes about Zelenskyy's wardrobe and body language and then let loose. 'This is how you sit with the president,' she said with a come-hither hair flip and 'hello, Mr. President.' 'You don't cross your arms in this administration,' she continued. 'In this administration, you keep one arm at your side and one arm straight in front of you.' A quick cut to Steve Bannon and Elon Musk making Nazi-like salutes followed. 'The strategy's simple,' she said. 'Donald Trump is trying to win the war for Ukraine by convincing it to surrender everything.' ‘The Daily Show's Desi Lydic Cringes at Musical Protests Against Trump: ‘Had to Cleanse My Ears With an RFK Jr. Speech'
As Donald Trump and Elon Musk continue gutting federal programs and increasing unemployment numbers as a result, protests have sprung up around the country, with some of them even getting musical. Although, it hasn't been good music, if you ask 'The Daily Show' host Desi Lydic. During Thursday night's headlines, the Comedy Central host first zeroed in on a recent Capitol Hill protest by federal workers, in which they sang Pete Seeger's 'Which Side Are You On?' with slightly modified lyrics. Of course, these weren't professional singers, so hitting the right notes was a less than successful endeavor. 'Which key are we on?' Lydic sang intentionally poorly. 'Sorry, but that sounded so bad I had to cleanse my ears with an RFK Jr. speech.' Lydic then begged to see a protest that didn't involve singing, at which point footage from another musical protest, this one at the Kennedy Center, popped up — though this time, those involved were dancing to the music, not singing. 'Is this how white ladies protest now? 'I demand to dance for the manager!'' Lydic joked. 'You know what? At least they're getting out there. And these are regular citizens doing their best. It's not their responsibility to block the Trump agenda, that's on the Democratic Party.' But, turning to what Democrats have indeed been doing, Lydic was less than impressed. She first called out California governor Gavin Newsom's new podcast, in which he plans to interview political figures from both sides of the aisle. 'I can't believe they rebuilt L.A. that fast. Glad you have the time,' she quipped. 'I mean, forgive me for not subscribing to the Gavin Newsom pomade hour, but I think the moment calls for a little more than polite conversation.' At that, Lydic shifted into clips of Dems like Rep. Jasmine Crockett and more being blunt to media, offering messages of 'f— off' and similar variations. 'Ooh! You guys kissed your lobbyists with that mouth?' Lydic joked. 'That's right, the Democratic strategy, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Look, I get the spirit behind it, but cursing in politics doesn't exactly age well. The Gettysburg Address wouldn't have been the classic it became if it went 'Four score and a f—ton years ago…'' You can watch the full segment from 'The Daily Show' in the video above.
