The event was organised by the Child in Need Institute (CINI) under its G-SAFE+ initiative, in collaboration with RINPAS and other community stakeholders.
The aim of the event was to create a space for dialogue on the legal, psychological, and infrastructural needs of the transgender community while celebrating their identity and resilience.
Citing the poor implementation of the Supreme Court's judgment that mandated transgender welfare boards in every state, Jharkhand high court Ritwik Sinha said, "We are talking about rights, but they remain largely on paper.
There is zero follow-up."
Mental health emerged as a key focus, with statistics revealing that mental health issues are four times more prevalent among transgender individuals. Dr Manisha Kiran, the HOD of Psychiatric and Social Work at RINPAS, attributed high school dropout rates to bullying and lack of support. Discrimination, emotional negligence, minority stress and rejection, verbal and sometimes physical abuse, along with stigma, push the trans community into anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse.
"The govt should actively involve members of the transgender community in lawmaking for the community and needs to invest in research in this area, as the lack of data in the region hinders effective policy making," said S J Sangeeta of CINI.
Amarjeet Shergil of Utthaan CBO, a group led by LGBTQIA+ members from Jamshedpur, lamented the lack of basic facilities in Ranchi for transgender community. "Jamshedpur and Chaibasa have separate washrooms, but Ranchi doesn't. We're seen as provocateurs — people murder, rape, and abuse us, but no police reports are filed," she said, calling for dedicated transgender cells in police stations.

Gaekwad royals to launch app for LGBTQIA persons

Vadodara: Many LGBTQIA persons often struggle to find employment despite being properly qualified or find it difficult to access proper medical treatment. This is about to change, as the Gaekwad royal family is set to launch a first-of-its-kind mobile app dedicated to the LGBTQIA community. "We plan to launch the app in Navratri this year. The app is ready and we will soon start promoting it, followed by registration and verification of users," said Radhikaraje Gaekwad, a member of the Baroda royal family. Those registering on the app, which is called 'Gazra Mitra', will get easy access to doctors for medical treatment and lawyers for legal advice. Members of the community also struggle to find accommodation, so the app will help with that as well. Two years ago, Radhikaraje learned about a member of the LGBTQIA community who died because she was hesitant to visit a doctor. She decided to create a platform for the betterment of this community and began working on it. "While working for the community, I learned that many members are still hesitant to avail of the services that we get so easily. I decided to step in and offer a helping hand. We are starting the app service in Vadodara and will take it to other cities in the future," Radhikaraje added. From contact numbers of supportive advocates and doctors to counsellors and other experts, the app aims to be a one-stop solution for the community. An LGBTQIA cafe — the state's first — run by the royal family's trust, Maharani Chimnabai Stree Udyogalaya, is already offering employment to community members. Gaekwad launched this cafe two years ago and it has become a popular hangout spot for Barodians.

West Bengal sees 25 drowning deaths daily, half of them children: Survey

Over 25 deaths by drowning on an average are reported every day in West Bengal, with half of the deceased being children, a recent survey has said, while advocating more public awareness to prevent such incidents. The numbers add up to over 9,000 people losing their lives annually in West Bengal due to drowning, the survey conducted last year on a population of about 18 million people of the state revealed. The study also found that children between one and nine years of age were the most vulnerable and recorded a mortality rate of 121 per lakh, which is among the highest ever recorded globally. The findings of the survey, conducted by NGO Child in Need Institute (CINI) and The George Institute for Global Health, was released in Kolkata on Friday and discussed on the occasion of World Drowning Prevention Day. The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) also participated in the discussion. The day served as a global call to action, urging governments, communities, and individuals to implement proven strategies to prevent drowning and save lives, especially among children in high-risk regions like rural West Bengal. Founder Secretary of CINI and eminent physician Dr Samir Chaudhuri told PTI that the actual number of deaths per day is higher than 25 as deaths in many of the households are not reported. "Of the three lakh drowning deaths reported worldwide every year, 18 per cent of the fatalities are reported in India alone. West Bengal accounts for over 17 per cent of those deaths taking place in the country," another CINI official said, quoting the survey conducted during March-December, 2024. CINI CEO Indrani Bhattacharya said, "It has been observed that children between the age of one and four years drown in nearby water bodies when their mothers are busy performing household chores. At times, older children between the age of four to ten years drown while playing, swimming, bathing and cannot be revived without CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) method." The report states that most of the deaths take place between noon and 2 pm when the parents are away working in fields or doing other manual jobs. "The blame for those accidents usually falls on the mother, which is unfair," Bhattacharya said.
