Russell Martin rapidly defies his own Rangers transfer expectations amid curious case of Nobel Mendy

Gers went from nothing imminent to a deal almost done and replacement identified while another collapsed abruptly On Friday, Russell Martin was preaching patience over Ibrox exits as he expected those he wanted to move on to take their time and hang around until nearer the end of the transfer window. ‌ Within 24 hours, he confirmed that one had a foot out the door and Rangers were set for a nice little earner with two weeks left until deadline day. ‌ Martin hasn't hidden the fact that he needs to trim his squad after eight signings so far this summer. ‌ But as he previewed Saturday's Premier Sports Cup win over Alloa, he didn't sound like a man who was just waiting on i's being dotted and t's being crossed before sending someone on their way. "No, I think we're in the same situation really," he said. "There's some guys who probably know their future lies away and I'm sure their agents are working hard on that. "But apart from that I think we're pretty much as is and that might not change until towards the end of the window when circumstances change and teams need something late on. It's often the way." However, within 24 hours it was all changed with Jefte on the verge of a £6million move back to Brazil with Palmeiras, which had started to emerge last week. "Jefte was in yesterday (Friday), and then by yesterday evening, he's maybe not going to be here moving forward because it's a good deal for him and the club. 'So we'll see what happens over the next couple of days with that. We have to be ready to replace him, and we always have been ready." Ready, it seems, means trying to do a deal for Brentford left back Jayden Meghoma. ‌ 'So Jayden, a player we know from Southampton, spent a year with us as a young boy, training every day, understands the work, top talent, plays for England at all the youth levels," said Martin. 'Brentford signed him for a lot of money for a teenager, and he went on loan last year in the Championship and did really well. 'So he's a player we know and like, and hopefully at some point he'll be a Rangers player and you'll know that when he is.' ‌ There's also the curious case of Nobel Mendy. The Betis defender was going to Rayo Vallecano. Then he performed a u-turn and was set for Ibrox. We had Betis directors saying they expected the deal to happen. Martin said on Friday that he'd 'never spoken to Nobel Mendy" and if that's the case, then holding your breath on any deal being resurrected wouldn't be the wisest move.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney reveal ‘hands off' approach to Wrexham

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, co-owners of Wrexham AFC, have stated they do not make any "football decisions" at the Championship club. Under their ownership, Wrexham have achieved a historic feat by securing three successive promotions through the English football league system. The Hollywood owners attended Wrexham's first home Championship game since May 1982, which saw the Red Dragons lose 3-2 to West Brom. Reynolds described their management approach as "hands-off," focusing on listening, learning, and supporting the club while telling its story. Wrexham's commercial success, boosted by the owners' celebrity status and the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary, has facilitated significant investment in the squad, including breaking their transfer record three times this summer.

A former Hearts striker could fetch a Scottish club over £500k as Portsmouth become the latest team rumoured to be in for his services. Makenzie Kirk was a regular goal scorer in the Jambos youth ranks but failed to make a consistent breakthrough into a senior setting. After a loan spell at Hamilton Accies brought eight appearances no goals, he signed permanently for St Johnstone last summer, where the forward has now netted 14 times, including four goals in the Premier Sports Cup this season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It has sparked interest and after Peterborough United came on the scene this month, English Championship side Portsmouth are now said to be keen, according to The News. Read More Offer rejected for former Hearts forward amid Premiership, Championship and EFL interest Makenzie Kirk to Portsmouth latest It's claimed that 'the Blues have targeted the St Johnstone forward as an exciting, young option to add to their striking group.' Competition will be heated though as 'they face competition from League One side Peterborough United, with there also interest from the Scottish Premier League and Bristol Rovers in the 21-year-old.' The Courier suggest St Johnstone could bank half a million from a deal, saying 'the pursuit of Makenzie Kirk is set to go over the £500k mark, with Portsmouth poised to join the race for the St Johnstone striker.' Kirk came off the bench in Saturday's League Cup defeat against Motherwell. Boss Simo Valakari said midweek: 'The club rejected a bid for Makenzie. It is normal football business – he is a good player, he scores goals, and he is young. We knew there would be interest in him this summer. Rightly so. Nothing has changed. He's our player, he is working hard and we will see what happens. At this moment he's our player. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad St Johnstone stance on Makenzie Kirk 'We are not desperate to sell. That's how it is. We know how difficult it is to find strikers – it's the hardest thing in football, scoring goals. At the moment we have a very good situation with our forwards. We have different types of players and have options depending on what the game needs. It's a good sign for our club that we have players attracting interest from other teams. Makenzie came back at the start of pre-season in good shape. 'He had built himself up more in the gym. And he has been very good in working on his weaknesses and improving his strengths. Yes, there is interest in him, and you could say that might be a distraction. But Makenzie has been very mature in the way he has handled it. He has been happy to leave it to his agent and his dad so he can concentrate on his football. That's exactly what you need to do.' Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson said of possible transfer plans amid the links to the former Hearts man: 'We have targets. Obviously we go for our first choice in any position and hope that we get them, but if we don't we work through our list.'
