MBRF kicks off participation at Turin Book Fair 2025 with a seminar on ‘The Legacy of Muslim Sicily' encyclopedia

Mid East Info15-05-2025
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) commenced its participation at the Turin International Book Fair 2025, one of Europe's most prestigious intellectual and cultural gatherings, which is taking place from May 15 to 19, 2025. MBRF's participation at the event reflects its ongoing efforts to expand its global footprint, promote its knowledge-based initiatives and showcase its leading intellectual publications across science, academia, and publishing.
In line with its participation, MBRF organized a dedicated seminar exploring the recently published 'The Legacy of Muslim Sicily' encyclopedia. The session featured H.E. Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF, alongside Dr. Attilio Petruccioli, Professor in the Department of Architecture and Building at the University of Rome, and Dr. Francesco Violante, Associate Professor of Medieval History at the University of Bari, Italy.
During his keynote address, H.E. bin Huwaireb stated that the encyclopedia is the outcome of eighteen years of meticulous academic research, spearheaded by the late renowned thinker and scholar Dr. Salma Khadra Jayyusi. The publication includes 30 scholarly essays by 29 researchers from Italy, the Arab world, Europe and the Americas. Furthermore, H.E. highlighted that apart from recording Sicily's Islamic era (831 -1091 CE), the encyclopedia also depicts the remarkable civilizational legacy that influenced various aspects of the island, including its architecture, sciences, arts, language, and social structures, marking a lasting impact on this Mediterranean crossroads.
In addition, H.E. bin Huwaireb emphasized that MBRF functions under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote cross-cultural dialogue and mutual understanding. He further highlighted the pivotal role of knowledge in facilitating civilization exchange, noting that MBRF aims to spotlight the lasting contributions of Arab and Muslim civilizations for human progress.
He also said that the release of the encyclopedia in English, with an Italian edition to follow, will open new pathways for global scholarly exchange, providing historians and researchers with an authoritative resource on a pivotal yet frequently overlooked chapter of Arab-European history. While Andalusia has traditionally occupied the spotlight in discussions of Islamic influence in Europe, Sicily's equally rich and transformative legacy is now being acknowledged as an integral part of our shared civilizational heritage.
Dr. Attilio Petruccioli, a contributor to the encyclopedia, said: 'I am honored to be a part of this pivotal academic work that re-examines the architectural and urban legacy of the Arab-Islamic civilization in Sicily. My essay in the publication is centered on analyzing architectural structures, urban planning, and landscapes, using a methodology aimed at reconstructing typological processes and challenging long-standing preconceptions that have often hindered research in this field.'
He said: 'I have included tangible examples of various sites and buildings that highlight Arab cultural presence in Sicily that are overlooked or completely attributed to the Norman period. Furthermore, I have supervised in-depth studies on Islamic water infrastructure and gardens, which reflect the established archaeological and architectural data. Through this publication, we have also introduced new perspectives that require more research. We believe this book goes beyond mere documentation of the past; rather, it serves as an open invitation to revisit history through a scientific and methodological lens, fostering a deeper and more balanced understanding of the civilizations that have shaped Mediterranean identity.'
Meanwhile, Dr. Francesco Violante explained that the publication indicates a significant move towards a thorough understanding of the historical and cultural link between the people of the region, beyond the conventional narratives that have often excluded the contributions of Islamic civilization from the European narrative. This initiative revisits history based on diverse scientific sources to highlight the pivotal role of Muslim Sicily in shaping geopolitical, economic, and cultural exchange, and the broader Mediterranean identity. The encyclopedia also offers a fresh perspective on the experience of pluralism and cultural coexistence, providing valuable contemporary insights into fostering mutual understanding and dialogue. He added, 'We hope this academic endeavor, encompassing studies in history, art, architecture and society, will act as a catalyst for greater scholarly collaboration and inspire new research initiatives aimed at reviving our shared heritage, grounded in the values of peace and knowledge.'
MBRF's participation in the Turin International Book Fair is a remarkable milestone in its ambitious efforts to boost its international influence and reinforce its position as a leading global hub for knowledge. Furthermore, it signifies MBRF's unwavering commitment to establishing strategic partnerships and exchange expertise in alignment with Dubai's vision to become a global powerhouse of intellect, creativity and sustainable development.

Mabany Edris to begin Koun project deliveries in Ras El Hekma by 2026

Mabany Edris Developments will commence the first handovers of its flagship Koun project in Ras El Hekma in 2026, according to Mohamed Edris, Chairperson of the company. Edris also announced the unveiling of the project's first fully finished show unit, highlighting the rapid pace of construction on site. Located at kilometer 201 along the Alexandria–Matrouh Road on Egypt's North-Western Coast, Koun spans 110 feddans, with 20 feddans allocated to its first phase. The project sits at an elevation of up to 34 meters above sea level and features a 10-feddan central lagoon. Once complete, Koun will offer more than 1,500 residential units, including one- to three-bedroom chalets, as well as twin houses, townhouses, penthouses, and standalone villas. Edris pointed out that the North Coast real estate market increasingly appeals to Arab buyers and Egyptians living abroad—especially in the wake of the landmark Ras El Hekma investment agreement with the UAE. He added that the number of units launched in the area this year is expected to double compared to 2024.

Bedouin Demand for Heavy Gold Jewelry Spurs New Production Lines in Egypt

Waleed Farouk Imad Saad, a gold market expert, noted that in recent years Egypt has witnessed a growing demand from Bedouin communities and Arab tribes—particularly in Matrouh, Sinai, and the oases—for large, heavy gold jewelry. This trend has encouraged many companies and factories to develop dedicated production lines to meet this demand, as gold increasingly serves both as a savings vehicle and as a symbol of social status. Saad explained that some companies have introduced oversized gold pieces made of 24-karat gold, with weights ranging between 30 and 100 grams, crafted in specific shapes and colors to appeal to Bedouin buyers. Deep-rooted Traditions, Renewed Tastes Bedouin culture in Egypt has long been associated with heavy adornments, traditionally relying more on silver, beads, and coins sewn into veils and traditional garments. However, social and economic changes have pushed gold into a more prominent role, particularly in bridal trousseaus and wedding ceremonies. In Siwa, for example, large silver discs such as Adreem and Agraw have gradually been replaced by modern gold jewelry that retains traditional symbolism but with lighter weight. In Sinai, coin-studded veils remain part of ritual dress, though they coexist with the more widely adopted Egyptian-style 'gold bridal set'. Matrouh and the Awlad Ali Tribes: Heavy Sets Still Reign In Matrouh, home to the powerful Awlad Ali tribes, families preserve the tradition of presenting heavy gold sets (shabka) as an essential element of marriage, alongside local customs such as al-siyaj and al-kiswa. These sets often include bulky suites or thick bangles, valued not only for their cultural symbolism but also for their savings function and ease of resale—marking a family's social standing. Jewelry Companies Adapt to the Market According to Saad, this rising demand has driven major jewelers and retailers to produce broad bangles and massive gold sets that cater specifically to Bedouin tastes. For these communities, large pieces are considered more than mere adornment—they are a store of value. Some factories have even dedicated production lines to creating oversized solitaire sets or twisted heavy bangles, aligning with Bedouin and Arab aesthetics, in contrast to urban preferences that lean toward lighter, more practical designs. Social and Economic Value The significance of large gold jewelry extends beyond ornamentation: it reflects family prestige and serves as a form of social display during special occasions. Economically, heavy gold acts as a reliable hedge against currency fluctuations and inflation, making it increasingly attractive in recent years. Today, the Egyptian gold market reveals a clear divide: urban consumers favor simple, lightweight designs, while Bedouin and tribal consumers prefer heavy pieces. This divergence has opened new opportunities for manufacturers and retailers, who see Bedouin tastes as a promising niche to expand production and strengthen their market share. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
