Penang to Xi'an flights set for June return, KL route in the works, says Tourism Malaysia
GEORGE TOWN, May 30 — The direct Penang-Xi'an flight route operated by Loong Air is expected to resume soon, offering a boost to tourism industry players.
Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the agency is in close communication with the airline, which is targeting a June resumption.
However, the exact date has yet to be confirmed as discussions are ongoing and both parties are closely monitoring market response.
'Loong Air also plans to launch a direct Kuala Lumpur–Xi'an route with three weekly flights. The inaugural flight is expected in late June and is in the application and preparation stage,' he said in a statement today.
Yeoh also emphasised Tourism Malaysia's commitment to expanding international flight routes beyond Kuala Lumpur to ensure that all states benefit from Visit Malaysia Year 2026, thereby driving local economic and tourism growth.
'We will continue working with airlines to secure more direct international connections beyond Kuala Lumpur, enabling more tourists to access various parts of Malaysia directly,' he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered that over RM20 million from misappropriated sukuk funds meant for a Klang Valley highway project were allegedly used for gambling activities. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the discovery came during further investigations into the high-profile corruption case, the New Straits Times reported. 'I have been briefed by my investigation officers that more than RM20 million may have been spent on gambling activities. 'We also found 300 bottles of luxury alcoholic beverages were found in a storage facility,' he was quoted as saying. Azam said the authorities are still tracing assets both locally and abroad that will be frozen or seized to assist the probe. So far, 45 witnesses have provided statements, while the Tan Sri under investigation remains hospitalised at a private medical centre. On Sunday, the MACC froze and seized RM85.6 million in assets and accounts related to the case involving the alleged misuse of sukuk funds. Among the seized assets were 14 personal bank accounts with RM4.5 million, eight company accounts with RM33 million, and luxury vehicles worth RM7.65 million. Authorities also confiscated handbags valued at RM3 million, luxury watches worth RM7 million, and properties estimated at RM24.5 million. The MACC believes that sukuk funds — raised through shariah-compliant bonds — were channelled to a company owned by the Tan Sri and diverted for personal use rather than the intended highway construction. Last month, four individuals including a Datuk Seri were arrested over false claims involving RM360 million linked to the same RM1.3 billion Klang Valley highway project dating back to 2016–2017.

Cops open 12 probes into phishing scam disguised as lucky draw in Terengganu
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 2 — The Terengganu police have opened 12 investigation papers (IPs) over alleged phishing in a lucky draw contest. British backpacker, 25, goes missing in Kuala Lumpur after last seen at Bangsar bar
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — A 25-year-old British backpacker has gone missing while on a solo trip across South-east Asia. He was last heard from on Tuesday, May 27, after sending a photo from Healy Mac's Irish Bar in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. According to the Daily Mail, Jordan Johnson-Doyle's phone went dead on May 30 — three days after his last known contact — and all attempts to reach him since have failed. Doyle has been travelling the past year while working remotely as a software engineer for a US-based company. He was said to have arrived in Malaysia on May 17 after visiting Vietnam and was believed to be staying at the Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang. His last conversation with his mother on May 26 was described as routine. His mother, Leanne Burnett, who is flying to Malaysia with other family members to search for him, said: 'I have been feeling just sick, numb. I just want to get over there, find him and bring him home.' She was also quoted as saying: 'If he was to lose his phone and laptop, if someone had stolen that off him, he knows my number by heart and he would contact. He'd find a way to get hold of us.' Merseyside Police, the British Consulate, and Malaysian authorities. His last known location was tracked via Find My iPhone to a block of flats near the Bangsar bar, but the signal has since stopped.
