FRU crash: Injured police corporal regains consciousness, under close monitoring
TELUK INTAN: Corporal Syed Isfan Syed Mohammad, who is receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) following the tragic accident that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen on Tuesday, has regained consciousness but is not out of the woods yet.
Perak Health Department director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha said the 32-year-old FRU policeman is showing good progress despite sustaining serious injuries.
"The patient has sustained multiple injuries, including damage to the lungs and diaphragm. The diaphragm is the membrane between the lungs and abdominal organs.
"There are also injuries to the liver and spleen, and most likely to the kidneys and bladder. These are in addition to multiple bone fractures, including the ribs, legs, and hips.
"When the patient was admitted to HRPB, he had already undergone three initial surgeries. So we anticipate that he will need to undergo various other necessary procedures," he said in a press conference at Teluk Intan Hospital here today.
It was reported on Tuesday that an FRU truck carrying 18 personnel from Unit 5 Sungai Senam collided with a rock-laden lorry at about 8.50am.
Eight officers died at the scene, and a ninth passed away while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital. Nine others were injured.
The FRU vehicle was returning to Ipoh after completing duties for the Chitrapournami festival when it was struck by the lorry.
Dr Feisul said he had the opportunity to visit the patient yesterday and the specialist doctors treating him reported that he is showing encouraging signs.
"Although his condition remains serious, he is making good progress and has started to regain consciousness," he said.
He added that 18 FRU personnel were involved in Tuesday's accident, which resulted in nine fatalities and nine others sustaining various injuries.
"At this time, I would like to share that three patients have been discharged. The first patient was discharged on the day of the incident itself.
"The second patient was discharged on Wednesday, and the most recent patient was discharged yesterday," he said.
He added that six people are still receiving treatment, of whom five of them at the Teluk Intan Hospital and one at HRPB.
"Of the remaining five patients at Teluk Intan Hospital, four are currently in the ICU, while one is in the surgical ward.
"The one in the surgical ward is showing good progress and may be discharged soon," he said.
