Where Will Lucid Stock Be in 3 Years?

Globe and Mail25-05-2025

Long-term investing is the key to sustainable returns in the stock market. However, with shares down 85% over the last three years, Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) highlights the risk of putting all your eggs in one basket. The once-promising automaker has shed value because of challenges like overvaluation and cash burn in the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market.
Now, with a market cap of just $9 billion, Lucid's small size sets it up for potential multi-bagger returns if management can turn things around. Let's dig deeper to see what the next three years have in store.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
Chaos can create opportunities
The top financial story so far in 2025 is President Donald Trump's trade policy, which culminated on April 2 with the announcement of massive "reciprocal" tariffs on various countries. While the final numbers are still being negotiated, there is more clarity in the automotive industry, where a 25% tariff on imported cars is now in effect (along with a complex web of levies and discounts to account for parts made outside the U.S.).
Lucid looks like a clear winner in this scenario because its U.S. cars are assembled at its factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. Furthermore, its secondary facility in Saudi Arabia could help the company dodge any retaliatory trade restrictions other countries may level at the U.S.
To be fair, no car is totally American-made. The Kogard School of Business ranks Lucid's Air Sedan at 73 on its total domestic content index. This number puts Lucid ahead of rivals such as the Porsche Taycan or BMW i7, which are both manufactured in Germany, although it falls short of Tesla's Model S, which scores an 80 on Kogard's index. Lucid's domestic content could give it a massive lead over its imported rivals, and help the company focus on beating Tesla in the domestic market.
Tesla's weakness is a massive opportunity for Lucid
For Lucid, Trump's election victory may be a gift that keeps on giving -- especially as Elon Musk (the CEO of major rival Tesla) made the ill-fated decision to be publicly involved with the administration. This decision has led to consumer backlash, sending deliveries in Tesla's "other models" segment (the Model S, Cybertruck, and Model X) down 24% to 12,881 units. Lucid competes directly with these higher-end Tesla offerings.
While Musk has vowed to step away from politics, only time will tell. Furthermore, it is unclear if the backlash will even abate. Early data shows that the company's sales are still declining in the European Union despite the new Model Y refresh, and similar trends may emerge in the U.S.
The next three years will be challenging
Despite enjoying some positive trends, Lucid isn't out of the woods yet. First-quarter earnings show that the business is still struggling to survive. While Q1 revenue increased 36% year over year to $235 million, this wasn't enough to defray production costs over overhead expenses, leading to an operating loss of roughly $692 million.
With a combined $3.6 billion in cash and equivalents on its balance sheet, Lucid has enough liquidity to sustain this level of cash burn for several more quarters. However, eventually it will need to turn to other sources of capital, such as equity dilution, which will reduce current shareholders' claims on the business and likely hurt the stock price.
Over the next three years, Lucid's future will depend on achieving economies of scale through new products like the Gravity SUV, which has helped it break into the lucrative SUV market. By 2028, Car and Driver believes it will release its new Lucid Earth, designed to take on the mass market with a starting price of less than $50,000 compared to the Gravity's $81,500. Investors may want to wait for more clarity on this model before considering a position in Lucid's stock.

Michaels completes acquisition of Joann's intellectual property and fan-favourite labels

NEW YORK — Craft labels from the now-shuttered fabrics seller Joann are making their way to a new home: Michaels. The Michaels Companies announced on Thursday that it had completed its purchase of Joann's intellectual property and private label brands — in an acquisition that arrives as the Texas-based arts and crafting chain works to expand its own fabric, sewing and yarn offerings. 'We're honored to have the opportunity to welcome JOANN customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they are looking for at Michaels,' Michaels CEO David Boone said in a statement. The deal, he added, allows the company to better 'respond to rising demand' among both new and existing customers. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The Associated Press reached out to Michaels for further information on Friday. With roots dating back to a single Ohio storefront in 1943, Joann had grown into a destination for generations of sewers, quilters, knitters and lovers of other crafts for more than 80 years. But more recently, operational challenges continued to pile up — with the retailer pointing to sluggish consumer demand, inventory shortages and rising competition. Joann announced it would be going out of business back in February, just one month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time within a year. At the time, the company said financial services company GA Group, together with Joann's term lenders, had been selected as the winning bidder to 'acquire substantially all of Joann's assets' and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all store locations. Michaels on Thursday said that its purchase of Joann's IP and private brands included the acquisition of 'Big Twist' yarns, which had become a staple in Joann stores over the years. Those 'Big Twist' labels are now being developed as part of Michaels' portfolio — and will be available in-stores and online later this year, the company said. In the meantime, Michaels has also dedicated a landing page to welcome former Joann customers online. And as part of its overall expansion into fabrics, Michaels said on Thursday that its adding more than 600 new products from new and existing brands — including quilting supplies and fabrics, specialty threads, sewing machines and more. Michaels, founded in 1973, currently operates 1,300 stores across 49 U.S. states and Canada. Its parent company also owns Artistree, a framing merchandise manufacturer. Why Broadcom Stock Slumped Today

Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO), the semiconductor company that's profited so much from the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution of late, saw its stock slump 3% through 10 a.m. ET this morning after reporting that it beat earnings last night... just barely. Heading into the company's fiscal second quarter of 2025, which ended May 4, analysts forecast Broadcom would earn $1.57 per share in adjusted profits on sales of just under $15 billion. In fact, Broadcom earned $1.58 per share, and its sales were $15 billion. Broadcom Q1 earnings Sales grew 20% year over year in Q2, setting a new quarterly record boosted by 46% year-over-year growth in revenue from AI chips. Adjusted earnings grew twice as fast, up 43%, but generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings did even better, more than doubling to $1.03 per share. (So while GAAP profits weren't nearly as good as non-GAAP, at least they're growing faster.) On the other hand, Broadcom noted that its free cash flow (FCF) in Q2 was only $6.4 billion. And while that represented 44% year-over-year growth, in line with adjusted earnings growth, it was apparently less than the $7 billion FCF that analysts had hoped Broadcom would produce. This realization seems to be outweighing the news of the earnings beat, and depressing Broadcom stock today. Is Broadcom stock a buy? Should investors be worried about this? Not necessarily. While I'm not usually thrilled to see such a large gap between GAAP earnings and non-GAAP earnings, Broadcom's generating tremendous free cash flow -- $22.7 billion over the last 12 months, or nearly twice reported net income. The stock's valuation is high; its price-to-free-cash-flow ratio is 52.5. But Broadcom is growing FCF fast enough that I think the valuation might be justified -- and Broadcom stock could still be a buy. Should you invest $1,000 in Broadcom right now? Why Concrete Pumping Stock Is Down Big Today

Economic headwinds and bad weather conspired to cut construction activity, which in turn ate into results at Concrete Pumping Holdings (NASDAQ: BBCP). Shares of the multinational concrete provider traded down 17% as of 11 a.m. ET after the company reported results that fell short of Wall Street expectations. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Headwinds weigh on results Concrete Pumping plays a key part in the construction supply chain, providing concrete and concrete waste management services at job sites in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom. But there is only so much the company can do when demand for concrete slows, a scenario that played out in the most recent quarter. The company lost $0.01 per share on revenue of $93.96 million in its fiscal second quarter ending April 30, compared to Wall Street's forecast for a $0.04 per-share profit on sales of $99 million. Concrete Pumping did a good job keeping costs in line and gross margin is actually up slightly for the first six months of fiscal 2025 compared to a year ago, but the macro story was too much to overcome. "In the second quarter, we continued to navigate a challenging construction environment, marked by persistent macroeconomic headwinds and regional weather disruptions," CEO Bruce Young said in a statement. Management is not anticipating an immediate bounce back. Concrete Pumping cut its full-year revenue forecast to $380 million to $390 million, from $425 million to $445 million, saying it is not forecasting a "meaningful" recovery in the construction market until its fiscal 2026. Is Concrete Pumping stock a buy? Even with the declines, Concrete Pumping is still a long-term winner, up 62% over the past five years. The company has a lot of debt, $387 million at quarter's end, compared to a market capitalization of $317 million, but management remains confident enough in cash flows to pursue opportunistic acquisitions and boost its share buyback program by $15 million. For investors who are bullish long-term on the need for infrastructure revitalization in the U.S. and Western Europe and who are willing to ride out a near-term storm, this decline in Concrete Pumping shares could be viewed as a buying opportunity.
