Illegal immigrants, rapists, and dealers among 632 arrested in Limpopo
More than 600 suspects were arrested during a province-wide crime blitz in Limpopo, as police launched a high-density Easter operation targeting a range of illegal activities, from murder and rape to unlicensed liquor trading and immigration violations.
A total of 632 suspects were apprehended, and two firearms were recovered as part of the joint Operation Shanela, conducted from Monday, 14 April to Sunday, 20 April 2025.

The operation comprised various SAPS units such as Visible Policing, Public Order Policing, Detective Services, the SANDF, Department of Home Affairs, members of Community Policing Forums, private security, and traffic officers.
Actions executed included:
- 34 unlicensed liquor premises closed
- 23 roadblocks conducted
- 570 premises searched
- 265 farms visited
- 213 second-hand dealers inspected
A total of 188 suspects were arrested for being illegal immigrants, 37 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, four for illegal possession of firearms, two for murder, four for rape, 30 for dealing in liquor, three for dealing in drugs, 15 for possession of dangerous weapons and 72 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
The suspects are facing charges of:
- Murder
- Rape
- Contravention of the Immigration Act
- Illegal dealing in liquor
- Robbery
- Assault GBH
- Malicious damage to property
- Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Samuel Manala, welcomed the arrests and praised the members for working tirelessly during this Easter period.

Pinetown SAPS officer to run his first Comrades
PINETOWN SAPS staff gathered in high spirits to offer their well wishes to one of their own who will run the Comrades Marathon. Detective Constable Siyabonga Sithole, who will be running his first Comrades, said it has always been his dream to run the ultimate human race. 'I was touched when I saw people living with disability starting and finishing the Comrades race, so I felt I owe it to myself to do it too.' Sithole said he started his running journey when he joined the police force in 2018. 'That's where I fell in love with sport, more especially running. Then I started with small races of 10km which I still run.' Asked how he balances his demanding job as a policeman and training for the gruelling marathon, Sithole said he trains in the afternoons after work. I also get training sometimes during the day as my job requires me to run after criminals,' he said with a smile, adding that he has prepared himself mentally to run the race. Qualifying for the Comrades is a big highlight of Sithole's life as it has changed his lifestyle positively. 'Work-wise, it helps me a lot because I keep fit, which is what my work requires. The support that I get from my colleagues is amazing, and I am growing as a person and as a police officer.' He encourages every South African to try this race at least once in a lifetime. 'This race is called 'isiko mpilo', which means 'a way of life'. I wish to further encourage youth to exercise as it helps prevent diseases.' Pinetown SAPS acting station commander, Colonel Ronnie Heeralall, said Sithole's commitment, dedication, and perseverance have paid off, thereby qualifying him to run an internationally recognised race. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has issued a stern warning to criminals—"shoot at police at your peril"—as he unveiled the province's intensified crime-fighting strategy. Speaking at the SAPS Excellence Awards, Mkhwanazi emphasized action over planning, pledging more police visibility, faster responses, and a crackdown on illegal liquor outlets driving violent crime. KwaZulu-Natal's top cop, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, outlined their crime-fighting plans at the province's excellence awards on Friday. Wedela SAPS educates learners on child safety during National Child Protection Week
In commemoration of National Child Protection Week, observed from May 29 to June 5, members of the Wedela SAPS extended their support and educational efforts to local schoolchildren. The initiative was led by Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, Social Crime Prevention Officer, who was accompanied by Sergeant Matsietsi from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The team visited Wedela Primary School, where they engaged with learners from Grades 1 to 3, delivering vital information on child safety and abuse prevention. They were joined by dedicated staff from Wedela's Victim Friendly Room (VFR): Hazel Nyembezi, Dimpho Lehoko, Thato Mogole, Athandile Sihlwayi, Tsogo Seleke, and Lubabalo Peyi. 'The purpose of the visit was to talk to the learners about child abuse and how they should protect themselves,' said Sgt. Sifuba. 'Most importantly, they must know they can report such cases, even if it's their uncle, father, brother, or neighbour who is touching them in a way they don't like.' The outreach impacted 244 learners, with the team encouraging them to speak to their teachers or ask for help in contacting the police if they felt unsafe or experienced any form of abuse. The session empowered children with the knowledge that their voices matter and that help is always available. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote awareness and ensure the safety and well-being of all children in the community.
