National Balloon Museum makes progress one-year after fire
INDIANOLA, Iowa — One year after a fire delayed the grand reopening of the National Balloon Museum, its staff is planning for a new opening day.
Last year, the Indianola museum was undergoing renovations and planned to reopen on April 6, 2024. However, an electrical fire just one week before set the timeline back.
The museum's operations manager, Kendra Minks, said that while the fire started in an outlet close to the entrance of the museum, the smoke ruined everything that was inside.
Over the last year, they stripped the building down to its studs and rebuilt, according to Minks.
The museum will still follow the same layout they planned to have last year, a timeline that will take the public through the history of hot air ballooning.
Renaissance Faire returns to Ames next weekend
The stained glass window was one of the only things that was saved in the fire, which Minks said they're grateful for because the artist who created it has since passed away.
A local artist repainted a mural at the museum's entrance, which was ruined in the fire.
They still need to finish the flooring before they can redecorate.
The total cost of restoration so far is just shy of $2 million. Minks said most of the restoration efforts came through insurance.
The community is also helping play a role in restoring the museum. Donations from the public will be used to purchase new artifacts and display items.
All the artifacts that were in the museum during the fire are currently in Michigan being restored, cleaned, and assessed. Minks said they're not sure yet how many of these artifacts will be back on display.
'We aren't totally for sure yet what everything will look like, how it will look. We'll know all that once everything returns from Michigan, and we have a chance to just look at it, feel it, touch it, and just get a feel for the condition that it's in,' said Minks.
When construction finishes inside, Minks said they will return the artifacts and decide what can stay on display. Other items will be returned to the folks who donated them.

A poker tournament and silent auction in October helped the museum raise $5,000.
People outside of Iowa are also helping. The Winker Family donated $250,000 to the museum in October.
'We were not expecting it. So, it was a complete surprise, and we were just astounded at the generosity of the Winker family and appreciate everything that they have donated,' said Minks.
Staff is tentatively planning to reopen The National Balloon Museum in time for the National Ballon Classic this year, which starts on July 25.
Community members can still donate to the museum to help purchase new artifacts.

NOAA releases 2025 hurricane forecast
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted 'above-normal' hurricane activity this summer in its annual outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. A news release from the organization published last week forecasts a range of 13 to 19 total named storms with winds of 39 mph or higher. NOAA estimated a 30% chance of a near-normal season, a 60% chance of an above-normal season and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. Of the number of storms predicted, six to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher. Three to five of those may become major category 3, 4 or 5 hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or stated in the release it has 70% confidence in these ranges. 'NOAA and the National Weather Service are using the most advanced weather models and cutting-edge hurricane tracking systems to provide Americans with real-time storm forecasts and warnings,' said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in the release. 'With these models and forecasting tools, we have never been more prepared for hurricane season.'This year's hurricane season is expected to be above normal because of warmer than average ocean temperatures, forecasts for weak wind shear and potential for higher activity from the West African monsoon, NOAA stated. ENSO-neutral conditions, otherwise referred to as El Niño and La Niña, are also optimal this year for producing storms. More on the El Niño Southern Oscillation cycle can be read here. In short, the more heat there is settling in the Atlantic Basin, the more energy there is to fuel potential storms. NOAA stated that a reduction in trade winds also allows these storms to develop without disruption. 'As we witnessed last year with significant inland flooding from hurricanes Helene and Debby, the impacts of hurricanes can reach far beyond coastal communities,' said Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm, in the release. 'NOAA is critical for the delivery of early and accurate forecasts and warnings, and provides the scientific expertise needed to save lives and property.' The release stated that 2025's hurricane season also has potential for the West African monsoon to produce tropical waves feeding into some of the 'strongest and most long-lived Atlantic storms' 'In my 30 years at the National Weather Service, we've never had more advanced models and warning systems in place to monitor the weather,' said Ken Graham, NOAA's national weather service director, in the release. 'This outlook is a call to action: be prepared. Take proactive steps now to make a plan and gather supplies to ensure you're ready before a storm threatens.'The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was particularly impactful for the transportation industry. Hurricane Helene destroyed key infrastructure in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, cutting off interstate access along I-40 for months. The interstate connection reopened in February of this year, but heavy rainfall through April and May have contributed to high water levels and additional flood damage along smaller roads in the Carolina mountains. Asheville and other smaller towns still are fighting to rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed in the storm and to secure additional funding resources for that rebuild. Carriers and logistics companies should look to SONAR critical events for tools to help plan decisions during storms this hurricane season. Al-Qaeda linked group says it carried out huge attack on Mali's army
An al-Qaeda linked group says it carried out a major attack on the Malian town of Boulikessi, and seized control of an army base. More than 30 soldiers were killed in Sunday's attack, according to sources quoted by the Reuters news agency, however that figure has not been confirmed by the authorities. On Monday the same group, Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), says it targeted the military in the historic city of Timbuktu, with residents reporting hearing gunfire and explosions. In a statement responding to Sunday's attack, Mali's army said it "reacted vigorously", before "withdrawing" - suggesting a tactical retreat. "Many men fought, some until their last breath, to defend the Malian nation," the statement added. An unnamed local source told Reuters that JNIM had left many casualties and "cleared the camp". The attacks, the latest sign of collapsing security in Mali and the wider Sahel region, came after the United States Africa Command warned about growing efforts by various different Islamist militant groups which operate in the Sahel to gain access to West Africa's coastline. During a press conference on Friday, the commander of United States Africa Command (Africom), Gen Michael Langley, described recent attacks in Nigeria, the wider Sahel, and the Lake Chad Basin as deeply troubling, warning that the groups' access to the coast would significantly boost their capacity for smuggling and arms trafficking.
