Irish man is found dead in Portugal days after vanishing near tourist attraction: Police launch probe
Mark Kiely, from County Donegal, was last seen in the early hours of Saturday close to The Old Town of Albufeira.
The holidaymaker, who was wearing cream shorts and a light green polo shirt, was said to have been in the vicinity of the beach tunnel at around 2am.
But after hours went by with no contact, his concerned family and friends launched a social media appeal asking for anyone with information to help track Mark down.
Tragically, authorities confirmed his body was found on Monday near the Albufeira fishing port.
Earlier social media reports suggested his phone and wallet had been discovered on a bench in the marina.
Pousadas Godinho, the captain of the port of Portimao, told the Portugal Resident that the state police force, Polícia Judiciária (PJ), were now looking into the death.
He said: 'We can confirm the body belonged to an Irish male citizen. PJ police have taken over the investigation.'
Shortly after the news, Mark's family wrote on social media: 'We have found Mark, but unfortunately not the outcome we had been hoping for.
'Huge thanks to all our friends and family for support and help in trying to find him. May Mark rest in peace.'
A tribute posted on Facebook from Donegal Town FC stated: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mark Kiely who has sadly passed away.
'Mark previously played underage at the club and we are all deeply saddened by his loss.'
Those who knew Mark have also reacted, describing the news as 'heartbreaking' and Mark as 'such a gentleman' and 'a lovely fella'.
Another wrote: 'So sad, RIP Mark you were very special to your friends.'

In a tribute issued by police, her husband Wasim Khan said: 'My wife, a mother of two, a daughter, sister and a friend we lost to a tragic event that came on the way home from a family day out in the park. 'She was the most beautiful woman in the world, she did everything for our two children, she did everything she could for anyone and would bring smiles whenever she entered the room. 'She was my comfort, my partner in life and the love of my life. 'We have so many great memories, went through pain together and started a family together. 'Honestly, I feel completely lost without her and I do not know how to put into words how much I miss her face, her character and her presence. My one and only.' A joint investigation between Lancashire Police and the Health and Safety Executive was launched following Mrs Kauser's death. Detective Inspector Iain Czapowski said: 'This is an absolutely tragic incident which has cost a young woman her life and my thoughts are with her loved ones. The woman who plunged to her death with her husband in Sydney 's CBD had endured a childhood marred by heartbreak after losing her own mother in devastating circumstances. Angela Nesbitt and Steven Dash were asked to leave The Star casino in Pyrmont about 8.55am on Saturday before falling from an overpass near Sydney Harbour Bridge less than an hour later, onto Harbour Street, at about 9.45am. Now Daily Mail can reveal Ms Nesbitt's mother, Cathy, died in 1997 in eerily similar circumstances. Cathy took her own life when she fell from a moving car while her husband Chris was behind the wheel. The shocking incident happened close to the family's home in Eagle Vale, in Sydney's south-west, and rocked the close-knit community. 'It was so sad for Angela and her younger brother and sister,' a family friend told Daily Mail. 'None of them ever really recovered from it, not just the horrific accident but the years before that were turbulent for them all.' Around the same time, Ms Nesbitt, then 19, moved to London for a period to live before returning to Australia. 'She was in the UK working for a couple of years - maybe it was a way to try and move on. 'The whole story is very sad, and I guess you never really know how people are dealing with things privately.' Ms Nesbitt's father Chris, who emigrated to Australia from the UK in 1982, delivered the news of his daughter's death to friends and family. On Sunday, he phoned and messaged loved ones to let them know his daughter had tragically died. 'He didn't know the circumstances as to what exactly happened at that point, but was letting people know that it looked like Angela had taken her own life,' the friend said. Security guards at The Star had earlier asked Ms Nesbitt and Mr Dash to leave the casino, raising concerns about their erratic behaviour. Police were alerted after a comment was reportedly made to security about self-harming, sparking fears for the couple's welfare. Officers began searching the Pyrmont and Darling Harbour area, but less than an hour later, police received reports two people had fallen from the overpass onto Harbour Street. Emergency services rushed to the scene but both Ms Nesbitt and Mr Dash were pronounced dead. The couple, who wed in October 2022, had a well-documented history of mental health issues and had previously threatened self-harm. Daily Mail previously revealed how the pair were facing fertility struggles that weighed heavily on them in the months leading up to their deaths. Ms Nesbitt, 48, was a member of several online support groups for surrogacy and egg donation, and was desperate for the chance to have a baby of her own.
