England fast bowling legend James Anderson has praised
Virat Kohli
as one of the greatest Test batters ever while addressing the recent retirements of both Kohli and
Rohit Sharma
from Test cricket. Anderson, 42, believes India has enough talent to fill the void left by these departures ahead of their upcoming five-Test tour of England.
Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, ending his career as India's fourth-highest run-scorer in the format. This decision came shortly after his teammate and captain Rohit Sharma also stepped away from Test cricket.

"Great players. There will be a new captain because Sharma has retired. Kohli, one of the greatest Test batters that's ever been. There's big shoes to fill there but they've got a huge amount of talent in their squad," Anderson said on

The English paceman highlighted India's talent pool, particularly noting the impact of IPL players transitioning to Test cricket.
"You just have to watch the IPL. They are bringing players into Test cricket from the IPL now who are just so attacking, aggressive, and fearless," Anderson stated.
Anderson and Kohli shared a notable rivalry spanning over a decade in Test cricket, particularly during India's tours of England. Their contests saw dramatic shifts, with Anderson dominating Kohli in 2014, followed by Kohli's remarkable comeback in 2018 when he scored nearly 600 runs.

Anderson cautioned against England focusing too much on the upcoming Ashes series while overlooking the challenge posed by India.
"It's a huge year with the Ashes coming but it is important to get some momentum going. If I'm being honest, looking back at my career, that happened too much where, 18 months out from an Ashes the management and even the players starting to look towards that and actually forgetting what's in front of you. India is going to be such a tough challenge even at home. They are a strong side," Anderson said.
The five-Test series between India and England is scheduled to begin in just over a month, marking India's first Test series without both Kohli and Rohit in their lineup.

Siddaramaiah sacks political secy & intelligence chief amid blame game over stampede that killed 11

Govindraj is a long-standing president of the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) and is a member of the Upper House of the state legislature. Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sacked his political secretary and close aide, as many within the government believed it was he who insisted on celebrating Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL championship victory. The state government also transferred Hemanth Nimbalkar, the Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) as heads continued to roll after the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede on Wednesday. Nimbalkar will retain his role as Commissioner, Department of Information and Public Relations. He will be replaced by S. Ravi, who will take over as the new intelligence chief, the government said in a notification. The government has been under increasing pressure to take action against those responsible for the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium which claimed 11 lives and left many injured on 4 June. 'At the Cabinet meeting yesterday (5 June), ministers complained (to the CM) that Govindraj was the one who insisted on holding the celebrations and then telling the media that he asked the government not to hold it,' the person cited above said. The BJP and Janata Dal (JD(S) held a joint press conference in Bengaluru Friday where they said that the CM's office was directly responsible for the Chinnaswamy stadium tragedy. H.D. Kumaraswamy, the former CM and Union Minister for Large and Medium Industries, said that the state government was going after efficient police officers instead of holding themselves accountable. 'Both CM and Deputy CM are responsible for the tragedy due to their obsession with power and publicity. Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar from Kanakapura was busy showing off. He was at court for a case in Kanakapura when he learned the Royal Challengers team was arriving in Bengaluru. To welcome them, the CM and his team had planned a grand reception at the steps of Vidhana Soudha. Learning this, D.K. Eleven people, including a 14-year-old girl, died and 47 were injured in the stampede Wednesday afternoon which occurred when lakhs of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of players from the Royal Challengers Bangalore after they won the Indian Premier League. But the celebrations, which were meant to be for special invitees only, turned tragic when a huge crowd gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium and tried to climb trees and barricades to enter the stadium, triggering a stampede. On Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision to immediately suspend Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, Assistant Commissioner of Police C. 2nd Unofficial Test, Day 1: Solid KL Rahul Warms Up For England Series With Fine Ton But India A Lose Plot
KL Rahul gained the requisite confidence and much-needed game time ahead of the upcoming five-Test series with a classy hundred for India A against a quality England Lions attack that featured seasoned pacer Chris Woakes. Rahul's flawless 116 off 168 balls - his 19th first-class hundred - was complemented by Dhruv Jurel 's 52 off 87 balls, his third successive half-century, as India A reached 319 for 7 in 83 overs on a rain-hit opening day. At stumps, Tanush Kotian (5) and Anshul Kamboj (1) were at the crease. The Lions' bowling attack, with comeback man Chris Woakes (3/50 in 17 overs) hitting the straps straightaway in a fine opening spell in conditions aiding seam and swing, posed its own set of challenges, but Rahul had an answer to every probing question thrown at him by the English speedster. The other English seamer Josh Tongue, who primarily bowls inswing with an open chested action, was handled with aplomb by the Bengaluru man, who hit 15 fours and a straight six down the ground off spinner Farhan Ahmed 's bowling. Rahul opening the innings was a clear indication that he, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, is likely to face the new ball in the opening Test at Leeds from June 20. The manner in which Rahul handled Woakes' first spell was an education. He was right behind the ball and when he played square off the wicket, he executed his strokes as late as possible. His cover drive was regal and square cut was equally delicious. The kneeling cover drive was a picture-perfect stroke, and during the post-tea session, it appeared as if Rahul was having an extended net session - such was the ease with which he batted. There was cloud cover during the first session and Woakes took full advantage of the condition by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who didn't seem happy with the lbw decision as he felt that the delivery was missing leg-stump. Abhimanyu Easwaran (11) could have been dismissed off the very first ball as he loosely dangled his bat at an outswinger from Woakes, only to be dropped at second slip. However, Woakes eventually got him in his first spell with a delivery that straightened after pitching and trapped him plumb in front. Easwaran, who has once again been handed the India A captaincy, has now failed to deliver in all first innings of India A's first-class matches in Australia and England. He couldn't cross 20 in the four innings during the 'A' Tests in Australia, and in England, on pitches with some assistance for bowlers in Canterbury and now Northampton, he looked short on both technique and temperament to counter quality bowling. Karun Nair (40) again looked good in the post lunch session when the sun was out and had a 86-run third wicket stand with Rahul before the former became Woakes' third victim. Jurel, whose batting is very easy to the eye, added 121 runs for the fourth wicket with Rahul and had seven fours in his knock. With scores of 94, 53 not out and 52, Jurel is not only a worthy understudy to Pant but also presents the team management with an option of a specialist No. 6 batter if need be. Seamer George Hill (2/56 in 18 overs), who operates from wide of the crease, dismissed Jurel with one that came in with the angle, before getting a delivery to straighten and bounce, which Rahul edged to second slip.
