Tuberous Sclerosis garden wins gold at flower show

Yahoo22-05-2025

A garden that was designed to raise awareness for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association has won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Jen Donnelly and Catherine Gibbon volunteer at Amersham Hospital in Buckinghamshire and rejuvenate the gardens used by staff and patients.
Their "Room to Breathe" garden was inspired by Ms Donnelly's experiences waiting in hospitals for her 15-year-old son Alex, who has Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, to have surgery.
After the flower show, the garden will be moved to Amersham Hospital, which will become its permanent home.
Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic condition that causes mainly benign tumours to develop in different parts of the body, such as the brain, heart, and lungs.
Ms Donnelly recalled: "My memory is sitting on a plastic chair in a clinical corridor waiting for news of his operations.
"I thought, wouldn't it have been amazing to have a little space outside space. I could've gone to [it] to escape, have a moment to yourself.
"So we've created this little corner of a hospital courtyard where a parent could go to and have that moment to themselves."
The design won its trophy in the Balcony and Container Garden category.
It was created with planting containers off the ground, at various heights, in a 12 square-meter space.
A "cocoon-like hanging chair" was included, which Ms Gibbon said evoked the feeling of having "a nice hug you really need when you're in hospital".
During the show, the garden was visited by celebrities such as actor Sir David Suchet, Strictly Come Dancing star Nadiya Bychkova and singer Alexandra Burke.
Ms Donnelly said: "David Suchet was so lovely and spent so much time with us, talking to the public about why it was important to raise awareness about the condition.
The Poirot actor has regularly supported the charity in public.

David Beckham to be awarded knighthood, reports suggests

David Beckham is to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, according to reports. The former England captain will appear on the list due to be released next week, the Sun reported, having previously been awarded an OBE in 2003. Beckham, who played for his country 115 times and has carried out extensive charity work, has been in the running for a knighthood for more than a decade. The Unicef goodwill ambassador, who turned 50 in May, would take on the title of Sir and his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, would become Lady Beckham. He had been on the verge of receiving a knighthood in the 2014 New Year's Honours list but HM Revenue and Customs placed a red flag on his nomination due to his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, according to previous reports. Speculation that Beckham was in line for a knighthood grew after he announced his retirement from football in 2013. Footage published by the Sun shows the King asking Beckham if he 'received his 50th birthday present', during a conversation at the Chelsea Flower Show last month. The King appeared to say 'I'm glad it got to you', with Beckham responding: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind'. The Queen was then heard telling Beckham: 'I'm glad you got the roses.' Beckham is the only Englishman to score at three different World Cups and his career included the treble-winning campaign of 1998-99, when Manchester United won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. He earned the third highest number of England caps of all time for the men's team, and was captain on 59 occasions. After playing for United, Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Madrid, Beckham turned to making his co-owned US team Inter Miami into a success. The former winger married Victoria, also known as Posh Spice, in 1999. Together the power couple starred in the Netflix documentary Beckham – which included a viral scene of her discussing class. The four-part documentary series about Beckham's life and professional career scored him an Emmy in 2024 for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series. Beckham was given his OBE for services to football on the recommendation of then-prime minister Tony Blair. His wife Victoria got the same honour for services to the fashion industry in a later New Year Honours list.

How social media is transforming wedding days

A wedding content creator said described how more couples are embracing seeing their big day through the candid lens of a mobile phone. Geared with just an iPhone, Beth Denman, 25, and her team take thousands of photos and videos during weddings, which are edited into short form content for social media. She started Social Scenes from her home in Attleborough, Norfolk, two years ago and has now grown it into a team of five. "It's very candid and in the moment... it's the moments that are often missed by the bride and groom," Ms Denman said. She first discovered wedding content creation in 2023, on social media posts from Australia. Ms Denman estimated that, at the time, there were just three other wedding creators in Norfolk. "I thought that I could totally do this. I noticed that no-one was really doing it in Norfolk," she said. She estimates there are now about 20 people providing a similar service across the county. The wedding planning website, Hitched, has reported a 586% rise in searches for wedding content creators in 2025. Ms Denman said she plays the role of the "uninvited but invited guest". "We blend in with the shadows and we gravitate around the wedding to capture different parts," she added. Wedding creators such as Ms Denman work alongside traditional photographers and videographers to capture the big day. Although they may seem similar, Ms Denman said wedding creators worked candidly, sometimes providing content for couples within 24 hours. "I think if people see it as the death of the photographer or videographer, they're getting the complete wrong conception," she added. "Content creators aren't a replacement for anybody... we are an addition." Wedding photographer Ellie Gillard agrees that the services they provide differ. Ms Gillard has been a wedding photographer in Norfolk and London for 14 years, and has photographed more than 400 weddings. "Content creators serve a different purpose in the grand scheme of things," she said. "It's great for people who are very present on social media - the content that they give you are almost instant. "But people have had photographers at their wedding since photography began, and it fits that tradition." She has previously worked with content creators and believes their job is not as simple as some may think. "The growth of content creators means that some people think it's fun, that they can turn up and just point their phones at things," she said. "But there is more to it than that... it's really important that you blend into the day seamlessly." Follow Norfolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. There will be comprehensive coverage of the tournament across the BBC - here are all the key details. When is the French Open 2025? The clay-court Grand Slam started on Sunday, 25 May and finishes on Sunday, 8 June. Alcaraz won his first French Open title last year, coming back from two sets to one down to see off Alexander Zverev in the men's singles. Advertisement Spain's Alcaraz is a four-time major champion, having gone on to defend his Wimbledon title just five weeks later. Iga Swiatek arrived at Roland Garros as the three-time defending champion in the women's singles, beating Jasmine Paolini in last year's final. Swiatek has won four of the past five women's singles titles at Roland Garros - however, her semi-final exit means there will be a new name on the trophy in 2025. What is the prize money? The total prize money for the French Open is 56.352m euros (£47.5m) - an increase on last year of 5.21%. The men's and women's singles champions will win 2.55m euros, with the runner-up taking home 1.275m euros. Who is still in contention? World number one Sinner and second-ranked Alcaraz, the favourites on the men's side, are both through to the semi-finals. Advertisement The pair, who cannot meet until the final because of their seedings, recently contested the Italian Open final, with Alcaraz triumphing. Djokovic, a three-time champion in Paris, is bidding for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title. The 38-year-old Serb has struggled for form this year but is into the last four, where he will meet Sinner. Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, will be the next opponent for defending champion Alcaraz. In the women's draw, Sabalenka ended Swiatek's 26-match winning run at the French Open with a three-set victory in their much-anticipated semi-final. Advertisement Gauff easily got past the tournament's surprise package - French wildcard Lois Boisson - in her semi-final, dropping just three games in a convincing victory. Boisson, who began the event as the world number 361, had knocked out top-10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva on her way to the last four. Sabalenka and Gauff have won Grand Slam titles previously, but neither player has lifted the singles' trophy at Roland Garros before. How did British players fare in main draw? Seven Britons qualified for the French Open, with Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie going furthest before exits in the last 16. Advertisement British number one and fifth seed Draper was beaten by Alexander Bublik in four sets, while Norrie lost to 24-time major champion Djokovic. Norrie had beaten fast-rising Jacob Fearnley in an all-British contest in the third round. It was the first time since 1963 that two British men had reached the fourth round at the clay-court Grand Slam. Katie Boulter, the highest-ranked British woman in the singles draw, and Sonay Kartal both lost in the second round. Emma Raducanu's run in Paris was also ended in round two with a straight-set defeat by Poland's Swiatek. Jodie Burrage was the only British player to lose in the first round, beaten by former world number seven Danielle Collins in straight sets. When was the French Open draw?
