
Samsung phones can survive twice as many charges as Pixel and iPhone, according to EU data

With Google just announcing the start of its Battery Performance Program for the Pixel 6a, set to get underway next week, battery health is very much on our mind. It's a little odd thinking about your smartphone as a consumable, but to an extent that's what it really does come down to, and every time we put one of our devices through a full charge cycle, we end up with batteries that are just a little bit worse for the wear. Repeat that process hundreds upon hundreds of times, and you'll really start to notice those losses.
One thing this whole fiasco with the Pixel 4a and now Pixel 6a has really driven home for us is that not all batteries are created equal. The problem is, we tend to only learn about devices with batteries that cause problems years down the line. Isn't there any good way to set your battery expectations when you're initially purchasing your phone? Sure enough, we just got one.
Like many other recent consumer-benefiting smartphone rules, we've got the European Union to thank here, and specifically, its new energy label program. Just like you might see an Energy Star rating on a new appliance, these labels help communicate power efficiency, hardware durability, and most critically for today's discussion, a rating for the number of charge cycles the phone should be able to endure.

We've verified all these figures through the EU's European Product Registry for Energy Labelling. Thanks to Reddit user FragmentedChicken for putting together an early version of this list; we've gone through the whole database and added even more devices you may find relevant.
Curious what the battery situation looks like on the other side of the platform fence? We pulled up the ratings for Apple hardware, too, and everything it has in the EU's system, from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPad Air M3, claims a rating of 1,000 charge cycles.
Right now, the vast majority of devices fall in the 1,000–1,400 cycle range. So how did Samsung manage to push so many of its phones and tablets up to 2,000 cycles? That is a very, very good question, and we would love to see a more technical analysis into how these numbers are put together, and just how accurately they may reflect real-world conditions. And what impact does different battery chemistry, like the silicon-carbon battery in the OnePlus 13, have on the cycle count?
This database offers a great jumping-off point, but we would sure love to see a whole lot more battery information provided by the manufacturers behind these devices.

Last-minute Pixel 10 leak suggests controversial change is really happening
Google TL;DR A new leak appears to show Pixel 10 packaging with a message about eSIM setup. The image would support earlier claims that most Pixel 10 models may drop physical SIM trays. Blass previously claimed the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL would all ship without SIM trays. Today, he shared a picture of the type of label you might find on a smartphone box. It reads: 'You no longer need a physical SIM card. Activate your eSIM during phone setup.' As he posted it while quoting his earlier leak on the subject, the clear implication is that this label is taken directly from Pixel 10 packaging. According to his earlier tip, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the only model in the lineup expected to keep a physical SIM slot. Some shots of a dummy Pixel 10 device had given hope to those who still rely on physical SIM cards. However, the new label strengthens the original claim, though the wording leaves a little wiggle room. If you 'no longer' need a physical SIM card, this only confirms eSIM support. It doesn't strictly say there is no SIM card slot, although we're probably splitting hairs. If Google does move to eSIM-only phones, it would follow Apple's lead, which made the same switch with the iPhone 14. The change simplifies setup and carrier switching, but can frustrate certain groups such as travelers who still find it easier to grab a physical SIM card abroad. We'll know for certain tomorrow at the Made by Google event, where the Pixel 10 series is expected to headline alongside the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a. Follow

Google announced the next step in its nuclear energy plans
Google is one step closer to reaching its nuclear ambitions now that it's working with public power utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to purchase electricity from a next-generation reactor. It's the first power purchase agreement for technology this advanced that a US utility has made, according to the companies. The plan is for TVA to buy electricity from a reactor being developed by engineering company Kairos Power in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Once the reactor is up and running, expected in 2030, it should start supplying electricity to the local grid that serves Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. If they manage to pull this all off, it could help jumpstart a whole new era for nuclear energy If they manage to pull this all off, it could help jumpstart a whole new era for nuclear energy in the US. The nation's current fleet of nuclear reactors uses decades-old technology that has struggled to compete with cheap electricity from gas-fired power plants and solar and wind farms. Kairos Power is building one of the first reactors that proponents hope can usher in a resurgence of nuclear energy, and meet rising electricity demand from Big Tech and AI. The announcement follows news that Google would purchase electricity from 'multiple' small modular reactors designed by Kairos Power. The Hermes 2 demonstration plant is the first reactor being developed under that agreement. It expands on the first Hermes demonstration reactor that Kairos broke ground on in July of last year after receiving the first construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a non-water-cooled reactor in more than half a century. Unlike conventional reactors that use water, Kairos' technology uses molten fluoride salt as a coolant. Since the reactor's molten salt coolant has a much higher boiling point than water and doesn't reach a boil, the reactor can operate at relatively low pressure. A low-pressure reactor like Kairos' technology is supposed to cut costs for nuclear energy by getting rid of the need to build big high-pressure containment structures. Oak Ridge, Tennessee — where Kairos is building Hermes 2 — was once the headquarters for the Manhattan Project. Now, instead of housing facilities enriching uranium for the first atomic bombs, Oak Ridge has become a hub for nuclear energy projects and research. Eventually, Google aims to help Kairos deploy 500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity in the US by 2035. For context, America's 94 operating nuclear reactors had a combined capacity of 97,000MW in 2024 and accounted for just under 20 percent of the US electricity mix. Hermes 2 is supposed to reach a capacity of 50MW. Companies that generate carbon pollution-free electricity, like nuclear energy and renewables, can make money by selling the electricity they provide to the power grid and by selling so-called clean energy attributes that are like separate certificates representing the environmental benefits of avoiding fossil fuel emissions. Google will receive clean energy attributes from the Hermes 2 plant through TVA. Tech companies with climate goals often buy clean energy attributes to try to cancel out the pollution caused by their electricity use. By matching its electricity use with those certificates, a company might claim that it runs on clean energy even if it's plugged into a power grid that still runs on dirty energy. Extra income from clean energy attributes is supposed to help developers add more carbon pollution-free power to the grid (although research has shown that the environmental benefits are often overestimated).
