Mum's last words and son's screams recorded by husband who stabbed her to death

Daily Mirror10-05-2025

Veteran newsreader Dermot Murnaghan is back on our screens presenting true crime series Killer Britain, which explores how ordinary events can lead to 'extraordinary murders'
The harrowing tale of a 31-year-old mother who was knifed to death by her estranged husband in a fit of jealousy is just one account of "extraordinary awfulness" being told by Dermot Murnaghan.
The 67-year-old former newsreader left Sky News in February 2023 and is now fronting a new true-crime documentary series, Killer Britain, which starts on Monday. Dermot says he was struck by 'how ordinary a lot of these events are, until they lead to the extraordinary awfulness of the murder."

Andrew Parsons, 38, attacked Janee Parsons, 31, in their Bicester home in front of their young son on December 1, 2012. He was caught after the murder was recorded on a dictation machine he had hidden under a bed to spy on his wife, which captured their young son's screams and Janee mumbling words of prayer before she died.

She was heard saying: "Oh my God, no, no, dear God forgive me for my sins." Dermot told the Mirror: "Everyone knows people who are in deteriorating or inappropriate relationships. A lot of the stories in this series are about really nice human beings who trusted someone else utterly, and they were turned upon and paid for it with their lives. Like Michaela, everyone could see was in an abusive relationship and was being sucked in but couldn't talk her out of it.
'The case of Janee Parsons particularly stuck in my mind. Again, it is a common scenario, the breakdown of a relationship, a jealous partner obsessed with the other who is trying to build a new life.
'Her murder was recorded by the boyfriend's own dictation machine, which was what ultimately caught him, that was the chilling, extraordinary thing about the case.'
Many of the murders were stories Dermot remembers covering during his 30-year career presenting news on ITV, BBC and Sky. 'That's why in this series I talk more about my own involvement," he said. "But it's not about me, it's first and foremost about the victim, and about their family and friends, so that people can hear their stories.'
The show, now in its fifth run, delves into some of Britain's most chilling murder cases, with first-hand accounts from detectives as well as the heartrending testimony of victims' families. Another case covered in the ten-part series on the Crime + Investigation channel includes the 2021 murder of Michaela Hall, 49, a former airline flight attendant who was stabbed through the eye by her violent boyfriend Lee Kendall, after he had constantly abused her for two years.

While most of us are no longer hearing Dermot's familiar voice when the evening TV news comes on, his family certainly are, according to the veteran newsreader. He says he now throws his shoes and screams at the TV screen whenever he sees a politician managing to get off lightly in an interview. And don't even get him started on the adverts.
He says it's 'incredibly frustrating' to just be a normal TV viewer and not in the interviewer's seat. "I'm throwing soft shoes at the television screen and knocking the radio over when I hear it, because that's my obsession, I can't give it up.
'If I hear another politician say 'nothing's off the table' or 'we're doing this for the national interest', I'm just screaming, 'Of course you are, but what are you doing?! What the heckity-heck does that mean?''

Not that he thinks he was any better at on-air grilling. He adds: 'There are some brilliant people operating, way, way better than me. But I think the politicians have got way more adept at side-stepping questions.'
But he doesn't hold back on seeing his former colleagues flogging gold sovereigns during the ad breaks. Dermot says he's not 'naming names', but he's clearly referring to former fellow newsreaders Michael Burke and Nicholas Owen, who have both appeared in commercials selling gold coins for Hattons of London.

'When you're a live newsreader you're banned by Ofcom from advertising anything, because you have a degree of credibility. But once you stop, you can, and some of my former colleagues do. Some of the things they advertise, well, I'm going to leave it there, I wouldn't.'
But he doesn't leave it there: 'I may be cutting off a lucrative revenue stream for myself, but gold sovereigns at four times the price that they actually do cost, yeah, I wouldn't do that.
'Let me say to anyone who sees this, you can get gold sovereigns, if you want them - I don't have any, but just look up the price - cheaper than those being pumped towards you by some former news people.'

Dermot was destined to become a historian after completing a history degree and masters, but turned to journalism, working on local newspapers in the 80s before joining Channel 4 as a researcher, where he also got his first opportunities in front of the camera.
Presenting the biggest news programmes on all three terrestrial channels, he became one of the most trusted faces on TV and covered the biggest stories, including breaking the news of the death of Princess Diana and the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

He finally signed off Sky News after 16 years with a quote from newsreader movie Anchorman, throwing his news notes from his desk with the words: 'You stay classy, planet Earth. Goodbye.'
But despite his frustration with now having to watch the news from his sofa, Dermot insists he doesn't miss breaking it. 'Not at all, really, really not,' he says. 'I've done my innings, I hope I was decent at it, at least semi- coherent, but you can't be there forever.
'It was just hectic. I mean, I don't think I ever went on a holiday when I didn't expect to be called back from it. Now I get to chill, grow a beard, do things I've always wanted to. I did a big tour of Vietnam and Singapore, absolutely untrammelled by the idea that something might happen to cut it short.'

His wife of 36 years, Maria Keegan, on the other hand, has taken more convincing, he says. 'It's the first time I haven't been employed by a big organisation. Suddenly I was at home a lot more and there was a sense of, 'Oh OK, we'll have to get used to this then, this is different'. I think the same as before would have suited her I expect.
'But we've got our own friends, we do our own things, I got out on my bike, I go away on breaks with my mates.'
Making their north London home even more crowded are two of Dermot's four adult children - three daughters and two sons, aged between 23 and 33 - who have recently moved back in. He says: 'Like a lot of families, they're following different paths but accommodation is very expensive and as for buying anything… young people these days have no chance.

'One's an environmentalist, another is in something I don't understand, metaverse marketing or something, one's a football coach and another's in PR.'
There are no grandfather duties expected soon, but Dermot says: 'I've no comment to make on that. They're fully grown adults and their plans for the future are obviously up to them. But you know, if I could drop a gentle hint to them, it would be 'Get a crack on lad, whenever you want'.'

In the meantime, though, the veteran newsman has got several big projects of his own. He's finally getting round to writing his memoirs, and also hints that he's following in the footsteps of other former TV journalists and will soon be launching a podcast.
He says: 'The memoir is one of the things I'm tinkering at. Every now and again I pull some of my notes out and think, 'oh my goodness, I interviewed that person'. Another extraordinary moment that came to mind the other day was on the 50th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, I was lucky enough to interview the woman who was the closest to ground zero.
'So many people were vaporised and she wasn't far away, but survived and had horrible cancers. I remember sitting in a park with tears pouring down my cheeks as she expressed forgiveness, after all that had happened to her. She made me an origami crane, which I found the other day upstairs in the attic with the rest of the dusty memories.'

Yet another is his infamous interview with then Labour minister Peter Mandelson, who resigned from the cabinet in 1999 after Dermot questioned him over the way he had filled out a mortgage application, and exchange which won him the Royal Television Society Interviewer of the Year award.
But as he watches the news unfold on his living room TV, isn't he secretly itching to grill the new famous faces of today's international events?
Dermot admits he'd like to use his well-known no-nonsense interviewing skils on Donald Trump. 'I think because you really have got someone who doesn't know what is true and what isn't, what is real and what's not,' he says. 'Yes I'd like to interview him, but I'd also like to nail jelly to a wall. And if I did I'm sure I'd then get barred from the United States forevermore, and get a huge on air telling off.'
The new series of Killer Britain, presented by Dermot Murnaghan starts Monday 12th May on the Crime + Investigation channel

Richard Madeley presents Good Morning Britain in cast after ‘double fracture'

The 69-year-old was asked how he got the injury by co-host Susanna Reid, who remarked 'that looks sore', at the start of Monday's edition of the ITV morning show. He replied: 'It's a double fracture of the wrist. I was walking quite quickly down a steep pavement in France, actually, on Friday, and the pavement was loose, and it flipped up and it flipped me forward. and I thought, am I going to win or is gravity going to win? And gravity won. 'I hit the ground hard, so yeah, I've got a double fracture and we'll see how it goes.' Reid then asked whether it was still sore to which her co-host replied: 'I'm not discussing the pain threshold.' In Monday's show, Madeley's cast could be seen as the two went on to discuss Greta Thunberg's aid boat which had been travelling to Gaza and has been boarded by Israeli forces, the NHS's recent calls for a million new blood donors to come forward, and protests in Los Angeles. As he interviewed comedian turned artist Jim Moir, best known by his stage name Vic Reeves, who showed him how he can make his bed in eight seconds, Madeley praised him with 'one hand clapping'. Madeley has co-presented the show since 2017, after previously launching ITV's This Morning in 1988 with wife Judy Finnigan, with whom he went on to present chat show Richard And Judy from 2001 to 2009. The presenter also worked on The Wright Stuff as a guest host between 2012 and 2017. Madeley's co-host Reid joined Good Morning Britain in 2014, having previously worked on BBC Breakfast and Sunday Morning Live.

Prior to the new rules, it was romps galore, with one couple even shown having sex on top of the covers while the other Islanders were tuning in. But after high demand by the public, Love Island recently confirmed it WILL show Hideaway sizzling sex scenes for first time in years. Here we take a look at the steamiest scenes of the cult favourite series so far - and perhaps what the singletons could shock us with in 2025. Yee-haw with an audience 16 Terry and Emma certainly gave other islanders a show to remember Credit: ITV It was 2016 and ITV hadn't yet banned all things 18+ from our TV screens - and contestants Terry Walsh, 34, decided to get steamy with Emma Jane Woodham, 28. And it's not just staying faithful to his former love interest Malin Anderson who got kicked out of the villa just 36 hours before that Terry forgot about - as cameras, too, seemed to have slipped his mind. As the lights were turned off for the day, Emma - who vowed to not have sex during the show - was caught climbing on top with the covers off. Describing the moment, fellow islander Sophie Gradon said: "I could not believe what I was seeing. Emma sat there with the duvet off, riding him like a bucking bronco." Olivia Buckland added: "I feel like they blocked us out, like they had blinkers on like horses do and they just carried on." 'It's f****g huge!' 16 Molly-Mae was heard shouting 'it's f*****g huge' after reaching ujnderneath the covers Credit: ITV Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague became the first couple in the Spanish villa to go for it in the 2019 series. Top 10 funniest Love Island moments The famous boxer, 26, performed a sex act on Molly-Mae when she was heard gasping "Jesus Christ" as the pair spooned in bed. Then on a separate occasion, Molly-Mae, 26, reached underneath the covers and was heard whispering: "It's f***ing huge." Dad-of-one Tommy was seen with a smug smile plastered all over his face while Molly-Mae's cuddly toy was discarded on the bed, as fans joked they were horrified they'd had sex in front of Ellie-Belly. A show for the roommates 16 Malin and Terry gave the fellow islanders a steamy show Before saying goodbye to the fellow Islanders, Malin Andersson, 31, and Terry Walsh, 36, decided to get frisky despite the fact the rest of the couples were also in the legendary bedroom with them. They continued to go at it with the still lights on under the covers as the other Islanders cheered and watched the steamy session. Performing a sex act 16 Adam Collard and Rosie Williams became the first couple in the 2018 series to go further than a kiss Despite insisting she would remain celibate for the sake of her legal career, Rosie Williams, 33, performed a sex act on personal trainer and Love Island lothario Adam Collard. The brunette got hot and bothered under the covers with Geordie fitness fan, 29, becoming the first couple in the 2018 series to go further than a kiss. The next morning Adam was caught by cameras he had a 'really, really good sleep' and that he had woken up with a 'spring' in his step after the fondle. But the antics did not go unnoticed by their fellow housemates on the ITV2 dating show. Scottish air stewardess Laura Anderson, 36 caught a glimpse of the action with her then-partner Wes Nelson. She told him: 'I can hear their bed creaking. The covers seem very raised. Don't look.' The next day when Rosie revealed the intimate clinch to her female pals, Laura admitted hearing it had turned her on. She said: 'I heard a creak on the bed. It was egging me on. I nearly went there myself.' Romping in ex's jumper 16 Megan Barton-Hanson gave viewers plenty of racy moments - including having sex with Wes Nelson while wearing ex's jumper Credit: ITV Series four Megan Barton-Hanson was one of the most talked-about Islanders, giving viewers plenty of drama, sass - and racy moments. Together with her then love interest model Eyal Booker, 29, the OnlyFans content creator, 31, was the first to get intimate under the sheets in The Hideaway. Sadly, their romance didn't last long and Megan quickly moved onto hunk Wes Nelson, 27. The horny pair had nookie twice - with Megan wearing Eyal's jumper - but voiceover star Iain Sterling, 37, couldn't help but chuckle about how quick the steamy deed was over. 'Sweaty' scenes 16 Viewers were in for a surprise as events turned kinky whilst the duo were finally alone together Credit: Eroteme 16 Viewers were treated to steamy scenes on ITV2 as Will donned BDSM style chains and crawled to his lover Credit: Eroteme Will Young , 26, and Aussie, Jessie Wynter, 28, spent the night in the hideaway as events got steamy on the show. During this episode, the islanders got a text as the group were invited select a couple to spend the night together in private. The ITV2 villa quickly opted to select Will and Jessie to spend some alone time together. Viewers were in for a surprise as events turned kinky whilst the duo were finally alone together. Will donned BDSM style chains as he crawled on the floor towards his lover whilst Jessie was scantily-clad. Doing 'bits' 16 Siannise treated the footballer to a lap dance before they jumped under the covers Credit: ITV Love Island fans were convinced that Siannise Fudge, 29, and Luke Trotman, 27, 'did bits' in bed after she stripped naked on the show in 2020. During the episode, the pair got to spend the night in The Hideaway and Siannise treated Luke to a lap dance before they jumped under the covers. Afterwards the girls and boys got very different stories about what went down when the lights went out. The semi-pro footballer told the lads: "She took off all her gear, it was under the covers but still." Siannise however didn't mention that – simply telling the girls that she did a dance for him. Those watching at home think something might have happened between them and took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to discuss it. One wrote: 'Luke T definitely done bits with Siannise last night #LoveIsland." A second tweeted: 'Luke T and Siannese are defo doing bits #LoveIsland.' Waking up with 'the hair' 16 There was no fooling the viewers who were convinced Paige's 'hair' was a result of a passionate night in the Hideaway Credit: ITV Paige Turley and Finlay Tapp - who were eventually crowned the winners of Love Island 2020 - sent the viewers wild following their night of passion in the Hideaway. They were supplied with lingerie and white chocolate body paint, as well as a bed covered in rose petals. While fans got a glimpse of their heart-felt confessions to each other, the cameras cut after the pair shared a cheeky snog. Both of them remained coy about what went down underneath those covers, but eagle-eyed fans suggested they had sex - and it was all down to the bed hair. One person wrote: "Paige and Finn definitely had sex in the hideaway, she had the hair" Breaking the bed 16 Viewers were convinced Chloe and footballer Toby were doing 'bits' in bed Credit: ITV Footballer Toby Aromolaran, 26, who appeared on the seventh series of the show when he was just 22, jumped from girl to girl before settling with Chloe Burrows, 29. But rather than embarking on some subtle under-the-duvet action like the other couples, the frisky pair were more than happy to get up to no good in full view of the cameras. One shocked viewer wrote: "No one, I repeat no one needed to see Chloe and Toby doing what looked like 'bits' in bed." Another penned: "Why are they making us watch Toby doing that to Chloe in bed???"" 16 Following their night of steamy passion, the duo realised they had broken the bed Credit: Eroteme Over a week later, their relationship continued to heat up, with the pair breaking the bed following a night of steamy passion. After what appeared to be some fumbling under the sheets, a loud thud stopped them in their tracks. They quickly realised they'd broken the bed, with former marketing executive Chloe, then 25, laughing: "The bed has completely broke!" "S****ing like rabbits'' Chloe spilled behind-the-scenes secrets and admitted contestants on her series were "s****ing like rabbits''. Revealing all on her show 'Chloe Vs The World,' she told Tom Clare and Samie Elishi from last year's series that islanders got down and dirty "in the pantry" when the cameras had stopped rolling. After Sami was left red-faced when asked whether she and Tom had slept together on the show, Chloe reassured her: "Don't worry babe, on my series we were s****ing like rabbits. "It was disgraceful. What the producers said to us was, 'It's not Pornhub'... People were doing it in the pantry and in the shower." Orgy on a family holiday 16 Anton recalled some of his naughty antics while he was a naked butler Credit: ANTON DANYLUK Viewers and islanders alike praised Scottish favourite Anton Danyluk, 30, for maturing since he last appeared in series 5 of the reality show in 2019. Back then, he seemed to be a completely different person - and wasn't shy about opening up about some of his raunchiest moments in the bedroom. Speaking to The Sun, the gym owner previously boasted about having an orgy while on a family holiday in Lanzarote - with one girl and three other lads. 'I had an orgy once. It was four guys and one girl – it was her idea," he said. 'I was on holiday with my mum and dad. I went out with one of my mates in Lanzarote and my mate and I went down the strip and it was literally just us two because it was around Christmas time. 'One night, we met two other boys. Obviously, I had been away for a week-and-a-half and I didn't have any sex in that time so I was ready to go.' Anton went on to say how he and his friend met a Danish woman who was up for some fun. "I slept with her and then the other boys came along and that was it," he confessed. "It's not as impressive as it sounds." Anton, who could often be found showing off his ripped body in the shower in the All Stars version, started working as a naked butler when he was just 18. "I'm not going to lie, the first five butler gigs I did I slept with six girls," he recalled. "These two girls did all the games together and I just asked them and we were in a hotel so we had a threesome." Sleeping with 100 women 16 Farmer Will was dubbed a 'f*** boy' after claiming he had slept with 100 women Credit: ITV Love Island fans were anything but impressed when farmer Will Young dropped a bombshell about his steamy history, claiming he had slept with a whopping 100 women. During a Mr and Mrs game in the villa, Will casually asked Aussie stunner Jessie Wynter about her past encounters. Jessie, unsure of the exact number, replied: "I don't really count, but I guess around 20. 21 now." Surprisingly, Will then revealed his own count, leaving Jessie - and viewers - visibly taken aback. He nonchalantly responded: "No, about 100." Jessie let out a sigh and exclaimed: "That's why I think you're a f*** boy. That's f*** boy behavior." 'At it every day' 16 The boxer confessed that he's been getting his daily dose of self-love - which is forbidden on the show Credit: ITV Tommy Fury dropped a major bombshell in the villa, confessing that he's been getting his daily dose of self-love - which is strictly forbidden on the show. During a chat in the beach hut with Molly-Mae, the then 20-year-old lad casually mentioned: "Well, I've been using the same technique for 20 years, so... I mean, I've been at it every day, you know? ''If I can't make it happen today, we've got a serious problem, don't we?" In total disbelief, Molly-Mae exclaimed: "Every day?!" Tommy nonchalantly responded: "Yeah, most days."
