India secure 8-0 win over Sri Lanka in SAFF U19 title defence opener

India Gazette10-05-2025

Yupia (Arunachal Pradesh) [India], May 10 (ANI): India kicked off their South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U19 Championship title defence in spectacular fashion with a commanding 8-0 victory against Sri Lanka in their Group B opener at the Golden Jubilee Stadium.
On Friday, the dominant display was capped by a superb hat-trick from Danny Meitei Laishram (26', 31', 50') -- the tournament's first -- while Prashan Jajo (17', 62') bagged a brace in a comprehensive all-round performance. Md Arbash (40'), Omang Dodum (48'), and captain Singamayum Shami (81') scored one each, as per a press release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The hosts, cheered on by a raucous home crowd in the first-ever international football tournament in Arunachal Pradesh, showed their intent from the very first whistle. With slick passing, intelligent movement, and constant pressure, India dominated every inch of the pitch and left Sri Lanka chasing shadows.
India's midfield, led by a disciplined and composed unit, dictated the tempo with sharp distribution, while their forwards tore through Sri Lanka's disorganised backline. On the wings, Arbash and Rohen Singh were especially threatening, generating wave after wave of attacks.
The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Prashan Jajo burst down the left flank, beating his marker with pace and precision before smashing home from a tight angle to give India a deserved lead. Just nine minutes later, a misjudged backpass from Sri Lanka allowed Omang Dodum to pounce and deliver a pinpoint cross for Danny, who made no mistake with a well-timed header.
India made it 3-0 in the 31st minute when Danny struck again -- this time with a powerful left-footed effort from 21 yards out that flew past stranded Sri Lanka goalkeeper Nadal Aaron Senapala. The fourth arrived before half-time, when Danny floated a cross into the box, which Jajo headed cleverly into the path of Arbash, who tapped home with ease.
The second half resumed with the same energy as the first. Local favourite Omang Dodum got on the scoresheet in the 48th minute, showing brilliant footwork to beat his marker before slotting between the legs of Senapala. A couple of minutes later, Danny completed his hat-trick after capitalising on a defensive error from Omith Edirisinghe, calmly finishing from close range to make it 6-0.
In the 62nd minute, Jajo doubled his tally after Senapala failed to collect a routine header from India captain Singamayum Shami, spilling the ball into the path of the forward who slotted home. The eighth and final goal was a moment of individual brilliance from Shami himself, who danced past two defenders before finishing clinically from a tight angle in the 81st minute.
India's commanding victory was a statement of intent -- solid at the back, fluid in midfield, and lethal in attack. With the crowd on their feet and spirits soaring in the rain-kissed hills of Yupia, the Blue Colts made it clear that they remain firm favourites to retain their SAFF U19 crown.
India U19: Aheibam Suraj Singh (GK), Jodric Abranches, Sumit Sharma Brahmacharimayum, Singamayum Shami (C), Omang Dodum (Bharat Lairenjam 59'), Md Arbash (Gurnaj Singh Grewal 80'), Chaphamayum Rohen Singh (Ahongshangbam Samson 59'), Malemngamba Singh Thokchom, Danny Meitei Laishram (Ningthoukhongjam Rishi Singh 59'), Sohum Utreja, Prashan Jajo (Yohaan Benjamin 69'). India's Sai Sudharsan solidifies his defensive technique ahead of Test series against England

London [UK], June 10 (ANI): Tamil Nadu's young top-order batter B Sai Sudharsan is one of the Indian players who has found himself in the spotlight as the countdown begins for the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, set to kick off on June 20 at Headingley. The focus tends to shift towards Sudharsan naturally, considering he is among the forerunners to feature in the number three spot for India. The 23-year-old who stands in contention for earning his maiden Test cap for India will have to bear the responsibility on his shoulders of filling a spot that Cheteshwar Pujara held. Pujara offered stability at number three, making the spot his own while raising the bar with his robust performances. The baton was eventually passed down to the newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill. While India is yet to confirm officially, the rumour mill has suggested Gill is expected to occupy the number four spot, which was up for grabs after batting maestro Virat Kohli retired from the format last month. Sudharsan, known for his defensive craft, has put his skills on display in the last two days of India's training sessions in Beckenham while facing India's fast-bowling quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh, according to Espncricinfo. During the sessions, the young southpaw wasn't fluent throughout, as thick and faint outside edges flew towards the slip and gully region. India head coach Gautam Gambhir stood a couple of yards behind, observing Sudharsan's technique while maintaining his trademark arms-folded-across-the-chest stance. During their shared conversations, Gambhir appeared to be offering some insights about his technique. Sudharsan was also spotted chatting with skipper Gill, possibly about the forward defensive technique. India Squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. "This was very difficult": Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran retires from international cricket at 29

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran surprised the world on Tuesday by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The 29-year-old, who recently dazzled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants with explosive performances, described retiring from the international circuit as 'difficult'. 'To the cricket public, after much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.' Pooran's decision comes days after he requested Cricket West Indies not to consider him for their ongoing white-ball tour of England. With over eight months left before the T20 World Cup 2026 kicks off in India and Sri Lanka, Pooran's decision serves as a massive setback for the 2016 winners. Since bursting onto the international scene in 2016, Pooran featured in 106 T20Is and 61 ODIs, garnering more than 4,258 runs across both formats. He mustered up 2,275 in the shortest format of cricket, averaging 26.14 at 136.39. While in the 50-over cricket, he tallied 1,983 runs at 39.66 while maintaining a strike rate of 99.15, laced with three centuries and 11 fifties. 'To the fans - thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates - thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all,' he said. Pooran had his last dance with the Men in Maroon during their encounter against Bangladesh at Kingstown. Bangladesh ousted the Caribbean giants with a comprehensive 80-run victory. 'Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead. With all my heart, Nicky P,' he concluded. (ANI)
