Brits blighted by Voice Note Fatigue as ‘quick' messages turn into podcasts
People saw voice notes as an easy way to communicate without having to type on mobile phones but now a growing number want to see them banned after becoming tired of them
Brits feel they are now blighted by Voice Note Fatigue as the 'quick' messages from friends have turned into full-scale podcasts. It started as a quick and easy way to stay in touch but Brits are so fed up with voice notes that some even want to see them banned.
As many as six in ten (62%) claim they have experienced Voice Note Fatigue (VNF) with 44% listening to them at double speed just to get through them faster, according to new research. While length is an issue for one in three, other frustrations include mumbling, filler words and multi-part voice note epics.
Most people would like them capped at two minutes but 14% want them banned altogether, according to the survey by Sky Mobile. Ironically, while most moan about receiving voice notes, we can't stop sending them.
Almost three quarters (73%) admit they love recording them, describing them as quicker, more expressive, and easier than typing. Brits also use them because it's easy to send a message hands-free (76%), they feel like a phone call without the pressure (68%) and are more efficient (65%).
Ben Case, managing director of connectivity at Sky, said: "Voice notes began as a quick shortcut, but now they're turning into podcasts!
'Whichever way our customers choose to communicate, with Sky Mobile they'll enjoy flexible data plans and 99% coverage, so people can stay connected in a way that suits them."
The Voice Note Etiquette Guide
Do
Keep it brief: Aim for a maximum of two minutes and remember people don't have time for a podcast
Be clear and to the point: Rambling and filler worlds are major turn-offs. Get to the point quickly
Be aware of background noise: Nobody want to hear your dog barking or train announcements
Speak clearly and enthusiastically: Muffled audio and monotone delivery make it hard to engage with your message
Don't
Send endless voice note chains: Multiple short messages create notification overload and can be frustrating to listen to
Send overly long voice notes: Anything over five minutes is pushing it!
Monologue message: Acknowledge the recipient and engage in a two-way conversation

BGT's Bruno Tonioli shares what he really thinks about stand-in judge KSI
Rumours have been swirling that the YouTube star may replace dancer Bruno after making a great impression on his first series Guest judge KSI makes a return to tomorrow night's Britain's Got Talent amid rumours ITV are eyeing him up as a permanent fixture. He took a seat on the talent show panel for the first time this series, standing in for Bruno Tonioli when he was working in the US. Not that Bruno feels threatened. He says he's a huge fan of the YouTube star. 'Well we're both young, attractive, multi-talented stars, known the world over!' teased Bruno 69. 'Joking aside, I think KSI is fantastic. I met him for the first time at the BGT auditions in Blackpool and he was such a delight. "He's a real charming man, full of energy. We attended the Brits together too which was a fabulous evening!' Tomorrow night Bruno will take his seat alongside KSI for the first time, as well as judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon. The former Strictly Come Dancing favourite says show boss Simon, 65, has been keeping him on his toes all series. 'Simon is a very mischievous man,' says Bruno. 'He always has been. When he has that glint in his eye, you know he's about to be very cheeky. I think it's partly this quality that makes him so watchable. "It's particularly exciting when the show is live – no one know what's going to happen next and Simon loves that unpredictability – we all do! 'I have it easy when it comes to being wound up by Simon as I sit on the other end of the judges' desk, it's Amanda (Holden) I feel sorry for as she bears the brunt of his naughtiness the most. But she's been sat next to him for so many years and she knows exactly how to handle him. She's a pro!" Bruno says he's in awe of his glamourous sidekicks. He also loves to compete with their risque outfits. "That woman (Amanda) is a vision, as is Alesha," Bruno enthuses. "Amanda and I share the same love of clothes and we both dare to bare. I'll be baring it for as long as I've got it, darling. Well into my 70's. "The public always look forward to seeing what the girls are wearing, and they never disappoint. Sometimes I might look at Amanda's outfit backstage and if her decolletage is deeper than mine, I'll undo another button on my shirt!" Watch the BGT final tonight on ITV from 7pm.

WNBA player Courtney Vandersloot scores ultimate victory over her wife (and teammate!)
Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot set a record on Thursday night - at the expense of her wife and longtime teammate. Vandersloot, who tallied 13 points and nine assists in a win against the Dallas Wings, became Chicago's all-time leader in points (3,728) and field goals (1,390). And the previous record holder was none other than her wife, Allie Quigley, who spent 10 seasons with Chicago from 2013 to 2022 - her last year in the WNBA. Vandersloot has also spent the majority of her career with the Sky after being drafted by the franchise in 2011. The now five-time All-Star spent the first 12 seasons of her career in the Midwest before joining the Liberty for two seasons. She re-joined the Sky in February. 'What means the most is my time spent here,' Vandersloot told reporters afterwards, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. ' 'It just speaks to the commitment that I made to the Chicago Sky and their commitment to me as well. They drafted me and let me develop. We had a lot of tough seasons. It wasn't always easy.' While Vandersloot has now overtaken her wife's record, the couple made tons of memories together on the Sky, as they spent 10 seasons as teammates. In 2021, both were a vital part of a championship-winning team, while they were both also All-Stars in 2019. The pair, who were married in 2018, reportedly met in 2013 while traveling back to the US from Europe, where both were playing during the WNBA offseason. According to Sports Illustrated, they were on the same flight and even in the same limousine to Sky physicals, with Quigley hoping to earn a roster spot after getting a training camp invite. They began dating the following September - after that year's WNBA season had concluded - and ultimately got married seven years ago in Seattle. The Sky earned their first win of the season on Wednesday with their victory, and Kamilla Cardoso led the team with 23 points.
