New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: New developments regarding the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) are expected to be announced during the summit of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 on June 14, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He stated that the MMC was established with a clear mission: to defend media freedom, ensure fair and responsible reporting, and serve as a channel for the public to voice complaints against the media in a civil manner.
"In building this ecosystem, another important achievement was recorded this year when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February.
"After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital media," he said.
Fahmi said this when speaking at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here on Tuesday (June 3).
Also present were Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as Bernama's top management.
Fahmi expressed confidence that with the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council and other initiatives the government is laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media.
Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration on June 14, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries are invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships.
Fahmi also said that on May 14, 2025, the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted, covering entities that disseminate news through various platforms such as newspapers, publications, radio, television, as well as other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media.
"This amendment also aims to ensure that Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communication technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry," he said.
Meanwhile, May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who have become a medium to shape the minds of an informed society in fostering cooperation and driving positive change in the industry.
At today's event, Fahmi also officiated the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making Bernama the first media agency in Malaysia to utilise a recreational vehicle, or motorhome, equipped with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be dynamically deployed to disseminate news quickly.
"Congratulations and well done to Bernama for always striving to improve the quality of its services and excel as a trusted source of news.
"I believe that the Bernama Mobile Studio facility can strengthen external coverage operations and news production with greater flexibility," said Fahmi. - Bernama

He said the figure remains below the 40 per cent target outlined in the National Transport Policy 2019–2030. 'The national transport policy from 2019 to 2030 is already in place. So, our challenge is how to ensure that this policy is realised according to its intended goals,' he said when met after the Ilmuwan Malaysia Madani Siri 6 forum at Menara Prasarana here yesterday. The forum discussed the topic 'Transportation for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport', chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In addition to Loke, other panel members were President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Commenting further, Loke said the implementation of the 'Road to Rail' initiative is currently being carried out in phases and is expected to have a significant impact on the country's logistics sector. Anwar congratulates S. Korea president on election win
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as the president of South Korea. He said the victory marked a turning point for South Korea, a nation that had emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve. 'The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions and of national purpose. 'I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations in trade and technology and in peace and security, as well as the enduring ties between our peoples,' Anwar said in a Facebook post yesterday. Malaysia–South Korea relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in November last year, a milestone reflecting shared ambitions. Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of Asean for 2025, hoped the regional bloc would play a greater role in South Korea's regional outlook, Bernama reported. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec). 'As Chairs of Asean and Apec in 2025 respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives. 'In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between South-East Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,' Anwar said. He also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead. He said he looked forward to meeting Lee in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean Summit and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting later that month. Lee officially began his five-year term yesterday after the National Election Commission confirmed his victory during a plenary session. The liberal Democratic Party candidate won with 49.42% of the vote, defeating Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15%.

M'sia, Russia eye scholarship programme expansion
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Russia will explore the expansion of scholarship programmes during a meeting scheduled to take place in Malaysia this year, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (pic). He added that the Malaysia-Russia Joint Commission Meeting on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation (JC- ESTC) in November aims to strengthen relations between the two countries. 'Special focus will also be given to preparations for the Malaysia-Russia Mineral Resources Dialogue and the Higher Education Forum, two key platforms to be held concurrently with the JC-ESTC meeting. 'These events are expected to bring together industry leaders, academics and researchers from both countries to enhance bilateral cooperation,' Zambry said in a Facebook statement yesterday. The meeting follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Russia last month, during which he tasked several ministries, including the Higher Education Ministry, with follow-up responsibilities, reported Bernama. According to Zambry, the plans were discussed during a courtesy call by Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl Latypov earlier. 'I am confident that the cooperation between Malaysia and Russia will be further explored, fostering the development of networks across various sectors and creating enhanced opportunities and successes for the people of both nations. 'The strong commitment shown by the Russian government, which also recognises Malaysia's education system as one of the best hubs in the region, underscores the need for local institutions of higher learning to continuously improve their performance,' the statement read.
