Ayo Edebiri makes "surreal" visit to Boston Latin, credits school with contributing to her success

CBS News10-04-2025

"The Bear" actor and Boston native
Ayo Edebiri
paid a visit to her alma mater Boston Latin School on Thursday, where she spoke to students about her time there before she was honored by the mayor.
Joined by Mayor Michelle Wu, Edebiri called it "very, very surreal" to be back at her high school, telling the student body she envied them getting out of class for the assembly.
"I will say that the people who I consider my closest friends, I went to Latin with and are still in my life and I'm hopeful will be in my life forever," said Edebiri. "It's such a specific experience going to this school ... there's a rigor that I have, a level of care that I think that I have that would not be possible without having gone to this school. I think it really shapes you and molds you."
Edebiri also spoke about how the diverse student body at Boston Latin prepared her.
"There's so many people who were from completely different walks of life than where I was from," said Edebiri, who got cheers from the audience when she said she was from Dorchester. "Coming here to school, I was like, oh, I didn't have friends from any other neighborhoods in Boston and friends from different religious backgrounds and not many different ethnic backgrounds. By the time I was ready to go to college, I felt, like, ready to meet the world."
Edebiri said she started doing improv at Boston Latin when she was in eighth grade and said doing so changed her life.
"I was really shy, I was really not the most confident public speaker," said Edebiri, who remembered reciting a speech from "Julius Caesar." "I'm almost 30 and I still remember it. I remember that performance specifically. I was so nervous, I was shaking. I remember just looking into Ms. McDonald's eyes because if I don't, I might pass out. But then I did it, I made it to the end. And then she was like, 'That was really good!' And I was like, maybe something's here."
Edebiri also said Latin taught her to face challenges and always had teachers who were there to help her understand things, like math problems.
After speaking with Wu, Edeberi took some questions from the students in the audience. When asked what her advice is for someone looking to get into the entertainment industry, the Edeberi shared something she heard from a teacher at NYU. "Being in the entertainment industry is a game of attrition. It's not a game of luck, or chance, or skill, even sometimes. It's really a matter of attrition and being able to stick it out because it can be a very unpredictable, volatile industry. And being able to be steadfast and be able to stick it out is, I think, one of the most valuable things you can do."
At the end of the event, Wu presented Edebiri with a proclamation naming April 10, 2025 as Ayo Edebiri Day. Wu said the honor was to recognize Edebiri for her accomplishments as a Boston native.
Ayo Edebiri is best known for her work on "The Bear," for which she won an Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and Critics' Choice Award. Edebiri has also appeared on the TV show "Abbott Elementary," co-starred in the movie "Bottoms" and voiced a character in the Disney Pixar movie "Inside Out 2." She graduated from Boston Latin in 2013 before going on to NYU.

Emmys Twist: Dept. Q Enters Drama Series Race at 11th Hour, Potentially Upending 2025 Contest (Exclusive)

Did Netflix just throw a grenade into the Emmy race for the second year in a row? TVLine has learned exclusively that Dept. Q, the Matthew Goode-fronted Scottish thriller that dropped May 29, just two days shy of the eligibility cutoff for this year's Emmys, is being submitted in the Drama Series categories. The acclaimed nine-episode mystery from Queen's Gambit auteur Scott Frank enters a crowded field that includes Severance, The Pitt, The White Lotus, The Last of Us and Netflix's own The Diplomat. Adolescence Rises to No. 2 on Netflix's All-Time Top 10, Passing Stranger Things 4 - And There It Will Stay If all of this sounds vaguely familiar it's because just one year ago Netflix similarly sent Emmy handicappers heads' spinning with the late-April release of Baby Reindeer. Richard Gadd's searing, semi-autobiographical dramedy — which appeared on the kudos scene a scant one month before the close of eligibility — went on to essentially sweep Limited Series categories at last September's Emmys. It remains to be seen if a similar fate awaits Dept. Q, which earlier this week hit No. 2 on Netflix's consumer-facing Top 10 chart and boasts an impressive 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (its critical score stands at a strong 84%). Dept. Q, based on the book series by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, centers on a cranky Edinburgh detective (played by Good Wife alum Goode) who sets out solve a cold case involving a missing prosecutor (played by Queen's Gambit alum Chloe Pirrie). In addition to possibly playing spoiler in the Outstanding Drama Series contest, Dept. Q is poised to be a contender in the acting races as well. A Netflix rep confirms to TVLine that Goode and Pirrie will be competing in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Lead Actress in a Drama Series categories, respectively. The show's supporting cast — which includes Boardwalk Empire vet Kelly Macdonald and Game of Thrones' Kate Dickie — is equally as formidable. Have you binged ? On June 5, 2025, the legendary band WAR was honored with the 2,814th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, commemorating both their 55-year music legacy and the 50th anniversary of their iconic 1975 album, Why Can't We Be Friends? Present at the ceremony were original and longtime members, including Lonnie Jordan, Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott, Harold Ray Brown, Jerry Goldstein, and Laurian Miller. Percussionist Marcos Reyes, who has been with the band for 25 years and hails from Lamont, Calif., also attended, expressing gratitude for being part of such a historic moment. The star-studded event took place on the famed Hollywood Boulevard, adjacent to Amoeba Music, the world's largest independent record store. Emceed by music producer and Walk of Famer Jimmy Jam, the event featured actor and comedian George Lopez as a guest speaker. Lopez, a longtime fan of WAR, notably used their hit "Low Rider" as the theme song for his self-titled sitcom, George Lopez, which aired from 2002 to 2007. In a nod to their cultural roots and the enduring popularity of "Low Rider," the band arrived at the ceremony in six custom low-rider vehicles provided by local car clubs, making for a memorable entrance for the special occasion. Formed in 1969, WAR is renowned for its eclectic fusion of funk, soul, jazz, Latin, rock, and street music. Their socially conscious lyrics and distinctive sound have resonated with audiences for decades. The band's impressive achievements include over 50 million albums sold, 20 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum records, three Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations, and an entry into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. The ceremony also celebrated the 50th anniversary of their seminal album, Why Can't We Be Friends?, which features the titular track that became an anthem for unity and was famously transmitted into space by NASA during the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. Blake Lively Gets Org Support Amid Justin Baldoni Trial

A spokesperson for Blake Lively issued a statement as the number of organizations submitting amicus briefs in support of her amid her legal battle with Justin Baldoni hit 19. In December, Blake sued her It Ends With Us co-star and director, as well as the studio Wayfarer and other parties, alleging sexual harassment and retaliation. Justin subsequently sued Blake, alleging defamation and extortion, among other things. Both parties have denied the allegations of the other. Before we get into the update, you might be wondering what an amicus brief is. It stems from the Latin phrase "friend of the court," which allows people who aren't parties in the case to submit documents of support, arguing that the impact of the case will also affect them. So, why are all these orgs issuing amicus briefs? Let's take one that's been signed by 14 women's and anti-violence organizations. In it, they argue, "The retaliatory defamation lawsuit instigated by the Wayfarer parties against Blake Livelyis another example of 'DARVO' tactics (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) in the post-#MeToo era where perpetrators of 'sexual violence,' in particular sexual harassment, attempt to silence their victims into submission." After a new brief was filed this week by Child USA, a nonprofit against child abuse, a spokesperson for Blake issued a statement to BuzzFeed that read, "19 leading survivors and organizations devoted to women's rights, children's rights and domestic violence have now signed onto four separate amicus briefs. All are united in opposing Justin Baldoni's attempt to dismantle a law designed to protect women who speak up—simply to protect himself." Justin's attorney has been reached for comment. "The latest briefs, filed by Child USA and Sanctuary for Families, add the voices of renowned nonprofits, victim advocates, and experts from around the world who are dedicated to safeguarding the rights and well-being of people who speak up," they continued. Justin has never been accused of child abuse. "Rather than defend his case on the facts, Baldoni is now contradicting years of his own public persona—abandoning the message of his #MeToo YouTube's, podcasts, TED Talks, and interviews, where he once upon a time urged men 'to listen to the women in your life…to hold their anguish and actually believe them, even if what they're saying is against you.' These women and organizations are sounding the alarm about his DARVO tactics, and the chilling effect they could have well beyond this case," the statement concluded. BuzzFeed has reached out to a representative for Justin for comment.
