Applications Open for Second Meat Minds Programme
Launched last year, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) said it had received an extremely positive response to the initiative and is on the look-out for its second group of recruits.
Successful applicants will be given exclusive access to the latest industry insight and professional expertise during themed sessions and from a personal mentor. They will enjoy opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the supply chain, from farm to fork, and forge new connections.
HCC's Producer and Processor Senior Officer Lowri Thomas said:
'We are pleased to offer this unique opportunity again this year to young and enthusiastic individuals. Members could be farmers, processors, butchers, retailers, chefs – or anyone involved in the red meat supply chain between the age of 21-35. They must be passionate about red meat production and promotion, interested in research and development and keen to see developments within the industry.'
Participants will need to commit to a total of six days – five themed days and one other spent with an assigned mentor in the workplace. They will benefit from numerous networking opportunities and industry know-how from guest speakers. As a group, they will be expected to work collectively on an industry focused project of their choice to produce results that will benefit the industry.
Lowri added:
'We have very much enjoyed working with a great group of people this year and look forward to providing the next group with a whole host of worthwhile experiences.'
2024-2025 group member Dafydd Walters said:
'We've had opportunities to meet people from within the sector and make valuable connections. We've heard from a dietician, we've touched on marketing, on nutrition, animal health and the environment, we've gained a real perspective of the red meat supply chain. The programme has been unique and a fantastic experience.'
Daniel Owen is also a member of the first group. He said:
'We have met with several retail representatives as well as scientists and organisations that have taught us everything from farm to fork. The programme provides you with invaluable experience in the fact that you meet leaders within the industry and get to create connections with like-minded individuals your age.'
The deadline to apply for the second round of Meat Minds is 5pm on Wednesday 2 July. The application form can be downloaded from the HCC website.

Meat Minds: Eight young professionals secure place on scheme
The scheme connects individuals aged 21 to 35 who work across the red meat supply chain, offering five themed sessions to develop their understanding of farming practices, animal health, eating quality, and consumer trends. The group includes Ben Roberts from Wrexham, owner of a butchery business; Bethany Rogers from Builth Wells, who works in lamb procurement for Pilgrims; and Emma Williams from Anglesey, a farmer with an on-farm retail business. Erin McNaught from Bala, a farmer and farming spokesperson, and Lynfa Jones from Welshpool, breed secretary for the Welsh Black Society, are also taking part. Rachel Jones from Newtown, a lecturer in agriculture, Kepak's beef procurement worker Richard Watkin from Malvern, and Wynnstay's agri trader Thomas Davies from Aberaeron are also involved. Lowri Thomas, producer and processor senior officer at HCC, said: "The first year of the Meat Minds programme succeeded in its goal, which was to connect and stimulate discussion amongst members of the supply chain." Participants will be paired with industry mentors and spend a day at their workplace. They will also collaborate on a research project, with findings shared across the sector.

New HCC Scholar Seeks Practical Sustainability Solutions for Farmers in Wales
Ben Lloyd James, HCC Scholar 2025 A new entrant into the farming sector and agricultural consultant from Ceredigion has been announced as Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) Scholar for 2025. Ben Lloyd James from Abermeurig, Lampeter has been awarded the Scholarship to investigate practical solutions for reducing GHG emissions in pasture-based livestock systems in Wales. He said: 'The Welsh red meat sector is under increasing pressure to prove its environmental credentials. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane, are central to the conversation — and how we respond will define the future of our industry. It's a topic that matters now more than ever and if we get it right, we don't just protect our sector — we position it as part of the climate solution. That starts with learning from those who are already a few steps ahead — and bringing those lessons home in ways that make sense on the ground. That's why I've chosen this topic and why now is exactly the right time to explore it.' As someone actively working within the Welsh livestock industry, Ben sees both a challenge and opportunity for the red meat sector. He said: 'Through my work, I experience first-hand the pride and pressure felt by red meat producers when it comes to environmental performance. This has led me to develop a strong interest in helping farmers strike the right balance between productivity and sustainability.' He intends to focus his study on farming systems in Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and plans to attend the European Grassland Federation Symposium in Reading for further insight into sustainable grassland management practices. 'The scholarship will allow me to learn from countries that are ahead in integrating low-emission strategies into real farming systems, which is why I chose to focus on Europe. Countries in Europe offer diverse but relatable farming systems, strong policy frameworks and practical examples of how red meat production can align with climate and sustainability goals, whilst wrestling with challenges that are similar to the ones we face here in Wales. 'I want to contribute to a sustainable future that nurtures both the land and the next generation and help shape an industry that's proud of its past, ambitious for its future, and equipped to make sustainability real and practical at farm level.' James Powell, HCC Scholarship Association Vice Chair with Ben Lloyd James at the Royal Welsh Show HCC's Industry Development Executive James Ruggeri said: 'We are delighted to announce Ben as the recipient of the HCC Scholarship this year. He has practical on-farm experience, and his consultancy work means that he is already actively supporting farmers with the very challenges that he hopes to delve deeper into with his scholarship study. He is keen to bring back proven, practical tools that producers in Wales can use, and will share them with the farmers and businesses that he works with every day. 'His background, long-term industry commitment and passion makes him a perfect candidate for our Scholarship, and we are excited to hear about his experiences and findings during the course of the year.' HCC has been offering the annual scholarship for more than 20 years to applicants who are employed on a full-time basis within the Welsh red meat industry. The Scholarship allows them to study an aspect of production or processing in a country of their choice with recent examples looking at topics such as breeding sheep for better resistance to worms, the reputation of the suckler cow, techno grazing and conservation management.

Broadcaster and adventurer to host Powys Business Awards
Welsh adventurer and broadcaster with more than 20 years experience, Lowri Morgan, will be hosting this year's Powys Business Awards ceremony. A broadcaster for more than two decades, Lowri Morgan has been announced as the host of the 2025 ceremony for the Powys Business Awards, scheduled to be held at The Hafren, Newtown on Friday, October 17. Lowri said: 'It's a real privilege to host the Powys Business Awards. These awards are all about drive, passion and perseverance – qualities I've seen in the wildest parts of the world and which I know are alive and well in the business community of Powys. 'I'm excited to celebrate the inspiring stories behind this year's finalists.'
