Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano both suspended following trilogy fight
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have both been handed mandatory suspensions following their trilogy fight. The Irish icon, who had won the previous two meetings, won on a majority decision after a tactical battle at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Two of the judges scored the bout 97-93 in Taylor's favour. The third judge was unable to split them after 10 tight rounds, scoring it 95-95. Taylor ruled out a fourth meeting with the Puerto Rican, but was cagey when asked whether she would continue to fight.
She said: 'I don't know, I just don't want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard. I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior. It's a pleasure to share a ring with her. We have made history three times. We are history makers forever.
'I thought I was boxing very smart, she wasn't able to catch me very much tonight. But it's always close against Amanda.'
Serrano, who has suffered three of her four professional losses to Taylor, said she had tried to work 'smarter, not harder.' The 36-year-old said: 'We tried to stay with the long punches and one twos, and it just wasn't enough.'
Both fighters will now enjoy a period of rest, the initial part of which is obligatory under the rules of the New York State Athletic Commission, which the fight fell under. The commission dictates they cannot fight again for at least seven days, which naturally wouldn't have occurred anyway.
The rulebook states: 'No licensed professional combative sports participant shall be allowed to participate in any combative sport match or exhibition in this State until at least seven days have elapsed since his or her last match or exhibition.'
It adds: 'And no licensed combative sports participant shall compete in any combative sport match or exhibition within seven days of competing in such a match or exhibition in this State.'
The third meeting between the two was cagier than their previous clashes, simmering throughout with fewer punches landed. Neither fighter was able to impose themselves early on, with just three punches connecting in the opening round.
With both fighters operating from more of a distance than their previous meetings, Taylor looked to control the centre of the ring and landed some good counter shots as she drew Serrano onto her.
Several rounds could have gone either way as the fight built to a tense climax, Serrano coming forward more and forcing Taylor into a corner in the fifth round, but the champion fought her way out. Taylor was marked under the right eye in the eighth, but edged the final two rounds to secure the verdict.
In the co-headline bout, American Alycia Baumgardner retained her undisputed super featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Spain's Jennifer Miranda.

Aidan O'Brien puts Minnie Hauk near the top of Arc list after fourth Oaks win
The winner of the Cheshire Oaks, Oaks and Irish Oaks, added the Yorkshire Oaks to her haul at York on Thursday to improve her chances in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Aidan O'Brien put Minnie Hauk near the top of his list of candidates for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after she completed an Oaks four-timer at York on Thursday. The three-year-old lined up in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks having already won the Cheshire Oaks, English Oaks and Irish Oaks. With only four runners the Ryan Moore-ridden Minnie Hauk went off the 8-15 favourite and emerged a comfortable three and a half lengths winner over the David O'Meara-trained Estrange. O'Brien said: 'She's beautiful, she does everything right, she cruises, she's a lovely mover and obviously the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf, all those races are there for her. 'Ryan said the (Breeders' Cup) Turf, so she's obviously given him an unbelievable feel. Ryan gave her a class ride, he was very cool on her. She is classy and he gave her a very confident ride. 'It wasn't going to be a Mickey Mouse race today, they were going to go an even gallop without going crazy. Ryan has always said the stronger the tempo, the better we're going to see. She's very exciting.' Victory was a welcome filip 24 hours after Eclipse winner Delacroix was well beaten by Ombudsman in their head-to-head for the Juddmonte International and Derby winner Lambourn was defeated in the Great Voltigeur Stakes. Minnie Hauk was cut to 10-1 (from 14-1) for the Arc by William Hill whose market is headed by Kalpana on 5-1. 'It was good for Ryan, he had a tough day yesterday and things didn't work out but the professional that he is he didn't flinch,' O'Brien went on. 'It was a nicely-run race, even though there were only four in it, I think the second is a nice filly, isn't she. She's won well in the end our filly, she obviously stays very well and always finishes her race off well. She doesn't kill herself getting there but she's always finishing. 'She has to be close to the top of our pecking order for the Arc, she's an improving filly at this time of year. She could go to the Breeders' Cup Turf but also the Arc. Whirl could go with her. 'Whirl could go to the Vermeille or Irish Champion, but there's a good chance Delacroix goes back to the Irish Champion and if John (Gosden) brings his horse (Ombudsman) it will be great.' Minnie Hauk hits another winning note in Yorkshire Oaks
One of two runners for Aidan O'Brien in the Group One feature, the daughter of Frankel came into the York Group One with Cheshire, English and Irish renewals on her CV this term and was ridden by Ryan Moore as the 8-15 favourite. Her stablemate Garden Of Eden set the pace and David O'Meara's Estrange did ensure the winner had a race, but the triumph was ultimately light work by three and a half lengths on the line. O'Brien said: 'She's beautiful, she does everything right, she cruises, she's a lovely mover and obviously the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf, all those races are there for her. O'Brien – who saw Delacroix and dual Derby winner Lambourn suffer defeat on Wednesday – went on: 'We've always felt the better the race the better she'll be. Hopefully we can keep her in training as a four-year-old and enjoy her. 'There's no secret to the success. First of all we have a very good trainer but we try to breed the best to the best as we all do, like Godolphin and Juddmonte. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. 'Yesterday was not a disaster, but it was tough. It's tough when you lose which is why you have to appreciate when you win because it is not easy. 'Minnie Hauk beat Whirl at Epsom and dare I say their next races will be the Arc and the Breeders' Cup for one or the other and hopefully they'll have good chances in those races.'
