Target and Ulta mutually agree not to renew partnership launched in 2021

NEW YORK (AP) — Target and Ulta Beauty are parting ways, ending a partnership launched in 2021 that created in-store shops filled with beauty products at hundreds of the discounter's stores. According to a joint release issued Thursday, the companies said they have 'mutually agreed' not to renew their pact, which concludes in August 2026. Until then, the Ulta Beauty experience at Target will continue in Target stores and on the release said. Ulta is currently in 600 of Target's roughly 1,980 stores, according to a Target spokesperson. 'For 35 years, Ulta Beauty has revolutionized how people experience beauty — bringing together an unmatched assortment from mass to luxury — and our partnership with Target was one of many unique ways we have brought the power of beauty to guests nationwide,' said Amiee Bayer-Thomas, chief retail officer of Ulta Beauty, in a statement. Rick Gomez, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Target, said in a statement he was committed to 'offering the beauty experience consumers have come to expect from Target.' The partnership was announced in 2020 and came as the coronavirus pandemic upended shopping habits and more people tried to minimize potential exposure to the virus through one-stop shopping. COVID had dampened sales of lipstick as people wore masks, but the skincare business enjoyed stronger sales. The shops are about 1,000 square feet and carry makeup, skincare, and fragrance and operated beside existing beauty sections in Target stores. The deal was a way for both Target and Ulta to increase their customer base. 'It's a combination of two winning retailers that have great momentum in the market that can redefine the category,' Target CEO Brian Cornell told The Associated Press back in 2020. The announcement comes as Target is struggling to regain its footing with its shoppers who are pulling back on discretionary items and are shopping at other rivals that they believe to be lower price or offer better merchandise. Target is slated to report its fiscal second-quarter results on Wednesday. Target is also expected to announce a succession plan for a new CEO to replace president and CEO Brian Cornell, who took the helm in 2014. In September 2022, Target extended Cornell's contract for three more years, but the retailer never publicly gave an official time frame.

Trump reveals shocking Social Security data involving illegal immigrants

President Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that nearly 275,000 illegal immigrants have been removed from the Social Security system. 'Last month, I signed the One Big Beautiful Bill, and allowed No Tax on Social Security for our great seniors…and to protect our benefits, we've already kicked nearly 275,000 illegal aliens off of the Social Security system…,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. Trump said many of the illegal immigrants who were on Social Security have 'left the country' but the United States was still 'sending them checks all the time.' Removing the illegals, Trump said, is 'making the system strong.' 'Biden never kicked anybody off. Everybody joined and we're carrying out historic deportations to remove many more illegals committing Social Security fraud. It was Social Security fraud that was taking place at levels that nobody has ever seen,' Trump said from the Oval Office. Some experts have warned that the Social Security program will run out of funds by 2034, allowing just 81 percent of beneficiaries to receive their benefits. The Trump administration said maintaining the retirement program is a 'top priority.' 'The 'One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act' provides historic tax relief to America's seniors,' a Social Security Administration (SSA) spokesperson said, according to Newsweek. 'As Commissioner [Frank] Bisignano has repeatedly emphasized, ensuring the long-term financial health of these trust funds remains a top priority.' 'The Social Security Administration is committed to working with Congress and other stakeholders to protect and strengthen these vital programs, ensuring that millions of Americans can continue to rely on Social Security for a secure retirement and support in times of disability — both now and in the future. We remain focused on responsible stewardship and transparent communication,' the spokesperson added.

Ulta mini-stores leaving Targets in 2026. See end date.

Ulta Beauty will close their mini-stores in Target locations by this time next year, the cosmetics chain announced on Aug. 14. Ulta confirmed the conclusion of its partnership with Target in a news release, as both companies "mutually agreed not to renew" their current deal, which concludes in August 2026. The partnership was rolled out in August 2021 to give Target shoppers more access to Ulta's beauty products and brands. 'For 35 years, Ulta Beauty has revolutionized how people experience beauty – bringing together an unmatched assortment from mass to luxury – and our partnership with Target was one of many unique ways we have brought the power of beauty to guests nationwide,' Amiee Bayer-Thomas, chief retail officer for Ulta Beauty, said in the release. Rick Gomez, the executive vice president and chief commercial officer for Target, said in a statement that the company is "proud of (its) shared success with Ulta Beauty." 'We look forward to what's ahead and remain committed to offering the beauty experience consumers have come to expect from Target – one centered on an exciting mix of beauty brands with continuous newness, all at an unbeatable value," Gomez said. Why end the Target, Ulta partnership now? Target has struggled with decreased demand as discretionary purchases decline due to worries about the economy and rising inflation, Reuters reported. The retailer has also experienced declining sales, national boycotts and lawsuits related to its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices. Additionally, many of Target's products are sourced from countries where President Donald Trump has placed broad-based tariffs. After announcing the partnership split, shares of Target dropped 2%, and Ulta shares declined about 1% Aug. 14. According to Reuters, beauty segment sales increased 5% in 2024, compared to a 0.9% decrease in overall merchandise sales for the year. With beauty product sales increasing, it's not clear why the companies ended their five-year partnership now. How many Target and Ulta Beauty stores exist? Target is a major retailer in the U.S., operating 1,981 stores in all 50 states and Washington, DC. According to the National Retail Federation, it's the eighth largest U.S. retailer, behind Walmart, and Costco Wholesale. As of May 2025, Ulta Beauty operates 1,451 stores across all 50 states. More than 600 Ulta mini-stores operate within Target retailers, the Wall Street Journal reported. Shoppers will be able to purchase Ulta products from Target's stores and online through August 2026. Reuters contributed to this story. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Ulta Beauty, Target to end mini-store partnership in 2026
