Bozo Mikulic comeback milestone revealed as St Johnstone defender is driven on by Perth club 'love'
Bozo Mikulic could be just two months away from a major comeback milestone, St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari has revealed.
The Croatian defender suffered an ACL injury in February, the second time he has needed knee surgery in his career.
His recuperation is progressing well, Valakari reported.
The head coach is reluctant to predict a return ahead of schedule.
But the current hope and expectation is Mikulic being able to run on the McDiarmid Park training pitches by August.
'Things are going well with Bozo,' said Valakari.
'He was here for five days at the end of the season, so it was great to see the big man back.
'He is now home in Croatia and will stay there until August, working at a clinic over there with his personal trainer every day.
'It is the same clinic where he repaired his injury the last time, which is good because they know him, and he knows them, so they have a plan of exactly what he needs to do.
'It's a very high-profile place, so he is in very good hands.
'If everything goes to plan, he will be running back on the field sometime in August.
'In my mind, I am thinking Christmas with him.
'I know he will say October but even then, you need some football inside you.
'So, it's by then I think we will have the proper Bozo back on the field.'
The 'proper Bozo' was a centre-half winning headers, making tackles, scoring winning goals and, all in all, making St Johnstone a far more solid defensive unit.
'How we have missed him,' Valakari admitted.
'When he was back over here, Bozo was crying because of what happened.
'This club gave football back to him.
'He wasn't playing when we signed him, and he loves it here because he's got his career back again.
'We are looking forward to that because I know Bozo – he has the kind of mentality we need in our team.
'He is a leader, he has determination, and he is desperate to help this club.'

And I think once the season's over on Saturday then he'll have a bit more thinking time with a lot more space to be able to do that. "I wouldn't shut the door totally on it. I think I gave probably a number of weeks back my feeling what may happen, just having experienced so many of these situations and what it can look like. I would definitely say it's not 100 per cent it'll be his last game."

Airdrie fan got 'buzz' from bar fight with St Johnstone rivals before Scottish Cup tie, court hears
A pair of thugs who helped ambush St Johnstone fans in a pub have been banned from attending football for two years. A court heard Airdrie supporter Cameron Patey got 'a buzz' out of causing trouble. Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into a bar in the Lanarkshire town where Saints fans had gathered before a Scottish Cup tie. Airdrie Sheriff Court heard a group of home fans confronted the Perth side's supporters and a fight spilled on to the street. Patey, 22, Ryan Lawrence, 29, and Nathan Dunsmore, 26, admitted causing a breach of the peace by fighting, shouting and swearing on January 20 last year. It happened before Airdrie beat Saints 1-0 in a fourth round tie. The trouble was linked to a message posted by a St Johnstone fan who tweeted: 'Any Airdrie supporters wanting a square go should come to the West End Bar. Bring your mates – you'll need them.' Annette Ward, prosecuting, described how the Airdrie fans ambushed their rivals at the West End Bar. She told the court CCTV caught them leaving another pub. 'They had their hoods up and their faces partially covered with scarves. 'The three accused were part of the group. 'A large group of St Johnstone fans were already inside the West End Bar. 'As soon as the Airdrie supporters arrived there was an altercation that turned into a scuffle between the two groups. 'This quickly spilled onto the street and in the course of that an individual was assaulted by two unidentified males.' The court heard a fourth Airdrie fan was seen on CCTV picking up two bottles and throwing them into the pub. He was also charged but has since died. Patey has a previous conviction which resulted in him being given a football banning order. Lawrence also has football-related previous convictions. The court heard, when asked about his role in the trouble, Patey told a social worker: 'It's an escape. It gives me a buzz.' But in court, defence lawyer Tony Linden said: 'He now describes his conduct as pathetic. His days of attending football matches and seeking out trouble are gone. 'He plans to leave the Airdrie area and has an offer of employment with a starting salary of £40,000.' Fraser McKinnon, defending Lawrence, said he accepted responsibility for his behaviour but added: 'From the CCTV, it appears his involvement was at the lower end of the scale.' Nicky Matteo, for Dunsmore, told the court: 'This happened at a time when he was drinking and taking drugs to excess.' Sheriff Joseph Hughes imposed two-year football banning orders on Patey and Lawrence, both of Airdrie. These will cover all regulated games in the UK and the pair are also banned from watching televised football in licensed premises. The sheriff said: 'I'm satisfied this offence was related to the football match that day. 'It matters not if it happened before the game started. 'It is appropriate to impose these banning orders to prevent violence or disorder at, or in connection with, football matches.' Patey was also warned he must behave himself over the next nine months while Lawrence will be under supervision for two years and electronically tagged for nine months, meaning he's confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day. Sentence on Dunsmore, who is in custody on other matters, was deferred until December.

What are Raith Rovers' priorities in the transfer market?
With Liam Dick following Jamie Gullan through the exit door at Stark's Park, there is a clearer picture of what is needed by Raith Rovers in the summer transfer market. When the Kirkcaldy club announced their retained and released list on May 14, it included six out-of-contract players they remained in discussions with. Ross Matthews and Callum Smith have since penned extensions. But Gullan's departure for St Johnstone and Dick's decision to leave, with a move to Ayr United expected, leaves clear holes in the squad that remains. With the futures of Andy McNeil and Callum Hannah uncertain for the moment, Raith have 15 players signed for next season, although realistically that is likely to be 14 since one of that number is the disgruntled Sam Stanton. So, what might manager Barry Robson look to add in the coming weeks as Rovers prepare for next term? With Kevin Dabrowski away, McNeil out of contract and loan star Josh Rae having returned to parent club St Johnstone, there are currently no first-team keepers left at Raith. There is an interest in Rae after he was told he was free to depart Saints, but it will depend on the level of any transfer fee. Should the 24-year-old be enticed back and McNeil signs on again then it will be job done. If not, however, there is an obvious issue. With just over five weeks until the Premier Sports Cup opener against Elgin City, recruiting two goalies has to be high on the list of priorities. The back three that finished the season for Raith remains in place for next term. Jordan Doherty, Paul Hanlon and Callum Fordyce helped the team to four clean sheets during the ten-game unbeaten run that pushed them so close to a promotion play-off spot. However, with Euan Murray released and Dick deciding his future lies elsewhere there are no further choices for central defence. A couple of centre-halves look necessary – and that is before you consider the fact that the versatile Doherty may be better suited as a wing-back. If it is not to be Doherty, then a more defensive option on the right flank and back-up for Lewis Stevenson at left wing-back appear desirable. Matthews staying on for another year, allied to Scott Brown and Shaun Byrne, gives Raith a strong heart of the pitch. Kai Montagu will also be another year further on in his promising development and will be adequate back-up if required. However, given the issues with the recalcitrant Stanton, a more attacking, box-to-box midfielder in the mould of a modern-day 'eight' could be on the shopping list. Further forward in the number ten position, Dylan Easton continued to prove his worth to Rovers last season with 13 goals and three assists in 35 league games. And it is a role that Lewis Vaughan is also extremely adept at filling if needs be. With Gullan having opted for a move to Perth, Aidan Connolly freed and the expiry of loan agreements for Aiden Marsh and Finlay Pollock, this is an area that desperately needs attention. Following knee surgery, Callum Smith is unlikely to be fully fit again for the kick-off to the competitive action in the cup and is only now contracted until January. Jack Hamilton is also recovering from an operation, on his ankle, and there must also be doubts over when he will be back to top form. All of which leaves Vaughan as the only fit and available out-and-out striker on the books. Helped by five goals in the last-day demolition of Queen's Park, Rovers found the net 47 times last season. It was some way short of the 58 from the previous campaign – and well away from the 72 goals scored by champions Falkirk. They could well do with at least one attacker who can add goals to the work-rate expected of Robson's team.
