NAB Bank issues urgent warning after woman loses nearly $50,000 in alarming new scam
A quick-thinking bank team saved a widow from losing $50,000 by stepping in just in time to stop a scammer trying to trick her.
The 84-year-old widow, who is named as Stella, walked into her local NAB branch in East Maitland, New South Wales, in late February while on the phone.
She appeared visibly nervous and asked staff to raise her daily transfer limit from $5,000 to $50,000, claiming she needed to send money to her son.
Hunter Valley customer advisor Tiffany Bailey said she immediately became suspicious when the person on the phon hung up as soon as she spoke.
'Alarm bells started ringing for me straight away,' she said on Wednesday, adding that she knew something wasn't right.
Ms Bailey searched the phone number and the results suggested it was linked to a known scam.
'That's when we were able to sit down with Stella and ask what was really going on,' she said.
'Stella burst into tears, telling us she was being threatened by a man claiming to be from a major tech company.'
'He'd been pressuring her for days into making a $50,000 transfer to settle an outstanding debt,' Ms Bailey said.
The NAB advisor said Stella's adult son, who was waiting at the front of the branch, had no idea she was being scammed.
The bank also said the alleged criminal had remote access to the widow's computer and created images that convinced her she owed money to the scammer.
Branch manager Vanessa Kruger said the unknown perpetrator had coached Stella on what to say to bank staff.
When the unknown man started calling Stella again, Branch manager Vanessa Kruger answered the phone.
'I told him that we were from NAB and we were on to him,' she said.
'I told him to stop calling Stella and leave her alone. We'd also be reporting him to police.
'He hung up straight away like a spineless coward.'
No money was taken and NAB put a temporary block on Stella's accounts.
The bank's fraud operations team also told Stella her computer should be cleaned.
Consumer watchdog ACCC has issued a warning to Australians after the incident to be aware of schemes.
'A remote access scam will begin with a contact out of the blue from someone who sounds pretty professional, telling you that there's something wrong with one of your accounts,' deputy chair Catriona Lowe said.
'They are going to ask you to download software that will enable them to take control of your computer.'

The mother of Pheobe Bishop has revealed her daughter lived with a disability, and slammed local rumours she will shut down her NDIS-registered business. Pheobe, 17, went missing near Queensland's Bundaberg Airport about 8.30am on May 15 after booking a trip to WA to visit her boyfriend. Last Friday, officers discovered the teenager's remains near Goodnight Scrub National Park. The teen's housemates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with her murder, three weeks after she missed her flight and vanished. Police allege they moved her body more than once. Daily Mail Australia earlier revealed that Bromley was employed by Pheobe's mum as a support worker, until she was made redundant from her role last year. This week rumours have circulated in the Gin Gin community that Pheobe was an NDIS recipient through her mother's company. Claims also emerged that Smiley's Support Services, the business run by Pheobe's mum Kylie Johnson, was 'unregistered' with NDIS. However, NDIS records show that Smiley's has approved registration status and is in force until it's up for renewal in February 2026. Ms Johnson took to social media on Thursday to hit back at the allegations. 'We've heard a few rumours about ourselves lately, however, we'd like to assure you all that Smiley's has NO intention of closing,' she wrote, adding that the business was 'continuing as usual'. Ms Johnson implied the rumours had come from other NDIS providers in the area. 'Imagine people from your own industry using this tragedy to benefit themselves?' she wrote. 'After 23 years of working between the disability and aged care sector I'm actually pretty disappointed. 'My journey started as a carer, cleaner and worked in dementia specific units and aged care homes. I've worked and studied for the last 23 years to be professionally where I am today. 'My company was established at the same time our NDIS registration was applied for. We were approved for all levels of support that we provide.' Ms Johnson mentioned that 'our last audit in June 2024 was completed as per the NDIS Guidelines'. 'This means we had meet the significant NDIS industry standards which we did with beautiful feedback,' she added. 'This has given my staff a high level of confidence and transparency in their service delivery. 'Team Smiley's won't let the bullies and trolls WIN and even though I'm not there at the moment, this company has an amazing team that continues to go above and beyond for everyone. 'Your disability only defines you if you allow it to and Phee never let hers define her.' Ms Johnson did not specify what Pheobe's disability was. However, before she disappeared, the teen had shared a post to TikTok about bipolar disorder. 'Having a partner with bpd means... getting blocked or left over small incidents... they will say very harsh things they don't mean when having an episode,' the post said, apparently in an attempt to explain her sometimes unpredictable behaviour. Ms Johnson previously said Pheobe 'didn't fit the mainstream school model' and struggled with her education until she was enrolled at the alternative Y School in Bundaberg. Pheobe's final posts to social media suggested the troubled teen had fallen out with her mother and would not return home. She also claimed in text messages to her aunt, Caz Johnson, that her mum had told her to 'get out'. The rubbish-strewn flat where she lived with Wood and Bromley was just down the road from her mother's business. Prior to registering Smiley's Support Services in 2021, Ms Johnson ran another Queensland business called Butterfly Spiritual Healing and Massage from 2015 to 2017, ABN records show. The business offered services such as reiki healing and aura cleansing. NDIS declined to comment when asked if Pheobe was a care recipient, citing privacy reasons. Support workers are potentially subject to a range of requirements prior to employment, such as working with children checks and police checks. Pheobe's cousin Whitney Woodfield replied to Ms Johnson's post, adding: 'These rumours are utterly ridiculous. 'The things this company has done for the community is incredible 'Phee would never've been okay if they were taken down over this. Proud of you for standing your ground.' Neither Wood nor Bromley appeared in court when Pheobe's alleged murder was mentioned in Bundaberg Magistrates Court last Friday. They have not entered pleas and have now been sent to jail on remand -after previously being being in police custody for several days after they were charged. Wood is now being held at Brisbane Correctional Centre, and with Bromley in Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre.

Bombshell development after innocent dancer was killed in horrific botched gangland house fire
A home has been raided by police as they continue to hunt for the killers of an innocent dancer who fell victim to a bungled underworld house fire. Katie Tangey, 27, died while she was house-sitting at her brother's Dover Street home, in the western Melbourne suburb of Truganina, on January 16 when two people set the townhouse alight. Ms Tangey, who performed burlesque under the stage name Vivien May-Royale, was tragically left trapped inside to die while the arsonists, believed to be aged between 25 and 30, fled the scene. Police have now released footage of Arson and Explosives Squad detectives raiding a home in Dandenong on Thursday morning in a huge breakthrough. Several mobile phones were seized, which will now be forensically analysed in an effort to identity the killers. The raid followed a public appeal for information held at a police information caravan on the same street the fire took place in Truganina in April. Back in February, Victoria Police revealed it's believed the fire was likely linked to Victoria's ongoing tobacco wars, with the arson attack a targeted one but at the wrong address. Ms Tangey, who has been remembered by loved ones as a 'beautiful soul' was completely innocent and had no links with the illicit tobacco trade. CCTV of the fire showed on January 16 shortly after 2am, two people got out of a dark coloured vehicle, similar to a BMW X3 or X5, parked outside the Dover Street home. An explosion was heard and the pair fled the scene in the same vehicle. Emergency services responded to reports of the fire made by Ms Tangey as she was inside the house about 2.30am. The 27-year-old dancer and her brother's golden retriever, Sunny, died at the scene and the three-storey townhouse was completely destroyed. Her brother Ethan Tangey and his wife Brooke were just days into their honeymoon when the fire took place. CCTV captured the vehicle the killers fled the scene in travelling north on Forsyth Road in Truganina at approximately 2.12am. Detectives have confirmed they are 'absolutely determined' to provide Ms Tangey's family with 'closure and justice'. Arson and Explosives Squad's Detective Inspector Chris Murray said: 'I know Katie's family would want nothing more than to see her live out the whole life she had ahead of her, but the least we can do is make sure those responsible for this tragedy are held accountable for their actions. 'I would like to thank those who have already provided information to us via Crime Stoppers, but please, we need you to come forward with additional information. 'We know this is solvable, and we know we are getting closer. If you know absolutely anything, I cannot implore you enough to find it in yourself to do the right thing and come forward.' Ms Tangey's mother, Tracey, previously said she was 'broken' following the death of her daughter. 'It is with a heavy heart (that) I let you all know my beautiful baby girl passed away in a targeted house fire yesterday morning at 2am,' she said. 'I am completely broken and don't know how we are going to heal from this devastating news. If you could all remember our beautiful soul in your own way. 'Rest my baby bub, mum loves you more than you will ever know, you are and always will be my best friend and the love of my life. My heart will be forever broken.'

Aussie netballer's shocking indecent act inside a Hungry Jacks restaurant
A South Australian mum-of-three has avoided a conviction after pleading guilty to performing a grossly indecent act inside a Hungry Jack's restaurant in Adelaide. Kayla Parry was charged after CCTV appeared to capture her performing oral sex on her then-partner in a booth at the Seaford outlet near the kid's playground. The footage, reviewed by police, showed the man was 'exposed' and Parry's head was seen 'moving up and down,' according to prosecutors. Parry's co-offender, who is currently in prison on unrelated charges, introduced her to methamphetamine during their relationship, the court heard. She pleaded guilty to the offence, and was described by her lawyer as having gone through a temporary lapse in judgment, reported the Adelaide Advertiser. 'It was very much out of character and fuelled by the circumstances at the time,' he told the court, calling the incident a 'brief lifestyle aberration.' He argued that a conviction would have significant repercussions for Parry and her children, aged 5, 8 and 12, from different relationships. The court heard that Parry has taken steps toward rebuilding her life and that there were no children in the restaurant or playground at the time. Her lawyer said she remained drug-free since February, relocated to Port Augusta, around 310 kilometres from Adelaide, and joined a local netball team. 'She has been a premier league netballer, a very highly ranked netballer,' he said. She is also seeking employment and pursuing a Certificate IV in Mental Health Counselling. Magistrate Kylie Schulz acknowledged the severity of the offence. She noted it carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment or a $2,500 fine. 'There were people present at the Hungry Jack's. If there were not children, there was clearly the potential for there to be children. 'It's sometimes referred to as a family restaurant,' she said. However, Schulz decided not to record a conviction, placing Parry on a two-year good behaviour bond instead. 'On balance, I consider it would be disproportionate to record a conviction for this offence, given you have no prior offending and in the circumstances of an anti-social relationship,' she said. The magistrate also commended Parry's efforts to get on the right track. He said her plans for further education and her involvement in a healthcare plan presented 'good prospects of rehabilitation.'
