"War is never fair": JK CM Omar Abdullah visits Poonch, offers condolences to shelling victims
Abdullah emphasized the need for sympathy towards the affected families, stating, 'Nobody has made any demands or said anything. This has been a tragic time for them, for their families, and it is our duty as individuals more than anything else to try and sympathize with them at this time of need. War is never fair.'
He offered his condolences and sympathy to those affected, offering support from his administration.
'Look, they're all enveloped in their grief so I am here only to offer my condolences and my sympathy and the support of my administration,' Abdullah said.
Earlier on Monday, CM Abdullah on Monday visited a government hospital in Poonch to meet civilians injured in the recent cross-border shelling.
Abdullah interacted with several individuals who had sustained injuries during the heavy shelling by Pakistan over the past few days. He enquired about their health and assured them of the administration's support.
Abdullah also visited the families of civilians who lost their lives in the firing. Among them was the family of Amrik Singh, who died in the shelling incident.
He also paid a visit to the home of Amarjeet Singh, another civilian casualty of the recent hostilities.
On Saturday, India said that Pakistan violated the understanding reached between DGMOs of the two countries earlier in the day on the stoppage of firing and military action and that the Indian Army is retaliating and dealing with the border intrusions.
At a special briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called it a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier on Saturday and said that India takes 'very serious note of these violations'.
India called upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.
'For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today. The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations, and we take very, very serious note of these violations,' Misri said.
Hours after it agreed to stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea, Pakistan violated the cessation of hostilities with India's air defence intercepting Pakistani drones amid a blackout in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir).
Civilian areas in Jammu's Rajouri district suffered damage due to shelling by Pakistan. A series of explosions damaged several houses and properties across the region, triggering panic among residents. According to locals, smoke rose after loud explosions were reported in Rajouri. (ANI)

Govt approves ₹62,000 crore deal to buy 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets
In a major boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India in defence project, India on Tuesday cleared the project for buying 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The final approval for the acquisition of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighters was given by a high-level meeting today and will pave the way for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce the aircraft, defence sources told ANI. This will be the second order for the LCA Mark 1A fighters, as the government has already placed orders for 83 aircraft a few years ago for around Rs 48,000 crore. The programme will help the IAF to replace its fleet of MiG- 21s, which are finally being phased out by the government in next few weeks, they said. The indigenous fighter aircraft programme, fully backed by Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters is set to be a big boost for promoting indigenisation as well as give major business to the small and medium enterprises engaged in defence business across the country, they said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for the revival of the HAL, which has bagged orders for building all types of indigenous fighter aircraft, helicopters, along with the engines for them under his government. The Prime Minister had also undertaken a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, which was first-ever sortie by the Prime Minister of India in any combat aircraft. The plan to acquire 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was also announced first by the then Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on foreign soil in Spain when he told ANI about the mega plans to boost the indigenous fighter aircraft orders. The LCA Mark 1A plane has more advanced avionics and radars than the initial 40 LCAs being supplied to the Air Force. The indigenous content in the new LCA Mark1As is going to be more than 65 per cent. The programme has been the harbinger of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives of the nation. More importantly, it is a flag bearer of India's self-reliance in the aerospace sector. The HAL is also set to bag deals for buying over 200 LCA Mark 2s and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.

Omar Abdullah's Cryptic 'Severus Snape' Post Amid J&K Statehood Speculation Gets Internet's Attention
Last Updated: J&K CM Omar Abdullah's Harry Potter post on X got the internet talking, with many asking him the meaning behind the cryptic meme while others asked Grok to help Amid speculation over statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah set the internet ablaze by sharing a Harry Potter meme on Tuesday. Featuring the character of Potions master Severus Snape from the beloved series, the text accompanying the visuals said: 'Please I can't take anymore of this." Abdullah's post on X got the internet talking, with many asking him the meaning behind the cryptic meme while others asked the AI, Grok, to explain what it is about. 🫣 — Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) August 19, 2025 'Statehood?" one user asked while another said: 'No statehood. Sit down and enjoy the mayorship." (sic) One user asked: 'Why other CMs are not as cool as him ?". Another said: 'No statehood bt administration rules." (sic) At the time of writing this report, Abdullah did not clarify what his post was about, further fuelling speculation especially since it came shortly after at least two media outlets reported that the central government could move a Bill related to J&K's statehood in Parliament on Wednesday (August 20). On August 5, 2019, the Union government split the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir with a legislative assembly, and Ladakh without one. The government and top ministers have said J&K statehood will be restored when the time is right. The Supreme Court, too, had asked the government to restore J&K's statehood at the earliest. It had earlier upheld the Centre's August 5 decision to nullify Article 370, which gave special status to the region. The restoration of statehood and special status is an emotive issue in J&K, and several political parties and activists in the Kashmir valley have been vocal in their demand to roll back the milestone move that made international headlines and sparked protests. Last year, in an election held after a decade, the National Conference-Congress alliance came to power in J&K. Omar Abdullah of the NC has called for the early restoration of statehood. 'PAID A POLITICAL PRICE' A few days ago, in a fiery Independence Day speech, Abdullah said he was paying a political price for pinning his hopes on India's democracy and the Centre for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's rights, including statehood. He said he took a big political risk when he took a stand that J&K will get whatever it needs from democracy and that nothing can be achieved through a confrontation with the government. 'Probably, I have paid a political price for it," he said, referring to recent speculation that statehood reinstatement will be announced on Independence Day. He said though he did not have much expectations, he was led to believe that it might happen after all. 'I had no expectations but I was being constantly told that the documents are ready and now just the announcement is to be made. But the announcement never came. The ray of hope is fading, but we will not give up," he added. Click here to add News18 as your preferred news source on Google.
