Dairy exports vital for NZ economy despite butter price concerns: Dr Jacqueline Rowarth

The same might well apply to your house.
Downsizing parents have been known to assist their children into the family home while choosing somewhere less expensive for themselves.
But if an outlander said they would give you twice the money of the valuation of your home, would you then accept it in the knowledge your children would ultimately be better off?
There could be $1 million extra to spend on whatever you and they need, want or desire – a different house and a car, holiday or whatever.
This is the philosophy behind Fonterra's approach to selling products from the dairy industry.
A considerable amount of time and energy is spent marketing and positioning to achieve the best price possible for the product.
The money keeps people in employment, funds repairs, maintenance and infrastructure development, and also funds research into new products.
The bulk of the export income goes to the dairy farmers so that they, too, can employ people and create vibrant businesses, while also funding farm research through their levy contribution to industry good bodies such as DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb NZ.
The income streams give everybody more choice, including the Government through tax-take investment.
Every dairy dollar created by New Zealand cows and sold offshore generates over seven times the value in New Zealand and increases employment by over eight Full Time Equivalent positions.
The $27 billion in export dollars is $5400 for every New Zealander, which multiplied by seven is almost $40,000.
That is just for dairy.
It is a lot of packs of butter, or cheese, and certainly litres of milk.
The Government's concept of doubling the value of exports underpins its desire (and New Zealand's need) for improved health, education and infrastructure, as well as police, environment, and every other group important to New Zealand's functioning as a developed nation.

If the export income increases, New Zealanders are better off.
Despite this, there has been yet another outcry over the price of butter, with statements that it should be cheaper because New Zealand produces so much of it.
Prices come down when supply exceeds demand, or if the product is being used as a loss leader by the seller.
Vegetables and fruit tend to be cheaper in peak harvest season because supply is plentiful.
The Food Price Index shows increases during winter and drought (and in the aftermath of cyclones).
There is no glut in dairy products – they are in demand.
Loss leaders are a different issue.
They are an inducement to customers to enter a store to purchase the product at a price which might be below market cost.
The goal is to stimulate sales of other, more profitable goods or services.
The store accepts the 'loss' on the chosen product on the basis that it will make more money on sales overall, as customers are led into the shop…
Inevitably, this leads to a discussion on supermarkets and whether the current structure allows sufficient choice for New Zealand customers.
Supermarkets have borne the brunt of complaints about rising food prices (overlooking the impact of an increase in wages, power, rates and compliance costs, and the fact about 40% of food is imported).
An article published last year showed each New Zealand supermarket was generating over 40% more revenue than US supermarkets.
But each New Zealand supermarket was also serving more people.
The article suggested having more competition between supermarket companies would reduce the revenue (implication - profit - which is not necessarily the case) for each supermarket.
What was not apparent was that by serving more people, the New Zealand supermarkets were offering a service for less than that being charged in other countries.
From the data, it appeared that in the UK and Australia, the revenue per person was 40% and 23%, respectively, higher than in New Zealand.
When comparing prices here with those overseas, the role of GST, which adds 15% to the purchase price, is often overlooked.
Further, unlike farmers elsewhere, New Zealand farmers do not receive Government support (taxpayer money).
In many cases in the northern hemisphere, the support is what keeps the business solvent while ensuring domestic food security and a managed landscape.
Discussing butter prices, Gareth Kiernan, chief forecaster at Infometrics, has explained that the alternatives are subsidies (which have to be paid for with tax) or regulation.
There is a cost to both, resulting in inefficiencies.
Next time you need butter (or cheese, or milk or any food), thank a farmer for being the bedrock of the economy.

TSB Bank has reported another year of strong financial performance and strategic progress. The Bank delivered a net profit before tax of $57.6 million for the year ending 31 March 2025, up $6.7 million on the previous year. In the 2025 financial year $15m in dividends have been declared to shareholder Toi Foundation Holdings Limited (the investment management entity of philanthropic organisation Toi Foundation), an increase on the $10m declared in the prior financial year. Performance was underpinned by a $7.8 million increase in net operating income and a 1.7% reduction in operating costs. Lending and deposit growth remained strong, with commercial lending up 29% and deposits increasing by 2%. TSB also maintained strong asset quality, with non-performing loans at just 0.5%, below the industry average of 0.7%. Chair Mark Darrow says the results reflect the Bank's focus on simplifying operations to pave the way for accelerated investment in digital capability. 'TSB is now in a strong position to evolve into a digital-first bank that delivers on the expectations of modern consumers and businesses, while staying true to our customer-first values and high-quality service,' Darrow says. 'We're laying the foundations for long-term growth by investing in the right technologies, talent and tools. Our goal is to build a bank that earns trust through great service today and innovation for tomorrow - and to do so in a way that reflects our deep community roots.' Chief Executive Officer Kerry Boielle says TSB's progress is a testament to the hard mahi of our people and our ongoing commitment to delivering more for our customers and communities. 'We've made great progress this year in strengthening our systems and products, so in the year ahead, people can expect TSB to step up and offer more for everyday New Zealanders and small to medium sized businesses. Foodstuffs North Island has been granted resource consent to build a new PAK'nSAVE in Takapuna, paving the way for a major investment that will bring more access to New Zealand's lowest food prices on Auckland's North Shore. The 6,461m² store is expected to create over 200 jobs and will be located on a 9,826m² site with construction expected to be completed in 2029. The new store will offer 197 carparks and serve a growing catchment across Takapuna and the wider North Shore. Foodstuffs North Island's General Manager of Retail & Property, Lindsay Rowles said: 'We're incredibly excited about our plans to bring PAK'nSAVE to the Takapuna community. Large vacant sites in this area are rare, and this is a great opportunity to create a modern, efficient store that helps more people access New Zealand's most trusted supermarket brand and our commitment to low grocery prices.' PAK'nSAVE was ranked second overall in the 2025 Kantar Corporate Reputation Index (RepZ) and has led the Fairness pillar for nine years running, a reflection of its consistent focus on value. The site sits within a floodplain that's indicated as having a 1% chance of being flooded in any given year and includes two overland flow paths. The proposed design has been carefully developed to respond to these challenges, with the retail floor located on level one above an undercroft carpark and includes a civil engineering solution to safely manage stormwater and flood risk. 'This is a thoughtfully designed development that responds to the site's constraints, while making sure we can deliver a safe and welcoming shopping experience,' says Rowles. FMA Cancels Filcare Services Limited's Financial Advice Provider Licence

The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) - Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has cancelled Filcare Services Limited's (Filcare) Financial Advice Provider licence, at its request. Filcare held a full financial advice provider licence, providing financial advice to approximately 1,800 retail clients, many of whom were migrant workers from the Filipino community. FMA's Head of Perimeter and Response Helena Lewis said, 'Filcare's cancellation follows the termination of its distribution agreement with Fidelity Life Assurance Company Limited and AIA New Zealand Limited, and our subsequent inquiry into its affairs.' The FMA's inquiry found that Filcare's advisers had contravened its licence obligations by failing to: keep adequate records in relation to advice given to its clients, ensure its clients understood the financial advice they received, exercise care diligence and skill when providing financial advice to its clients, provide adequate disclosures relating to advice, and demonstrate that recommendations made to clients were suitable. 'In particular, we observed that clients did not receive adequate nature and scope disclosures and were therefore unable to make an informed decision about whether to seek, obtain, or act on the advice,' said Ms Lewis. 'We also found that Filcare advisers failed to demonstrate that the recommendations made to clients were suitable. As an example, for a vast majority of clients, the documentation on file lacked the requisite detail to clearly show how the selected levels of cover were determined, and that the recommendation matched the risk tolerance, financial situation, and needs and goals of the client.' In cases of replacement advice, the FMA observed minimal evidence that the advisers had considered and reviewed: the existing product to see if it continues to meet the clients' relevant circumstances, the new product recommended to the client, the potential benefits that may be lost, and any other significant consequences of the switch for the client. 'Filcare advisers failed to take reasonable steps to ensure clients understood the implications of the financial advice,' said Ms Lewis. 'In files concerning replacement advice, there was no evidence that clients were informed of the potential risks of replacing existing policies, such as losing benefits they might have otherwise received under original policies, or the likelihood of exclusions or limitations associated with changes in health, lifestyle, or occupation that have occurred since the original policy has been taken out. Clients were also not given sufficient time to understand the advice before deciding whether to follow through with it.' At the time of FMA's inquiry, Filcare engaged two financial advisers, one of which is also the sole director of Filcare. The FMA also found that Filcare failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that advisers complied with their duties. 'The FMA will continue to take action where appropriate to ensure that all New Zealanders have access to fair, transparent and efficient financial services,' concludes Ms Lewis.
