Young Scot Onley surprises with top finishes in Tour de France
The Kelso-born rider delivered standout performances as he claimed third and fourth, in stage seven and four respectively, on the wheels of defending champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).
"Mur-de-Bretagne (on stage seven) was really circled as a stage that could suit me but you also have to be realistic that Pogacar, in these kinds of finishes, is in a different league," Onley told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.
"I'm just enjoying what I'm doing and to be able to be up there with Pogacar and Vingegaard is an honour."
The Picnic PostNL rider also secured sixth place in stage two, adding to an already impressive tally of three top-10 finishes in his second appearance at cycling's most prestigious race.
"I was hoping to get a good result, but a good result was maybe a top 10, top five from the bunch. But now I've kind of shown that I'm a little bit higher up and I can set my goals a little bit higher," he said.
Onley, who won a stage at last month's Tour de Suisse and claimed third overall, has shown consistency in World Tour one-week races this year. However, his main aim remains a stage win on the Tour de France.
"I think it's still the main goal. There are going to be a lot more opportunities coming up in the next couple of weeks. I just have to take those opportunities when they come," he said.
"I didn't come here with any ambitions for the GC (general classification). If there's an opportunity to slide in the breakaway one day, then I'll try and take it."
The British rider is one minute and 18 seconds behind Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) who currently sits fifth.
"I think a top five would be something really special, but I don't know if that's really possible," he said, adding that the experience is bolstering his confidence as a potential Grand Tour contender.
"I think that's the goal in the next couple of years. And now I'm starting to realize that maybe it's a little bit more possible than I thought."
The first high mountain stage in the Pyrenees on Thursday should give some insight into Onley's strength in longer climbs.

Organised with the support of official partner Škoda and government partner Dubai Sports Council, the world-class cycling event is set to attract even more participants, while offering an expanded weekend program of activities for all of the family. The inaugural edition of L'Étape Dubai welcomed over 1,000 participants, including 243 international riders and 266 Emiratis, making it the largest first-edition amateur cycling event of its kind in the UAE. The race featured 101 km and 50 km competitive courses, a 20 km family-friendly ride and kids' races, passing key landmarks across the city. Reinforcing its status as the premier platform for amateur cyclists to experience the spirit of the Tour de France in the Middle East, the 2026 edition of L'Étape Dubai aims to build on this momentum by increasing participation to a total 2,000 cyclists across the various categories. Pre-registration opens on 27 July 2025, offering a 15% early-bird discount ahead of the official registration launch in September. In addition to the main race, the 2026 weekend program will expand its community and family engagement elements. The Saturday (24 January) will once again host the popular, non-competitive Family Ride and Kids' Races, with new initiatives and family-oriented activities led by Škoda, welcoming even greater participation of families and first-time riders. The weekend will also feature an enhanced fan village and broader race village activations, with community cycling activities being planned after the summer in the lead-up to the race. The 2026 edition of L'Étape Dubai is also set to welcome legendary former Tour de France riders to the UAE, building on the participation of three former Tour de France riders in 2025. Why the UAE's Tour de France success should come as no surprise
It may be a long way from the cycling streets of Paris to the mountains and deserts of the UAE but one thing connected them this week – Sunday's remarkable Tour de France victory of UAE Team Emirates-XRG's superstar, Tadej Pogacar. The 26-year-old Slovenian's victory ride through the French capital to celebrate his fourth Tour win was well deserved, with one team colleague hailing him as a 'once in a generation' talent. Such an achievement should not come as a surprise to anyone who has witnessed the revolution that has taken place in UAE professional cycling in recent years. And although Pogacar's undoubted abilities helped to earn him yet another accolade, Emirati cycling can also be proud of developing a sporting culture that embraces recreational riders as well as elite-level competitors. On one hand, the story of professional cycling in the Emirates is one of vision and commitment leading to world-class outcomes. In a little over a decade, cycling tours in Dubai and Abu Dhabi evolved into today's UAE Tour, which remains the only UCI WorldTour race in the Middle East. This race consistently attracts some of the best in world cycling, with competitors speeding across flat desert stretches and along city streets as well as tackling gruelling mountain climbs such as Jebel Hafeet and Jebel Jais. Such success did not spring from nowhere; significant government and corporate backing for riders, organisers and cycling infrastructure as a whole has played a major part in this sporting story. But such support for cycling does not begin and end with the highest levels of men's competition. In 2021, UAE Team ADQ became the first women's professional cycling team in the Middle East, competing with 14 teams in Women's World Tour races. Last December, it was announced that Abu Dhabi international investment entity XRG had entered a six-year partnership with UAE Team Emirates, a move that ensures Emirati cycling will remain competitive. Although many foreign-born riders have represented the UAE with distinction, home-grown talent has also made its presence felt. Last year, Safiya Al Sayegh – the country's first female professional cyclist – also become the first Emirati woman cyclist to qualify for the Olympics. Another trailblazer is Yousif Mirza who had the honour of becoming the first Emirati to compete in the road race event at the Rio Games in 2016, and last year travelled to the Paris Games as Al Sayegh's coach. Promising Emirati cyclists Abdullah Al Hammadi and Mohammad Al Mutaiwei are also ones to watch. Parallel to these achievements has been the promotion of cycling in the Emirate as a whole. In the same year that the country's first professional women's team was founded, Abu Dhabi was distinguished as a Bike City by the Union Cycliste Internationale, the Switzerland-based governing body for international competitive cycling. This recognised the emirate's commitment to the UCI's Cycling for All strategy, which aims to promote cycling as a healthy, everyday activity, as a more sustainable means of transport, and as a competitive sport for amateurs and professionals. Cyclists in the UAE – whether professional and amateur – can feel that they are also part of this story, with some among them primed to write the next chapters in this sporting tale Infrastructure projects in the capital also bear out this commitment. These include a new 109-kilometre designated cycling track called the Abu Dhabi Loop and a 3,500-seat velodrome, called the Velodrome Hudayriyat, currently being built on Hudayriyat Island. Dubai too has long embraced the bicycle; last May its Quality of Life Strategy 2033 included aims to increase the length of beach cycling tracks by 300 per cent and develop more than 115km of pedestrian and cycling tracks. Back in Paris, Pogacar's celebrations were proof that winning a Tour de Frances takes something extra special. But cyclists in the UAE – whether professional and amateur – can feel that they are also part of this tale with some among them primed to write the next chapters in this sporting story.

PIF's sports investment firm Surj backs triathlete group PTO's funding
Saudi Arabia's Surj Sports Investment has participated in the Series C funding of Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) PTO founding investor Michael Moritz, Cordillera Investment Partners and Verance Capital also participated in the funding, which raised approximately $40 million, according to Bloomberg. Earlier this month, Sky News reported Surj was in advanced talks to inject $20 million into PTO. Saudi Arabia's $1.15 trillion wealth fund, PIF, set up Surj Sports Investment in 2023 to develop a sports sector via strategic investments. The Saudi investment is expected to fuel the expansion of the athlete-owned entity into the kingdom and the wider region, while also positioning it as a likely future host market for PTO's flagship T100 Triathlon World Tour championship race, according to a statement.
