Delhi Capitals co-owner says they are 'capable' of running Rugby league
Rugby Premier League is coming soon. It will start from June 15 to 29 at Mumbai Football Arena. Six franchises will participate. Satyam Trivedi says the league has great potential. The format is Rugby 7s with tweaked rules for TV audience. International marquee players will earn USD 15,000. Indian players will earn between Rs 50,000 to Rs 550,000. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Rugby might rank low in the popularity charts of India's sporting landscape but it has tremendous potential to garner eyeballs with the upcoming Rugby Premier League (RPL), feels GMR Sports CEO and the event's promoter Satyam Trivedi The inaugural RPL will be held from June 15 to 29 at the Mumbai Football Arena in Andheri featuring six franchises Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Kalinga Black Tigers, Chennai Bulls, Mumbai Dreamers and Bengaluru who has considerable experience of running multiple IPL franchises, including the GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals, told PTI about the rationale behind the group becoming a driving force in organising the inaugural edition of Rugby Premier League."We thought that we've been managing this business for a very long time. And I think of the scale of managing an IPL team, you can imagine is one of the largest properties, and we've developed capabilities internally," Trivedi said."So idea was that, why don't we leverage our experience, our expertise, and move up the value chain and look at opportunities outside franchise. So when this opportunity came, obviously it started with a franchise conversation."But we just took one day to go back and say that not at a franchise level, but we want to invest at a League level," he recalled when asked about how it all format will be Rugby 7s, which is recognised as an Olympic traditional Rugby Union format where there are two halves of 40 minutes each with 15 players per side, the 7s is a format where there are seven players on field with two halves of 7 in RPL, keeping the TV audience in mind, it has been tweaked to four quarters of four minutes each with two-minute break between underlined why he thought the league can work in the long run."It's a shorter format and we think it works very well. Because if you look at the consumer want to look at shorter format. The attention span has drastically gone down."We had to keep that in mind. So we think that this is a great on-ground as well as television product. That's one reason to hold the league," he reasoned."Secondly, Rugby India is a great Federation to work with. They are very committed. (Actor) Rahul Bose, who is the president of Rugby India, is also very committed towards the development of sport. Today, there are 250 districts in India where rugby is played," he also gave a peek into the kind of money marquee players will be getting for the two-week tourney."International marquee player coming here for two weeks and one week of camp or maybe 10 days of camp, they would get about USD 15,000. The bridge players (from Tier-2 Rugby Nations) will be getting around USD 5000."The Indian players will be paid between Rs 50,000 to Rs 550,000."The salary cap was kept at Rs 70 lakh per team," he informed.

IPL On Collision Course With Pakistan Super League In 2026: Details Inside
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) next year is set to clash with the high-profile Indian Premier League as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is mulling to hold the event in the same window as the IPL. The reason being given is that with the ICC World T20 Cup scheduled in February-March next year and some FTP (Future Tours Programme) commitments, it might not be possible again to hold the PSL in its normal window of February-March. "There is a window available to the Pakistan board in December and first half of January but it has already given NOCs to Pakistani players to play in the Big Bash in Australia in this period and has also planned some domestic activities. "So the discussion now with the franchise owners is to prepare for the PSL to be held in April-May just like this year," a source said. An official in the PSL secretariat said that when the PSL was held this year and overlapped with the IPL due to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February-March, there was no effect on the viewership or interest which the PSL normally gets every year. "Initially there was some concern that having the PSL in the same window as the IPL might hit our league but surprisingly viewership figures on TV and other media improved and the franchise owners got a chance to sign on some notable overseas players who were not picked in the IPL auction," he added. With 10 editions now completed, the valuation of the existing six franchise teams will also be carried out before the next PSL and the PCB is thinking about a 25 per cent increase in franchise fees. All the franchise owners except Multan Sultans' owner Ali Tareen, teams have confirmed in writing their intent to retain ownership for the next 10-years but Tareen who pays the highest franchise fee wants a review of all franchise fees as he has concerns over financial losses. The next edition of the event is also significant since the PSL secretariat is also set to invite bids for two more new teams, the work for which has already started. Apparently the PCB also wants that the 10-year title sponsorship agreement also needs to be reviewed and renewed and a new deal for live streaming will also be required. Currently, PCB earns about 900 million rupees annually from the title sponsorship. Last year, live streaming rights for Pakistan were sold for approximately 1.8 billion. Local broadcast rights generated around 6.3 billion, while international rights brought in USD 4.6 million. Ground rights were sold for around PKR 2 billion for two years. For TV production, PCB signed a two-year deal worth USD 2.25 million annually. Tenders will be issued for all these agreements, followed by lengthy processes.

DK Shivakumar Breaks Silence On Buying RCB Rumours: "Don't Even Drink..."
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has quashed rumours of him buying the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). His remark comes days after reports surfaced that RCB owners, United Spirits -- the Indian arm of UK-based Diageo Plc -- was looking to sell stakes in the franchise. However, United Spirits issued a clarification denying any such reports. "This has reference to your email communication dated 10th June 2025 seeking clarification from the Company on media reports in relation to potential stake sale of RCB. The Company would like to clarify that aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussions," United Spirits told the Bombay Stock Exchange and BSE Surveillance Department. Now, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has played down the rumours of him buying RCB. "I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," Shivakumar said in a video posted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Delhi | "I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," says Karnataka Deputy CM... — ANI (@ANI) June 11, 2025 Following RCB's maiden IPL title win, thousands of jubilant fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, where the official celebrations were held. However, the event took a devastating turn as the overcrowded venue led to chaos when fans attempted to forcefully enter the stadium, resulting in a deadly stampede. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Lalit Modi expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and labelled the incident as a case of gross mismanagement. "First and foremost, my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. This should never have happened. The entire event was poorly planned and executed," Modi said. "There is so much mudslinging and finger-pointing going on, but the issue is simple - the event should never have been allowed without proper arrangements in place. The authorities failed, and the team management should also have ensured fan safety before participating in the so-called celebrations."
