Delhi police commissioner Sanjay Arora retires, reflects on career and service
'Only after I left police training and joined a police station did I learn how to prevent crimes on streets, catch criminals, handle court proceedings, fight for police rights, manage the police force, and deal with criminals with sensitivity, etc.,' Arora said.
The Delhi government's home department announced Arora's retirement on July 31, citing his attainment of the age of superannuation.
Arora, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has served in key positions in Tamil Nadu Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Services Selection Board (SSB), and other branches of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
Speaking about his three-year tenure at Delhi Police, he said, 'Delhi Police is an excellent force. During G20, you showed how strong and capable you are. Whichever elections came... you showed how you were able to maintain peace while being calm, patient, and organised. You diligently followed Election Commission rules.'
'I was able to serve at key agencies such as ITBP, BSF, SSB, CRPF, etc. As I'm retiring, I think of those experiences. With friends there, I worked in thick jungles, icy mountains, and tried to understand issues there and work for national security and against anti-national elements. Some of my friends also sacrificed their lives,' he added and paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in police encounters and on duty.

Yashobhoomi convention centre in Delhi's Dwarka wins International Architecture Award 2024

(HT Archive) The Yashobhoomi Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, has won the International Architecture Award 2024 under the 'Civic Centre' category, which will be presented next month at the historic Acropolis in Athens, Greece, a globally recognised landmark in architecture. The prize is awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dikshu C Kukreja, managing principal of CP Kukreja Architects, which designed the centre, said: 'Yashobhoomi embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a leading global hub.' Designed in collaboration with IDOM (Spain), Yashobhoomi spans 225 acres and has a built-up area of 2.2 million square feet. It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The venue, built at a cost of ₹5,400 crore, features multiple exhibition halls, auditoriums and conference rooms to host trade and diplomatic events. Kukreja said the Union ministry of commerce selected them for the global competition. The firm is renowned for designing the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Ambadeep Towers in Delhi. It was recently internationally recognised for designing the Madhya Pradesh state secretariat and Gautam Buddha University. Recalling that the project's conceptualisation involved close collaboration with retired IAS officer Amitabh Kant, who was also the G20 Sherpa, to ensure the facility could host high-profile gatherings, such as the G20 Summit. After the award was announced, Kant thanked the Prime Minister on the social media platform X, 'for the vision and opportunity to conceptualise and drive it as Secretary DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion)'. What sets Yashobhoomi apart, Kukreja said, is its fusion of modern technology with traditional Indian identity. 'It's easy to copy global examples from Germany, Korea, or the US; but for me, it was essential to root the design in India's ethos—through stepwell-inspired forms, jali screens, aangan-like light courts, and interiors steeped in Indian art and motifs.' He said the exhibition hall spans an area equivalent to four football fields. The venue features a 100-metre column-free span and the world's largest LED facade. 'The venue is also India's first to incorporate retractable seating that can transform a 6,000-seater hall into a flat-floored multi-purpose space at the touch of a button,' he said. Large venues like this often turn into 'white elephants' due to a lack of versatility. 'So, we ensured that the hall can have multiple uses,' he said. Kukreja said sustainability was a core design priority, and this secured the Indian Green Building Council's platinum rating. 'Steel was chosen to minimise localised pollution. This ensured durability and lower carbon impact, while featuring recycled materials, locally sourced granite and marble, and off-site fabricated glass-reinforced concrete,' he said. Kukreja said the award was more than personal recognition. 'This is about India creating architecture the world talks about and respects.'

IPS officer Ajay Sahni to get his third President's Medal
Lucknow: Senior IPS officer Ajay Kumar Sahni, who led 52 encounters, was on Wednesday named for the President's Medal for Gallantry this year. This is the third President's Medal of his career. He was picked for the award for showing 'exceptional courage' during a high-risk armed operation in Meerut on Republic Day (Jan 26, 2020). The President's Medal citation describes the 2020 Meerut operation as "a do-or-die situation in open combat." It praises Sahni's "rarest among rare" gallantry, leadership, and dedication under direct threat to life. In 2020, Sahni, as SSP Meerut, received information about two armed robbers on a motorcycle committing multiple robberies in Transport Nagar police station limits. When intercepted, the criminals opened fire at police and sped towards the Meerut–Delhi Bypass (NH-58).Sahni, along with the Crime Branch's surveillance team, moved to cut off their escape. The suspects, when cornered, opened fire, injuring station officer Dinesh Kumar and head constable Manoj Kumar. While a bullet nearly struck his chest, Sahni led the counterattack. In the ensuing gunfight, Chand alias Kale, a notorious gangster with a Rs 1 lakh bounty and over 40 cases, was killed. The two cops who were injured were also awarded gallantry medals. In Feb 2020, he led the encounter in Meerut in which Shiv Shakti Naidu — the kingpin of Delhi's notorious Naidu gang, involved in an Rs 8 crore heist and carrying a Rs 1 lakh reward — was fatally wounded. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Naidu was wanted in over a dozen cases in Delhi alone and faced multiple cases across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. In 2021, he was awarded a gallantry medal for this encounter. In 2020, Sahni was awarded for eliminating Sujit Singh alias Budhwa, leader of the D-9 gang and a Rs 50,000 bounty criminal who escaped from Rampur Jail and was hiding in Azamgarh. Sahni is credited with dismantling the entire D-9 gang, one of eastern Uttar Pradesh's most feared criminal syndicates. During his 2016 posting in Siddharthnagar, police, under his leadership, apprehended several members of the infamous Bawaria gang after a fierce gunfight in which a bullet struck his jacket.
