78-year-old royal wedding cake sold to fan with unusual plan

Perth Now09-07-2025
A slice of cake from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's 1947 wedding has sold in auction for $5,600 – and the buyer has told media outlets he plans to eat it.
Gerry Layton, 64, was the winning bidder in auction house Reeman Danise's sale of the rare regal artefact late last week.
The 78-year-old slice of alcohol-laced fruit cake was one of 2,000 from the late royals' Buckingham Palace wedding reception, with the auction house noting that it is one of the last pieces of the cake in existence.
'The slice is extremely rare and is probably the very last piece of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding cake in existence,' buyer Gerry Layton told newspaper The Telegraph about his purchase.
'It is in good condition having been wrapped and kept in its box for almost 80 years.' Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip had their wedding on November 20 1947. Credit: Supplied
Despite the age of the dessert, Layton says he still fully intends on tucking into the aged fruitcake on his 65th birthday next year — which he hopes to throw on the late queen's former yacht Britannia.
'I hope to have a replica state banquet there at my cost, where I will cut a third of (the slice) off and flambe in rum so that any bacteria will be killed off,' he said. Gerry Layton was the winning bidder in the auction for the cake. Credit: Supplied
'But if anything happens to me then at least I will be going out in style on Britannia.'
The lavish wedding cake stood at 9ft tall and consisted of four tiers. The four tier wedding cake weighed 225kg and its ingredients were flown in from around the globe. Credit: Supplied
Layton's slice is four inches by three inches and was originally gifted to Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes of the Royal Navy, who opted to pass down the slice in its original embossed packaging to his son.
This is not the first time Layton has made headlines for purchasing a slice of an old royal wedding cake at auction — the royalist also managed to acquire a slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 40-year-old wedding cake in 2021.

Alice Cooper believes Johnny Depp's problems are 'easily fixed'

Alice Cooper is convinced Johnny Depp can fix his "problems" by marrying a woman closer to his own age and reading the Bible. The rock legend has played alongside Depp in their band Hollywood Vampires since 2012, but the 62-year-old actor has been busy dealing with a number of personal issues including long-running legal battles over his relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard, 39. Alice is convinced his friend is now "doing well" but could do with some sage advice for the future. Alice, 77, told The Times newspaper: "I thought if he loses that [second lawsuit] suit, he could go down a rabbit hole and not come back. "But I think he's doing well now and I'm hoping he's gonna come and play with us at our London show. But Johnny's problems are easily fixed. "I keep telling him: quit marrying girls and marry a woman ... "I've read it [the Bible] 14 or 15 times. He'd do well to do the same amount. At least!" The Pirates of the Caribbean actor split from Heard in 2016 and his career went into freefall when she later wrote an op-ed about being a victim of domestic abuse, which led to a lengthy court battle after he sued her for defamation. He won the case and is now getting back to work in the movie business, and he recently insisted he's not holding a grudge. Depp previously told The Telegraph: "This sounds like horses*** but one can simply hold hate [until it] inspires some species of malice in your skull. "Makes you think of revenge. But hating someone is a great big responsibility to hang on to. "The real truth of it, that I won't allow, is that in order for me to hate, I have to care first. And I don't care. What should I care about? That I got done wrong to [by others]? Plenty of people get done wrong." When asked why he took his grievances to court, Depp insisted he didn't want "a lie" to do be the "deciding factor of whether or not I have the capability of making movies in Hollywood." Depp went on to insist he's learned a lot from the last few years and is determined to move on with his life. He added: "Going through all that in real time amounted to seven or eight years. "It was a harsh, painful internal journey. Would I rather not have gone through something like that? Absolutely. But I learnt far more than I ever dreamed I could.'

Danny Dyer pulled out his BAFTA during wedding speech

Danny Dyer pulled out his BAFTA award during his speech at his daughter Dani Dyer's wedding. The Human Traffic star has admitted he was thrilled to win a prize for his role in TV comedy Mr. Bigstuff earlier this year and he even took the trophy to his daughter's wedding in May and used it as part of his toast at the reception after Dany tied the knot with West Ham footballer Jarrod Bowen. Danny told The Telegraph newspaper: "The first six months have been incredibly emotional ... I won the Bafta. I didn't think I would win it. It's the first time I've been acknowledged really, so to actually win it, and win it for a comedy performance, for Mr Bigstuff, which is me going into territory I'm not known for, I was just so happy. "And then, of course, my daughter getting married to the man of my dreams. It doesn't happen often. I'm sure there's many men who give away their daughters to a********. "You can't choose who your kid falls in love with, but I think for the first time in history I'm more in love with him than she is." Danny went on to reveal he used the award during his father-of-the bride speech, adding: "I wanted to keep it [the speech] light. "So I said: 'Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, today's not about me, it's about this wonderful couple.' "Then I go under the table and bring out my BAFTA. I thought: 'Oh my God, is this narcissistic?' But the cheer it got … "I needed to make people laugh, so that's what I did." He went on to reveal he then used his speech to get guests to sing an updated version of a West Ham football chant, adding: "The speech was written for me really because I alluded to me being more in love with him than her. "Then I got us all to stand up and sing 'Bowen's on fire and he's married Dani Dyer'." Danny previously opened up about his daughter's big day during an appearance on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, saying: "I was in pieces. The best day of my life, it was unbelievable, honestly it was just so beautiful. "I managed to give my daughter away to the man of my dreams. I don't think that's ever happened in the history of any father giving away their daughter. It was the perfect day, it was just beautiful."

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle ‘frustrated' after secret peace meeting with King Charles aide is leaked

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are believed to be 'frustrated' after the details of a secret meeting with senior aides for Charles and Prince Harry were leaked. Last Wednesday, in the first steps to 'rapprochement', the King's communications secretary Tobyn Andrae was spotted meeting with Harry and Markle's media advisors, Meredith Maines and Liam Maguire. The trio met at the Royal Over-Seas League near Clarence House, a private club where the King is patron. It is not known which side first extended the invitation to meet. Both Harry and the King are believed to be open to resolving their rift, which began in 2020 when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from senior royal duties and fled to the United States. The publication of Prince Harry's controversial memoir Spare and the couple's infamous Oprah interview further drove a wedge between the father and son. However, according to a source, Harry and Meghan weren't thrilled to find out the details of the unexpected rendezvous and a potential reconciliation were splashed across newspapers. The meeting, which was organised in a bid to start afresh, could now all be unravelled if there is an inkling of distrust from either side, The Telegraph reports. Sources close to Harry insisted that the Sussexes were not behind the leak. 'There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years,' a source told The Daily Mail. 'There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about.' The source said the summit was just a 'first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction. 'Everyone just wants to move on and move forward now. It was finally the right time for the two sides to talk.' Ms Maines was the mastermind behind the launch of Meghan Markle's Netflix show With Love, Meghan and her lifestyle brand As Ever. She also organised Harry's bombshell BBC interview in May where the Prince expressed his desire to reconcile hours after losing a court fight over security arrangements. 'I would love reconciliation with my family,' Harry said. 'Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has. 'He won't speak to me because of this security stuff but it would be nice to reconcile.'
