SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Costa Rican police seized five capybaras, crack cocaine and marijuana after chasing down a fleeing vehicle on a highway along the Central American country's Pacific coast on Thursday.

The large rodents are a semi-aquatic South American relative of the guinea pig and happen to be having a moment on social platforms. But they are not native to Costa Rica, and the Public Security Ministry said Thursday that possessing, transporting or trafficking them is illegal. The agency said it had never recorded another seizure of the animals.

Two men in the vehicle, who both had criminal records, were arrested.

'The police action was important and shows the concurrence where the drug world coincides with the introduction of non-native species,' Security Minister Mario Zamora said.

At around 10:20 a.m., police said they recognized a man they knew was wanted leaving a taxi near Paisley Road and Imperial Road South. Police arrested the man and said they found quantities of methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine, cash, a can of bear spray and a machete inside his pant leg upon searching him. A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and seven counts of breaching court orders.

18-year-old arrested after multiple attempted break-ins in Kitchener
Waterloo Regional Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection to multiple attempted break-ins in Kitchener on Monday. Police said at around 8:50 p.m., a man went to four different residences on Wren Place and tried to break into each home. The man was unable to. The homeowners confronted the man who then assaulted three people before running away. Police came to the area about five minutes later, where they found the man outside one of the homes and arrested him. An 18-year-old man was charged with four counts of break and enter and three counts of assault.

North Bay police respond to emergency at a hotel, find guns and drugs
North Bay police seized a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun, containing nine rounds within the magazine. Two men and a woman have been charged after police in North Bay responded to an emergency at a local hotel room May 21. Police were alerted to 'a drug-induced medical emergency' around 11:30 a.m. 9mm ammunition Police found 90 rounds of 9mm ammunition. (North Bay police photo) 'Upon arrival, police observed a loaded handgun and several 9 mm rounds in plain view in the hotel room,' police said in a news release Wednesday. 'The accused parties were taken into custody and a subsequent search revealed more ammunition and some (cash.)' After obtaining a search warrant, police seized a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun, containing nine rounds within the magazine and another 90 rounds of ammunition. Drugs seized include 27.7 grams of crack cocaine and 1.6 grams of cocaine. Other items include two weighing scales, baking soda, cooking elements, Ziplock bags and multiple measuring devices. In addition to $425 in cash, police found a Rolex watch worth approximately $14,500. The value of the street drugs is approximately $2,930, police said. Two men, ages 42 and 18, and a 40-year-old woman, all from North Bay, were charged with several offences, mainly drug and weapons charges. All three accused were held in custody for a bail hearing.
