
Garmin 970 and HRM600 review: Is this the best running watch and heart-rate monitor combo?
This is the top of Garmin's Forerunner range. The screen and its titanium bezel are elegant and eye-catching. At a recent running event, others crowded around me, cooing at the 970. It has Garmin's brightest AMOLED screen yet, which pops and fizzes with colour.
Pair the 970 with Garmin's new, highly advanced HRM 600 chest strap, and you get a staggering amount of running and sports data. From your vertical oscillation to your running economy (a brand new feature, which covers perhaps the most important metric for marathon-running), to umpteen other data points down to the hyper-granular, it is a dream come true for the data-obsessive runner. All this information is helpfully packaged up to give you things to work with, rather than just numbers to boggle at.
That said, is there a limit to how much data you can usefully absorb? For example, the watch and HRM strap can tell you about your Step-Speed Loss (a feature new to Garmin with this pair). If your score is not great, it gives you advice. In this case, that's run 'lightly and smoothly'. That's good advice, but did I need to know my Step-Speed Loss to find that out? Or is there a risk that your watch floods you with data that obscures the basic principles of running training (the link between mileage and speed, doing different kinds of sessions, and so on)? The counter-argument is that the watch need not obscure those lessons; it just gives you more information. And there's something undeniably fun and gamified about this data and the way it's presented.
If you're paying well over £600 for a sports watch, though, you want all the bells and whistles. That's what the 970 delivers. It can take and make calls thanks to its microphone and speaker, it can pay for things through Garmin Pay, and it has an incredibly handy flashlight (genuinely much more useful — and frequently used — than you would guess at first). It tracks and scores your sleep, it measures your training readiness, and it computes your running tolerance (a very useful feature: this tells you how far you can run over a total of seven days without pushing yourself beyond your limits). It can even run an ECG on you, though this is presented with a forest of disclaimers, pointing out you should go to your doctor if you're concerned. The battery life drew some concern when announced — up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, down from up to 23 days in the Forerunner 965 — but in my testing, I didn't find it a problem. That might be because my previous experience was with a sports watch that needed charging every other day, but bluntly, it just wasn't an issue.
What this watch — and Garmin — really is aiming at is to give you the most personalised experience possible. All those features and data points make that more feasible than ever. It's packaged up elegantly, too. Each morning and night, you receive reports about the day ahead or the day you've had (not a new feature of the 970, but as ever with this watch, beautifully presented).
Every tracking metric is used to inform suggestions for the watch about what's possible for you personally in terms of running or exercising. On top of this, the 970's key differentiating factor with other Forerunner watches is its maps (this is true for all Forerunners in the 9xx range). These are accurate and come in full colour. They make hitting the trails or navigating a new city as easy as can be.

Garmin lifts 2025 results forecast on strong product lineup
July 30 (Reuters) - Garmin raised its annual results forecast on Wednesday, banking on strong demand for its GPS-enabled fitness devices and smartwatches. Shares of the company jumped about 5.5% in premarket trading. The fitness device maker is benefiting from a strong product lineup, including flagship smartwatches and a range of cycling and indoor training equipment. The raised forecast marks a recovery from the previous quarter when the Swiss company, which has manufacturing operations in Taiwan, the Netherlands, Poland, China and the U.S., missed profit estimates amid tariff-led uncertainty. Garmin's high-end wearables cater to professional and niche markets, including defense and sports. The company now expects full-year revenue of about $7.1 billion, compared with $6.80 billion earlier. Garmin, which competes with Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab and Samsung ( opens new tab in the wearables market, posted second-quarter revenue of $1.81 billion, beating analysts' average estimate of $1.70 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Revenue from its auto original equipment manufacturer segment rose 16% to $170.1 million from a year ago. The company posted quarterly per share profit of $2.17 on an adjusted basis, beating estimates of $1.89.

And if you wanted one with an AMOLED screen, Bluetooth calling, military strength testing and a battery that can last for weeks, you know it's going to cost a pretty penny. But is it? A new watch has just been launched by Mibro, a Chinese tech firm, which packs in some seriously impressive features and you can currently buy it for £186. It's the Mibro GS Explorer S, and its features start with the impressive 1500-nit HBD AMOLED display. It's really bright, which is exactly what you need on an outdoor adventure. It's also seriously tough. Mibro put its new flagship watch through 17 military standard tests, which means it can cope with extremes of weather, bashings from rock faces and, obviously, submersion. There's also dual-frequency five-satellite GNSS for location tracking and a 10-axis motion sensing system, which means it's always tracking your precise movements. It feels great on the wrist, with a chunky bezel, but not too much weight | Mibro And then there's the water resistance. Another of the GS Explorer's stand-out features is its free-diving mode. And its water resistance rating is 10ATM, which can withstand depths of up to 100 metres. And, you have to remember, this is a phone with chunky buttons you can operate with gloves on, and Bluetooth calling. Yes, the Bluetooth calling system actually works underwater. The free-diving mode is one of several customisable setups you can flick over to, and it gives you depth and time warnings, current depth indication, and other tailored data. But there are plenty of other modes for other extreme sports, all wrapped up in an intuitive interface called Galaxy OS 2.0. It's eerily similar to Huawei's operating system, as is the companion app. And that's no bad thing. It feels light on the wrist, but incredibly robust. There are absolutely no build-quality qualms here. There's even a premium titanium version, which takes this to the next level. Battery life is also a strength, with claims of up to 60 days in a restrictive mode, 20 days in a daily mode, and around 15 hours with all the sensors on. I found that's all pretty realistic while using the watch out and about. The Bluetooth calling function even works underwater | Mibro The body trackers, which include heart rate and blood-oxygen monitoring, do take their toll when you use the most accurate settings, but it's possible, with a little careful management, to keep the watch going for over a week in normal use, and that's superb. I did experience a few glitches with the tracking and, comparing it with other watches I have at my disposal, some of the data was a little off. But I've always found they need time to settle in. That said, the overall feel was that the Mibro interface needed some finessing, which can doubtless be done through firmware updates, because it occasionally missed the fact I'd gone out on a bike ride, for example, and I missed a few notifications from time to time. Overall though, it's a seriously impressive piece of kit, especially considering it costs less than £200 at the moment. I'd also go as far as to say it's more attractive than the rivals from Garmin and Suunto, and it feels more robust than most of them. I've always been a fan of Chinese smartwatches and, while there are a lot of rubbish examples out there to sift through, every now and again you'll find a gold nugget. And the Mibro GS Explorer S is one of them.
