Tommy Gainey, known for wearing golf gloves on both hands, celebrated his 50th birthday on Aug. 13, just 48 hours before he teed it up in his first senior event. And so far, so good, as Gainey shot 6-under 64 at the 2025 Rogers Charity Classic.
Gainey was tied for the clubhouse lead with Shane Bertsch at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club in Calgary before Steve Alker also shot 63. Charles Schwab Cup points leader Miguel Angel Jimenez later matched Alker's 63. Still, Gainey will start his second round Saturday just a single stroke off the pace.

Gainey played in four PGA Tour tournaments this year, all opposite-field events, and posted finishes of T75, T53, T61 and MC. In his PGA Tour career, he has one career win, the 2012 McGladrey Classic, and three Korn Ferry Tour wins, two coming in 2010 and the third in 2020.
Gainey played in only five PGA Tour events in 2024 and was among those who had to go to PGA Tour Q-School last winter but he came up short of a fully-exempt card for 2025. He only made $21,000 in 2024 after missing five of six cuts. His last full season was 2023, where he missed 11 of 16 cuts.
But now he's starting a new journey on the Champions circuit and so far, so good.
