Ex-Knicks associate coach Johnnie Bryant a finalist for Suns job
The Suns' coaching search is down to a pair of Cavs.
Former Knicks associate coach Johnnie Bryant is a finalist for Phoenix's head coaching job, and Cleveland's associate head coach is joined by Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott, ESPN insider Chams Charania reported Monday.
Bryant spent four seasons in New York from the 2020-21 season through the 2023-24 season. He spent the first six seasons of his coaching career as an assistant with the Jazz.

Now, he'll meet with Suns owner Mat Ishbia, CEO Josh Bartelstein and general manager Brian Gregory in Michigan with a hiring potentially coming as soon as this week.
Bryant just concluded his 11th season in the NBA coaching ranks, helping the Cavs to an Eastern Conference-best record of 64-18. They ranked first in offensive efficiency and eighth in defensive efficiency this year with Bryant, 39, and head coach Kenny Atkinson running the show.

Despite the massive expectations, Cleveland surprisingly fell in the semifinals to the Pacers in six games.
Both Bryant and Ott arrived in Cleveland in the summer of 2024 as two of Coach of the Year Atkinson's first hires.

Since the Suns fired Mike Budenholzer in April and hired Gregory as the new GM in May, the franchise has been on a hunt for their next head coach — their fourth new coach in the last seven years after finishing with a 36-46 record this season.

Gregory has led the process, starting with over 15 interviews before moving on to six second-round conversations with Bryant, Ott, Miami's Chris Quinn, Dallas' Sean Sweeney, Oklahoma City's Dave Bliss and current staff member and former Knicks head coach David Fizdale.
The process moved into in-person visits last week.

The hiring process does not have to be rushed for the Suns, as they are the prime head coaching vacancy this offseason.

Josh Hart Had Four Words For Tom Thibodeau After Knicks Firing
Josh Hart Had Four Words For Tom Thibodeau After Knicks Firing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000, Josh Hart and the New York Knicks couldn't get it done, falling to Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers in six games. Advertisement Tom Thibodeau has led the Knicks to four playoff appearances since taking over in 2020. However, after his deepest postseason run with the team, he was relieved of his coaching duties on Tuesday and will now be heading elsewhere, per ESPN's Shams Charania. "BREAKING: The New York Knicks are relieving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach, sources tell ESPN. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first East Finals in 25 years, made playoffs in 4 of 5 years and led Knicks to consecutive 50+ win seasons for first time since the 1990s." New York Knicks guard Josh Hart and coach Tom ThibodeauJim Dedmon-Imagn Images Hart has played under Thibodeau since being traded to the Knicks from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2023. During their three seasons together, New York advanced past the first round each time. Advertisement Following Thibodeau's firing, Hart had a message for his now former coach, thanking him for their time together. "Forever Grateful 🧡💙 Thank You!" Hart tweeted. Thibodeau has been one of the more successful coaches since joining New York. Through 400 games coached, he secured 226 wins, the fourth-most by a coach in the last five seasons. Even with the success, some fans didn't like Thibodeau's substitution strategy, leaving his five starters on the court for over 35 minutes per game in both the regular season and playoffs. In 2024-25, Hart played a career-high 37.6 minutes per game, averaging 13.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists. Advertisement Barring a major trade, the Knicks have their top six players under contract for next season and could opt to run it back. But the search for New York's 32nd head coach is now underway. Shaquille O'Neal Makes Clear Choice Between LeBron James and Kobe Bryant
Shaquille O'Neal Makes Clear Choice Between LeBron James and Kobe Bryant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, Shaquille O'Neal's time with "Inside the NBA" on TNT came to a close. Advertisement But despite the TNT farewell, it's not the end for the crew. O'Neal, Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith will continue the show on ESPN during the 2025–26 NBA season. Before he was an analyst, Shaq was dominating the NBA, winning four championships during his 19-year career. He even played with some of the all-time greats, such as Kobe Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Many have claimed that the greatest NBA player of all time debate is between LeBron and Michael Jordan. But O'Neal seems to think otherwise. Sports analyst Shaquille O'Neal looks on during a Butler II-Imagn Images In an interview with Netflix Sports, O'Neal was asked to name the top ten players in NBA history. Surprisingly, he had LeBron listed at No. 3. Advertisement "Number three, I'm going to go with the King, LeBron James," O'Neal said. O'Neal proceeded to list his other former teammate ahead of LeBron. "Number two, I'm going with, rest in peace, Kobe 'Bean' Bryant," O'Neal added. O'Neal played alongside Bryant on the Lakers from 1996 to 2004, helping lead the team to the NBA's most recent three-peat. During that run, O'Neal earned three consecutive Finals MVP awards. He played with LeBron for one season (2009-10). While LeBron holds many of the NBA's records, Bryant won more championships, with five to LeBron's four. However, the current Lakers star surpasses Bryant in MVP awards, holding four compared to Bryant's one. Advertisement O'Neal finished his top ten list putting Jordan at the No. 1 spot. He also included other legends such as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. O'Neal notably left off Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
