Gossiping boss called North Wales GP surgery manager an 'old knacker'

North Wales Live5 hours ago

The former manager of a North Wales GP surgery has won compensation of more than £142,000 after one of her bosses branded her an "old knacker" and said her daughter was a "fat p***k".
Dr George Williams – a female GP who is one of the two partners at Gardden Road surgery in Rhosllanerchrugog, Wrexham - described then-practice manager Catherine Clark, 62, and her family as "the Clarkashians" in reference to the Kardashians, an American family of celebrities known for their reality TV show, an employment tribunal heard.
The judge found Dr Williams and others at the practice "looked down" on Ms Clark as a "source of entertainment and gossip", reports WalesOnline.
Dr Williams gossiped about the manager's "Clarkashian" lifestyle and felt she was "incompetent and too old for her job". At one point the GP wrote to her then-boyfriend: "Now trying to dislodge the old knacker but like any decent tumour she has a long root!" Employment judge Rachel Harfield said this was harassment related to age and that it was "a reference to an old horse that needed to be put down in that the claimant should no longer work there".
When Ms Clark found out such messages had been sent behind her back she was "heartbroken". She had believed Dr Williams was "a very loved and trusted friend" and had confided in her about experiencing anxiety and depression.
Ms Clark was prescribed diazepam for those issues but would later learn she had been labelled a "drug-seeker" in WhatsApp messages between surgery colleagues.
Dr Williams had also written messages describing Ms Clark's daughter as a "fat p***k" and another family member as "10 pints". The judge said there was no "reasonable and proper cause" for such language.
In one conversation she wrote a message about Ms Clark's daughter and another family member getting a Covid test starting with the words: "Clarkashian update."
After breaking up with Dr Williams in acrimonious circumstances the GP's ex-boyfriend contacted Ms Clark in December 2021 and informed her what had been said behind her back. He described his ex as having an "obsession" with Ms Clark and her family.
Ms Clark said she cried for days after learning about the messages and said she felt devastated. She made complaints about her treatment but felt these had been poorly handled by Gardden Road surgery so she resigned and sued the practice.
The judge found that Dr Williams and other staff engaged in "unkind" gossip about Ms Clark including about her prescription medications.
Dr Williams claimed the "old knacker" comment was not intended to be derogatory, telling the court she referred to her own mum as "old dear" in an affectionate way.
But Judge Harfield said: "We wholly reject that argument – it is a different term and a different phrase said in a wholly different context."
The judge upheld claims of constructive unfair dismissal and harassment related to age and disability – as Ms Clark was managing a long-term health condition – as well as discrimination. The surgery was also found to have victimised her by failing to take action against Dr Williams after Ms Clark brought a grievance.
Judge Harfield found the surgery created a "intimidating, degrading, humiliating, and offensive" environment for Ms Clark.
She awarded a remedy of £142,803 including £60,873 for financial losses, £32,550 for injury to feelings, and £16,844 for unfair dismissal.

Woman wins £142k in harassment case against GP who called her 'an old knacker'

Dr George Williams was said to have an "obsession" with Catherine Clark and her family. A former GP surgery manager who was branded an "old knacker" and her daughter a "fat p***k" by one of her bosses has won more than £142,000 in compensation. A tribunal found Catherine Clark, 62, had been harassed, bullied and unfairly forced out of her job. ‌ The practice manager was working at Gardden Road Surgery in Rhosllanerchrugog, near Wrexham, when she was subjected to a string of vile messages behind her back – including cruel jibes about her age, mental health, and family. ‌ The employment tribunal heard that Dr George Williams, a female GP and one of the partners at the practice, privately referred to Ms Clark as an 'old knacker' and mocked her family by calling them the 'Clarkashians' – a dig at the Kardashians – while gossiping with colleagues via WhatsApp. In one shocking message, Dr Williams told her then-boyfriend she was 'trying to dislodge the old knacker' and compared Ms Clark to 'a decent tumour' with 'a long root'. Judge Rachel Harfield described the comment as 'harassment related to age', likening the insult to 'a reference to an old horse that needed to be put down'. Ms Clark, who had confided in Dr Williams about her mental health struggles, was devastated to discover she had also been labelled a 'drug-seeker' by colleagues for being prescribed diazepam. Messages shared between Dr Williams and others included further insults about Ms Clark's family. Her daughter was called a 'fat p***k', while another relative was cruelly referred to as '10 pints'. ‌ The abuse only came to light in December 2021 after Dr Williams' ex-boyfriend contacted Ms Clark, claiming the GP had an 'obsession' with her and her family. Ms Clark said she was left heartbroken and cried for days. She resigned from the practice after feeling her formal complaints had been brushed aside — and took legal action. ‌ Judge Harfield ruled in Ms Clark's favour, saying she had been constructively unfairly dismissed and subjected to discrimination and harassment due to her age and disability, as she was managing a long-term health condition. The tribunal found that the surgery failed to take action against Dr Williams and had created an 'intimidating, degrading, humiliating and offensive' environment. ‌ Ms Clark was awarded £142,803 in total – including £60,873 in lost income, £32,550 for injury to feelings, and £16,844 for unfair dismissal. Dr Williams tried to argue that the 'old knacker' phrase was not meant in a derogatory way and claimed she sometimes called her own mother 'old dear' in affection. But the judge firmly rejected the excuse. WalesOnline reported that when they contacted the surgery for comment, calls were abruptly ended twice. On a third attempt, a staff member simply said the practice would not be commenting.

'I tried Megababe's anti-chafe stick - it's a lifesaver for the heatwave'

While the hot weather is glorious, and I find myself finding any excuse to get outside in the sunshine - I've never done so many lunch break walks in my life - it also comes with some pretty irritating side effects. Chafing is, and has always been the bane of my life, especially when I fancy wearing a pretty summer dress or cycling shorts. The red, irritated and hot skin on my thighs feels as if I've just set fire to my legs, and sometimes I even get rashes that can last all evening. It got to a point where I'd have to wear shorts under a dress just to stop the rubbing - but would then have to suffer with having two layers on my legs, which would be equally as worse. So when I came across Megababe's Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick, I knew I needed to give it a go. 'Fat Face's midi dress with pockets is the most flattering and comfy thing in my summer wardrobe' Vicky Pattison stuns in flattering striped pink midi dress with pockets and its selling fast Formulated with aloe, vitamin E, pomegranate seed extract, and grapeseed oil, it's full of good ingredients that melts instantly into skin and is cooling and relieving. You simply just glide this anti-friction balm over your arms, thighs or anywhere that tends toward roughness or chafing. It also has a toxin-free formula includes soothing aloe and antioxidant-rich vitamin E to keep skin happy and hydrated, so it's a win win. What I first noticed was the smell, it smells absolutely divine, and I felt confident with it on knowing it smelt good. When applied, it glided so gracefully onto my legs and didn't even need rubbing in. It comes in a solid balm, but instantly turns oily as you start to apply. It applied liberally, and covered up the areas well which I was pleased about, as I was worried about it being a little dry or even too oily, it wasn't. Perhaps a little more on the oily side and perhaps I used too much as it left me feeling a little too wet. But despite it smelling and going on nicely? How did it hold up? It's clear to say this stuff lasts. Despite being thoroughly put to the test in 30C heat in London - the tubes are where the real chafing starts to happen - I didn't get any irritation. Due to it being so hot and sticky on my morning commute and at work, I noticed I had sweat off a lot of it by the time I was making my way home, so I had to reapply before I made my way home, but it was more a precaution than a neccessity. My only issue is that I am worried it may be quite oily, especially if it heats up in my bag during the day. I have also seen others say the oil has left stains on their clothes, so I am going to be quite wary of this in the future. Nevertheless, I am thrilled to have found a product that finally works.
