White Sox ban fan for taunt about Ketel Marte's late mother

Reuters5 hours ago

June 25 - The fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother has been banned from future games at Chicago's Rate Field, the White Sox announced Wednesday.
The fan, who is 22, was ejected from Tuesday night's game at the request of Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister, per the Arizona Republic.
Per ESPN, the fan reportedly was very apologetic and admitted to being very inappropriate with his comments.
Marte belted a solo homer in the first inning of Tuesday's 4-1 win. He was batting in the seventh when the remarks were made about his mother Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017.
Luvollo put his arm around Marte and talked with him during a pitching change while the White Sox were batting.
The manager said he heard what the fan said but declined to repeat it.
"(Marte) put his head down, and I could tell it had an immediate impact on him, for sure," Lovullo said.
"I could see he was sobbing. It hurt. I told him, 'I love you and I'm with you and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.'"
Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo also consoled Marte during the pitching change. Perdomo was angry about the incident, as he told reporters afterward.
"That can't happen, "Perdomo said. "Everybody knows how Ketel is. He's fun. He plays the game hard. I feel bad for him. I feel mad about it. I hope MLB can do something with that guy. I don't know who it was, but they've got to do something. We can't continue to do that (expletive) here in MLB.
"(The fan) should be banned, for sure."

BREAKING NEWS Super Bowl winner and New York Jets legend Gerry Philbin dead at 83

The New York Jets have announced the death of legendary defensive end Gerry Philbin at the age of 83. Philbin was on the team that won the Super Bowl with the Jets in 1969, so far the only title in the history of the organization. In a statement announcing his passing, the Jets described Philbin as 'the undersized, big-hearted, highly productive and well-decorated defensive end' for the team. At 6ft 2, Philbin was considered short for his position but natural ability covered anything he lacked in height. He told the Jets in 2018: 'I got the most out of how hard I worked, because I was a little disadvantaged with size and overcame it. 'I wanted to be an All-Star. I wanted to win the Super Bowl. And the personal goals of getting elected to the All-Time AFL Team. And then finally, becoming a Ring of Honor recipient with the Jets. All those things I cherish a lot.'

Jacob Misiorowski shines to lead Brewers over Pirates

June 25 - Rookie starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski was stellar through five innings for the Milwaukee Brewers in a 4-2 win in the rubber match of a three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Misiorowski (3-0) struck out a career-high eight in his third major-league start and held Pittsburgh to just two hits, both singles. Reliever Trevor Megill threw a perfect ninth for the save. Milwaukee has won six of its past seven games. Starter Paul Skenes (4-7) allowed four runs on four hits and fanned four in four innings for the Pirates, who have lost four of six. The Brewers went through all nine batters as they built a 4-0 lead in the second inning. After Isaac Collins drew a leadoff walk, Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each followed with a single to center field to load the bases with nobody out. Collins then scored on Joey Ortiz's groundout along the first-base line to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead, and Eric Haase doubled to bring in Turang to make it 2-0. Sal Frelick connected on a splitter that went to Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales, but an overthrow to catcher Henry Davis at the plate allowed Durbin to come around and push it to 3-0. Christian Yelich increased the lead to four runs with a single to left field that brought in Haase. It snapped a stretch of nine straight starts in which Skenes had allowed two runs or fewer. Skenes settled down after that, getting the Brewers out in order in each of the next two innings before he was lifted. Pittsburgh broke the shutout in the seventh off reliever Grant Anderson. With one out, Oneil Cruz sent a sinker to left field, and a fielding error by Collins allowed him to get to second on the play. Tommy Pham then drove him in with a single to cut it to 4-1. The Pirates narrowed it to 4-2 in the eighth. Adam Frazier drew a one-out walk, and Spencer Horwitz drove him in with a double to right field. --Field Level Media

Lenyn Sosa (2 HRs) powers White Sox past Diamondbacks

June 25 - Lenyn Sosa went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs and Andrew Benintendi also homered as the host Chicago White Sox defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 on Wednesday to avoid a series sweep. Kyle Teel and Mike Tauchman had three hits apiece to help Chicago out-hit Arizona 12-8. Rookie right-hander Sean Burke delivered five innings of two-run ball for the White Sox, who won for the second time in four games. Arizona opened the scoring in the first inning for the third time in as many games in the series. Back in the lineup after leaving with shoulder soreness Monday, first baseman Josh Naylor belted a two-run home run against Burke with two outs. Chicago answered in the bottom half on a solo blast from Benintendi and an RBI single off the bat of Teel. Miguel Vargas walked and stole second base ahead of the hit. The White Sox returned to the long ball in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, as Sosa drilled a Zac Gallen pitch for a two-run home run into the left field bleachers. Sosa greeted reliever Juan Morillo with an RBI single with one out in the sixth. White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. left the game in the first inning with left hamstring tightness. He played the top of the first in the outfield before Austin Slater replaced him as a pinch hitter in the bottom half. Burke (4-7) spaced five hits and two walks with a season-high-tying seven strikeouts to earn his first victory since May 23. Gallen fell to 5-9 after scattering five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two. Naylor had two hits for the Diamondbacks. Arizona drew within 6-3 on an RBI single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the eighth, but Sosa's second homer of the afternoon restored a four-run lead for Chicago. Arizona struck out nine times while stranding seven runners on base. The Diamondbacks' Nos. 1-3 hitters went a combined 2-for-13 with seven strikeouts. --Field Level Media
