Bhopal's 90-Degree Railway Bridge Reminds Everyone Of Temple Run Game, Here's Why
A railway overbridge (RoB) constructed in Bhopal with a strange 90-degree turn has left social media users baffled.
A photo of a railway overbridge (RoB) constructed in Bhopal has gone viral on social media because of a unique yet dangerous feature – its 90-degree sharp turn. Constructed near Aishbagh Stadium, the bridge's dangerous turn may not have been an oversight. The officials associated with the construction of the railway overbridge cited the lack of land in the area and the presence of a nearby metro rail station, a report in PTI stated. That the sharp angle wasn't an engineering fault but a design choice.
'Due to the metro station, there is limited availability of land at the point. Due to the lack of land, there was no other option. The purpose of the RoB is to connect the two colonies." Only small vehicles will run on this overbridge, he said, adding that heavy vehicles will not be allowed to use it.
'It will be operated with full safety and the speed of vehicles as per the instructions of the Indian Road Congress," PTI quoted Public Works Department (Bridge Department) Chief Engineer V D Verma as saying.
Built at a reported cost of Rs 18 crore, the bridge is yet to be operational for the public.
A photo of the odd structure soon circulated on social media platform 'X' with many raising concerns regarding the 90-degree turn and it could potentially be dangerous for motorists. People also hilariously compared the bridge to the popular Temple Run game.
The bridge reminded folks on the Internet of a clock tower built in Bihar that made national headlines earlier this year.
This shabbily painted, poorly finished, concrete clock tower in Bihar Sharif, built under 'Smart City' project, had its clock stop working within 24 hours of inauguration.Guess the production cost? Only ₹40 lakh! Just 40 lakhs for this architectural marvel! Hats off! pic.twitter.com/GZqnGX8z7Q

The clock tower built in Bihar Sharif was made functional in a haste during Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Pragati Yatra, a report in Dainik Bhaskar stated. However, in a day's time after its setup, the clock stopped ticking. It is said that thieves barged into the structure to steal copper wires. The tower stood lifeless thereafter. The time it displayed (as seen in widely-circulated photos) twice a day was 4:20.

Close-up shots of the clock tower showed a lack of workmanship with no intricate design. It was rough around the edges and the incomplete concrete frame was painted in white. Others dug up photos of what the clock tower was destined to look like in its final form, which was far from reality.

No change in budget for shoes for schoolkids
Mangaluru: Every academic year, govt distributes free shoes and socks to students in primary and secondary schools across the state, and over the years, the budget hasn't been revised. Parents and teachers have raised concerns about their quality as School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) have to operate within the budget. In Karnataka, shoes and socks are supplied to nearly 40 lakh students. This year, Rs 111 crore was earmarked for this initiative. SDMCs are responsible for procuring these items, allocating a budget of Rs 265 per set for grades 1 to 5; Rs 295 for grades 6 to 8; and Rs 325 for grades 9 to 10. In coastal, Malnad, and some north Karnataka districts, chappals have been supplied instead of shoes due to monsoon that last for four months. The education dept has launched this programme in 2015-16 to encourage regular attendance and reduce dropout rates among students. "Over the years, the budget allocation for the purchase of the footwear has remained the same, but the price of the footwear has risen. We are trying our best to supply the best-quality footwear to our children after taking quotations from many vendors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Willenhall This Is the Most Affordable Private Medical Insurance Private Medical Plans Get Quote Undo Also, they are given after Sept when there is a decrease in rainfall," said an SDMC president. A schoolteacher also added that the footwear given to children does not last more than six months. A vendor said there are many conditions for procuring them, and one of them is the ISI mark. "When the SDMC is unable to procure the materials as per the budget allocation, they go for low-quality ones. As a result, the footwear provided to children becomes unusable after a few months. I try my best to supply material at the price and provide only ISI certified ones. We have sold goods to schools with no profit or at times incurring loss," the vendor shared. Mohidduin Kutty, president of SDMC coordination committee, said they ask for a minimum warranty of six months from the vendors for the material supplied. "Footwear supplied must be used only with the uniform. However, we have noticed that children use it during playtime as well, which cuts down its life," said Kutty. V Rashmi Mahesh, principal secretary to govt, department of school education and literacy, was unavailable for comments. MCD Standing Committee reviews gaushalas, dog shelters and sanitation issues
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) The Standing Committee of the MCD on Wednesday held discussions and issued directions on key issues to strengthen civic amenities, sanitation and public welfare. Ranging from cow dung cakes and garbage management to stray cattle, dog shelters, plastic-free measures and mechanical road sweeping machines, several issues were discussed during the meeting. Chaired by Standing Committee chief Satya Sharma, the meeting emphasised that the corporation's responsibility was not confined to garbage management but also extended to ensuring citizens' access to basic facilities, a safe environment and quality education. She stressed that grievances raised by councillors must be addressed with accountability and directed officials to respond in a timely and effective manner. The committee instructed that all public toilets under the MCD be given special attention for cleanliness and repair. It was also decided that the building plan approval process would be made simpler and more transparent so that citizens with duly sanctioned plans do not face unnecessary harassment. The civic body further underlined the need for regular inspections of swimming pools under its jurisdiction to avoid accidents, while calling for strict action against illegal spa centres running without licences. The meeting, which lasted over five hours, saw councillors voicing concerns on issues ranging from the poor condition of stray cattle to the management of stray dogs in the city. Some members suggested that, in view of the shortage of 'gaushalas', cows could be sent to other states until proper shelters are set up in Delhi. 'When cows are not being looked after properly, how will the corporation manage dog shelters?" Garbage management and plastic-free measures also featured prominently, with members demanding stricter monitoring of waste disposal and tougher enforcement against plastic use. Heated arguments broke out between a councillor and an official over certain allegations during the proceedings. At the beginning of the meeting, the corporation also presented details on the use of mechanical road sweeping machines. According to documents, the MCD has a total of 52 such machines deployed across its zones, spending nearly Rs 2 crore annually on their operation. The Central and Rohini zones have been allotted seven machines each, while Shahdara (South) has six. Each machine is operated by a driver and a helper, with attendance tracked through geo-tagging and the Swachh Bharat Mission (e-SBM) portal. Of the 52 machines, 24 are run in two shifts to ensure daily cleaning of major roads. Additionally, the corporation owns 12 smaller road sweeping machines of 4.5 cubic metre capacity, which are being used in areas such as Karol Bagh, Rohini, Central Zone and Najafgarh. A major proposal approved in the meeting was to make MCD's community halls available for skill development and vocational training. Sharma informed that the corporation has 278 community halls, of which 122 remain vacant or underutilised. These will now be opened between 3 pm and 8 pm to provide employment-oriented training, particularly for local youth and women. Describing the discussions as positive and solution-oriented, Sharma said several important suggestions from councillors were incorporated into the resolutions. She asserted that the MCD was committed to delivering civic convenience and maintaining a clean environment, while warning officials that negligence in matters of public interest would not be tolerated. Joint committee to be constituted for making Yamuna river clean: Nayab Saini
Agency: Chandigarh, Aug 20 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday said that a joint committee comprising senior officials of the Central Water Commission (CWC) and Haryana and Delhi governments will be constituted to make the Yamuna river clean on the lines of the Ganga river. This committee will not only focus on the cleaning of the Yamuna but also work towards resolving other related issues. According to an official statement here, Saini attended a meeting on 'Inter-State Coordination Related to Yamuna Water Rejuvenation" chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister, C R Patil, in New Delhi on Wednesday. Speaking after the meeting, Saini said that since the formation of the Delhi government under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, developmental plans are being prepared at a rapid pace, and their implementation is progressing continuously. He said that work for cleaning the Yamuna river is being carried out on a war footing. The process of treating sewage water from drains through Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) before releasing it into the river has been significantly accelerated, Saini said. He said that under the ongoing campaign, 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage had already been removed from the Yamuna. He said that rejuvenation of the Yamuna is the top priority of both the Haryana and Delhi governments and assured that the public will soon witness a clean and rejuvenated river. The chief minister said that 'the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) level of the drain falling into the Yamuna river from Palla village in Karnal district is 80, and necessary steps are being taken to further purify this water". He said that there has been a significant improvement in the BOD level of Yamuna water at Okhla in Faridabad. To further enhance water quality, 44 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) have already been established, through which about 620 MLD of water is being treated every day. In addition, nine more STPs are being set up to clean another 510 MLD of water. He said that issues related to the environment and water know no boundaries, and both states will have to work together to make the Yamuna completely clean. Saini said that strict measures are being taken to ensure that polluted water is not discharged directly into the river, and necessary directions have already been issued to the officers in this regard. He informed that the services of representatives and experts from both Delhi and Haryana will be utilised to monitor the Najafgarh lake and drain. In addition, the BOD level of the polluted water being discharged from industries in Haryana will also be regularly checked, he said. In the meeting, Union Secretary Devshree Mukherjee, Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra Kumar, Haryana Additional Chief Secretary Vineet Garg, Additional Chief Secretary, Irrigation Department, Haryana, Anurag Agarwal and senior officials of Irrigation and Environment Department were also present. Meanwhile, Saini strongly condemned the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her camp office in Civil Lines in the national capital on Wednesday morning.
