Devotees in Rajasthan throng temples on Janmashtami

Jaipur, Aug 16 (PTI) Lakhs of devotees thronged temples across Rajasthan on Saturday to celebrate Janmashtami, with Jaipur's historic Govind Devji temple witnessing a massive footfall since the early hours of the day, officials said.
Devotees began queuing up at the Govind Devji temple around 3 am for Mangal darshan, which opened at 4.30 am.
Lines of devotees extended well beyond the temple premises, and authorities said lakhs are expected to offer prayers throughout the day.
Similar rush was witnessed at other prominent temples including Gopinathji, ISKCON and Akshaya Patra temples in Jaipur.
Police have strengthened security arrangements with the use of technology-driven surveillance. CCTV cameras installed at key temples are being used to monitor suspicious elements, Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said.
'Apart from advanced CCTV cameras installed at prominent places, policemen in civil dress have been deployed to ensure safe environment for devotees," the officer added.
Temples across the city and other districts have been adorned with flowers and lighting for the festivities, which will culminate with midnight rituals marking the birth of Lord Krishna. PTI AG APL NB

SUV driver runs over several pedestrians, arrested
Lucknow: There was chaos and panic when a speeding SUV ran over a group of pedestrians in Telibagh area under PGI police station on Aug 17 night. The incident occurred near the Varadani Hanuman Mandir, where devotees had gathered for Janmashtami celebrations. The incident left three individuals critically injured and several others with minor injuries. The accident took place around 9 pm as worshippers were making their way to the temple. An SUV from the Cantonment side hit pedestrians from behind. Among the injured were Rajesh, Anand Prakash Verma and an unidentified male, all of whom sustained serious injuries. Rajesh's wife, Nagma, filed a formal complaint with police. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver, instead of stopping, accelerated further, causing additional harm as he attempted to flee the scene. The vehicle collided with multiple other vehicles during the escape attempt, even after one of its tires burst. The driver reportedly drove over a divider and reversed, running into other vehicles in his attempt to evade being nabbed. The driver was identified as Akshay Singh, alias Sagar Singh, 29, resident of Jayanarayan Road, Hussainabad. Singh was allegedly under influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Police have seized the SUV and are conducting further proceedings. Singh has a criminal history, with eight prior cases registered against him across Lucknow, Barabanki and Rae Bareli, on charges of theft, robbery and other serious offenses. The victims, including Rajesh and Anand Prakash Verma, are under medical treatment. Residents expressed outrage over the incident, demanding stricter measures to prevent such reckless behavior in the future. ADCP, South Zone, Vasanth Kumar, said police are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident and a political flag on the SUV pointing at political connections. AI helps Nagpur police nab hit-and-run suspect after viral video of man carrying wife on bike
A week after the video of a man carrying his wife's body, who was hit by a truck, went viral, Nagpur police have nabbed the suspect. The biker, Amit Yadav, claimed that he was forced to tie his wife's body to the motorcycle as nobody came to his aid after the accident on the Nagpur-Jabalpur national highway on August 9. However, the cops have now arrested the driver behind the hit-and-run accident with the help of artificial intelligence. How AI helped crack the case As per a PTI report, Deolapar Police scanned footage from various CCTV cameras using AI-MARVEL (Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), which has been designed to assist the police in investigation. 'We used AI algorithms developed at MARVEL to analyse four hours of footage from three toll nakas. The first algorithm sieved out all the red trucks and the second algorithm did a speed-based calculation of these trucks to identify which truck could be involved. On the basis of the AI alert generated, we arrested the accused yesterday from 700 km away near Kanpur,' Harssh A Poddar told The Indian Express. "Subsequently, the driver was identified as Satyapal Rajendra (28), a resident of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. The truck was impounded on August 16, and the accused was arrested," police officials told news agency PTI. (With agency inputs)

Three murders reported in 2 days in city
Surat: The city witnessed three separate murders over two days during the Independence Day and Janmashtami festivities, keeping police on high alert. In the first incident, on Saturday morning, a farmer discovered a body in a drainage channel near Deladva village. Dindoli police identified the victim as 38-year-old Subhash Late, a vegetable broker from Sardar Market and a resident of Parvat Patiya. His body bore multiple stab wounds, and police suspect the killing was linked to personal enmity or relationship issues. A day earlier, a 40-year-old man from the Sachin GIDC area was stabbed to death by his 17-year-old son late on August 15. Police said the minor suspected his father of having an illicit relationship, which had led to frequent arguments. During one such quarrel, the boy fatally stabbed his father in the chest. The third case was reported on Friday night under the Sahara Darwaja overbridge, where 18-year-old Raja Jaiswal of Godadara was killed in his sleep. Police said rickshaw driver Akash Sonavane allegedly slit Raja's throat before fleeing. Investigators believe the attack stemmed from an old feud, as Raja's brother had earlier allegedly stabbed Sonavane during a dispute. Separate cases have been registered at Dindoli, Sachin GIDC, and Mahidharpura police stations. Police teams are investigating all three incidents and searching for the accused in two of the cases.
