Monterrey Advances to Knockout Rounds at the Club World Cup With 4-0 Victory Over Urawa
Monterrey scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat the Urawa Red Diamonds 4–0 on Wednesday night and advance to the knockout rounds in the Club World Cup.
Monterrey finished second in Group E behind Inter Milan, which defeated River Plate 2–0 in a simultaneous game in Seattle. Monterrey plays Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Atlanta in the round of 16. The match drew just 14,312 to the 89,702-capacity Rose Bowl.
Nelson Deossa ripped the ball from 35 yards out that Urawa goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa got a hand on but couldn't stop in the 30th minute to put Monterrey up 1–0. After a cooling break, Germán Berterame tucked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 2–0. Jesús Corona added another goal from distance that lofted up and dropped into the goal in the 39th. Berterame added a second goal in stoppage time.
The Red Diamonds had been eliminated after losses to River Plate and Inter Milan. Liga MX's Monterrey was scrappy from the start. Alphonso Alvarado had a header in the opening minutes that hit the crossbar.
Key Moment: Sergio Ramos had scored the only goal for Monterrey in its first two matches before the team unleashed their three goals in the first half, sending the throngs of Rayados fans at the Rose Bowl into a frenzy. Monterrey, which started the day in third in the standings, needed to score because goals mattered in the group standings.
Takeaways: With a commanding lead, Monterrey eased up in the waning minutes out of caution because four players were handed yellow cards in the previous match against River Plate. If any of the four were carded again, they would be unavailable for the round of 16 match.

Inzaghi looks for more Hilal firepower in must-win FIFA Club World Cup clash
NASHVILLE: In Nashville, the US' self-proclaimed Music City, Al-Hilal's new coach Simone Inzaghi is hoping to fine-tune an Al-Hilal forward line that has performed worryingly off-key so far at this month's FIFA Club World Cup. With only a Ruben Neves penalty to show for almost 200 minutes of football in the US, the Riyadh side face Mexico's CF Pachuca tonight knowing only a win will do if they are to progress to the round of 16. The Blues will need to find their rhythm. For all the praise received following the statement 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in Miami, it is Sunday's dull stalemate with Red Bull Salzburg that is freshest in mind. The statistics do not make for pleasant reading: across the two matches, Hilal managed 31 shots, but only six hit the target. Discount the penalty and it equates to six shots for every one on target — hardly in harmony with a team of Hilal's wealth of ambition. Nonetheless, Inzaghi was generous with his praise for the players' effort after the scoreless draw. He confirmed in his pre-match press conference yesterday that striker Aleksandar Mitrovic remains sidelined, though Saudi Arabia center-back Hassan Al-Tambakti trained as normal despite hobbling off against Salzburg. While the front three is likely to remain unchanged with Marcos Leonardo operating between Salem Al-Dawsari and Malcom, the Hilal bench might have one new face should Inzaghi need a spark in attack. Kaio Cesar has proclaimed himself fully recovered from the hamstring injury that has kept him out since May 16. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old winger trained with the squad before being pulled aside and taken through his paces by muscle reconditioning expert Claudio Spicciariello. The Brazilian told Arab News he is '100 percent ready' should Inzaghi call upon him. 'I am happy to be finished with the treatment and excited to be able to help my team again,' said Kaio, who has six goal involvements since joining Hilal in January from Portugal's Vitoria Guimaraes. 'To start the match, I think it's difficult because I've been out for a while, but I can play some minutes and hopefully make a difference. 'I'm ready, so it depends on the coach now, but I am with my mind in a very good place, lots of positive thoughts, and ready to help my team with goals, assists, running, and doing whatever I can to make sure we progress.' Sitting in third place in Group H with two points, two behind Madrid and Salzburg who also play each other tonight, the result of that match will determine how many goals Hilal need to progress. But nothing less than victory against Pachuca will suffice if the 2021 AFC Asian Champions League winners are to reach the round of 16 — a feat no other Asian or African team has managed Stateside, with all seven other representatives from the AFC and CAF already eliminated. 'Firstly, we are only worried about ourselves and our game — we need to do our job first and then we can look at the other result,' Kaio said when asked if the result in the Madrid-Salzburg match will play on the players' minds and add extra pressure. 'Getting the win we need first of all, that is my motivation. That is our only concern. The pressure is already big because the club is big and the responsibility is always to win every match. 'Now the pressure is even more because we need to get the victory, but we have a lot of big players who are prepared for this type of moment.' One such player is midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The stylish Serb has been a key part of Hilal's success since joining from Lazio in the summer of 2023. And his role is expected to gain even more importance under Inzaghi, with whom he shone in Rome between 2016 and 2021. He said he cannot fault his teammates for the 0-0 draw with Salzburg and that they will continue on the same path that has brought them this far — with one key difference. 'We have played two good games so far,' he said. 'The last game, we played very well and were just missing a goal to win the game, but this now being the last game of the group stage, we will do everything we can to win. 'I've said it before, but I am happy how we went in these first two games and we will go the same way until the end, but of course we need to score more goals.' Pachuca cannot be underestimated. They have netted in both their matches so far, and while ultimately losing both, they have enough in attack to cause problems, especially in 19-year-old Elias Montiel. The last time the reigning Concacaf Champions League winners faced an Arab side at a FIFA tournament was in last year's Challenger Cup in Qatar. On that occasion, following a 0-0 draw with Al-Ahly, Pachuca triumphed on penalties. When the music stops tonight, there will be no penalties: If Hilal fail to score — draw or not — they will be heading home. No encore.

Mbappe Absent from Real Madrid Squad for Salzburg Club World Cup Clash
Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the Real Madrid squad for Thursday's final Club World Cup group game against Red Bull Salzburg, despite returning to training following illness. The French superstar did not feature in the list of 23 players named by coach Xabi Alonso and published by the club for the match in Philadelphia, in which the two teams are targeting a place in the last 16. Mbappe had returned to training on Wednesday after missing Real's first two matches at the tournament in the United States due to illness. He was taken to hospital last Thursday for tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. He played no part in Real's opening game, a 1-1 draw with Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami, or the 3-1 defeat of Mexico's Pachuca at the weekend. Alonso did indicate after the latter game that Mbappe was on the mend, saying: "He is doing better, he is recovering." Real posted images of Mbappe in training on Wednesday on their website, as the squad worked out at their Florida base before travelling north in the afternoon to Philadelphia. It is there, at Lincoln Financial Field, where Madrid will take on the Austrians in their final Group H match and will be looking for a victory which will confirm their progress to the last 16 in first place in the section. A draw can also take them through to the next round, with Manchester City and Juventus the possible opponents in the last 16. Mbappe has scored 43 goals in 56 appearances since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain last year. His last game was for France in a 2-0 win away to Germany in the UEFA Nations League on June 8.

Inter Milan Strike Late to Progress with 2-0 Win over River Plate
Inter Milan scored twice in the last 18 minutes to beat River Plate 2-0 on Wednesday and progress to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup as Group E winners and send the Argentines home. Teenager Francesco Esposito broke the deadlock soon after River had been reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Lucas Martinez Quarta with Alessandro Bastoni adding the second in stoppage time. The 20-times Italian champions will face Brazilian club Fluminense in the last 16 in Charlotte on Monday with Monterrey, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0, going through in second place a point ahead of River. An intense match turned nasty after Bastoni's goal with River's Gonzalo Montiel also sent off for two yellow cards during a series of melees which continued as the players left the field under a shower of missiles from the crowd, Reuters reported. "We have the job done. We qualify for the further stage of this competition. We are pleased with that," said Inter coach Cristian Chivu. "The game was very tough for us in the first half, River had a lot of aggression, a lot of intensity. In the second half, we controlled the game a little bit better and ... after the red card it was much easier for us." Martinez Quarta's exit for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the last defender turned the match with the first Inter goal coming seven minutes later. Esposito took a neat touch on Petar Sucic's pass to get onto his right foot before turning and lashing the ball into the net. River were spent by the time Bastoni skipped through the tiring defense to add Inter's second with a low left-foot strike five minutes into stoppage time. The packed ranks of River fans at Lumen Field ensured a rocking atmosphere from the start and they were treated to a full-blooded clash with plenty of endeavor but no goals until the last quarter. River's best moves came through Real Madrid-bound Franco Mastantuono, but the 17-year-old midfielder only managed to get one of his handful of shots on target. Esposito also had a couple of good chances to open the scoring and his skipper Lautaro Martinez was particularly profligate, hitting the post with the best of his host of openings. River's Facundo Colidio headed the ball straight at Inter keeper Yann Sommer with a gilt-edged chance in the 64th minute but the forward was substituted in a tactical rejig a minute later after Martinez Quarta had been sent off.
