Monterrey Advances to Knockout Rounds at the Club World Cup With 4-0 Victory Over Urawa
Monterrey scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat the Urawa Red Diamonds 4–0 on Wednesday night and advance to the knockout rounds in the Club World Cup.
Monterrey finished second in Group E behind Inter Milan, which defeated River Plate 2–0 in a simultaneous game in Seattle. Monterrey plays Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Atlanta in the round of 16. The match drew just 14,312 to the 89,702-capacity Rose Bowl.
Nelson Deossa ripped the ball from 35 yards out that Urawa goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa got a hand on but couldn't stop in the 30th minute to put Monterrey up 1–0. After a cooling break, Germán Berterame tucked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 2–0. Jesús Corona added another goal from distance that lofted up and dropped into the goal in the 39th. Berterame added a second goal in stoppage time.
The Red Diamonds had been eliminated after losses to River Plate and Inter Milan. Liga MX's Monterrey was scrappy from the start. Alphonso Alvarado had a header in the opening minutes that hit the crossbar.

Mbappe Absent from Real Madrid Squad for Salzburg Club World Cup Clash
Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the Real Madrid squad for Thursday's final Club World Cup group game against Red Bull Salzburg, despite returning to training following illness. The French superstar did not feature in the list of 23 players named by coach Xabi Alonso and published by the club for the match in Philadelphia, in which the two teams are targeting a place in the last 16. Mbappe had returned to training on Wednesday after missing Real's first two matches at the tournament in the United States due to illness. He was taken to hospital last Thursday for tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. He played no part in Real's opening game, a 1-1 draw with Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami, or the 3-1 defeat of Mexico's Pachuca at the weekend. Alonso did indicate after the latter game that Mbappe was on the mend, saying: "He is doing better, he is recovering." Real posted images of Mbappe in training on Wednesday on their website, as the squad worked out at their Florida base before travelling north in the afternoon to Philadelphia. It is there, at Lincoln Financial Field, where Madrid will take on the Austrians in their final Group H match and will be looking for a victory which will confirm their progress to the last 16 in first place in the section. Inter Milan Strike Late to Progress with 2-0 Win over River Plate
Inter Milan scored twice in the last 18 minutes to beat River Plate 2-0 on Wednesday and progress to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup as Group E winners and send the Argentines home. Teenager Francesco Esposito broke the deadlock soon after River had been reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Lucas Martinez Quarta with Alessandro Bastoni adding the second in stoppage time. The 20-times Italian champions will face Brazilian club Fluminense in the last 16 in Charlotte on Monday with Monterrey, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0, going through in second place a point ahead of River. An intense match turned nasty after Bastoni's goal with River's Gonzalo Montiel also sent off for two yellow cards during a series of melees which continued as the players left the field under a shower of missiles from the crowd, Reuters reported. "We have the job done. We qualify for the further stage of this competition. We are pleased with that," said Inter coach Cristian Chivu. "The game was very tough for us in the first half, River had a lot of aggression, a lot of intensity. In the second half, we controlled the game a little bit better and ... after the red card it was much easier for us." Martinez Quarta's exit for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the last defender turned the match with the first Inter goal coming seven minutes later. Esposito took a neat touch on Petar Sucic's pass to get onto his right foot before turning and lashing the ball into the net. River were spent by the time Bastoni skipped through the tiring defense to add Inter's second with a low left-foot strike five minutes into stoppage time. The packed ranks of River fans at Lumen Field ensured a rocking atmosphere from the start and they were treated to a full-blooded clash with plenty of endeavor but no goals until the last quarter. River's best moves came through Real Madrid-bound Franco Mastantuono, but the 17-year-old midfielder only managed to get one of his handful of shots on target. Esposito also had a couple of good chances to open the scoring and his skipper Lautaro Martinez was particularly profligate, hitting the post with the best of his host of openings. River's Facundo Colidio headed the ball straight at Inter keeper Yann Sommer with a gilt-edged chance in the 64th minute but the forward was substituted in a tactical rejig a minute later after Martinez Quarta had been sent off.
