Walmart and Best Friends Animal Society Team Up to Celebrate National Pet Month
BENTONVILLE, Ark., April 30, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May is National Pet Month, and Walmart is celebrating the joy pets bring to our lives while making it easier and more affordable to care for them. In collaboration with leading national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society and trusted suppliers, Walmart is helping customers adopt, give back and save big all month long with extra savings on top of Walmart's Every Day Low Prices.
Pet ownership continues to grow, with nearly 15% more households owning at least one pet compared to 20231. Even still, the cost of pet ownership remains top of mind for customers as 61% of pet owners say ownership costs have been more expensive than expected2. That's why Walmart is prioritizing making it easy and more affordable for customers to add a new best friend to the family and get their pet essentials during National Pet Month and all year long, with Walmart's Every Day Low Prices on the most sought-after brands and multiple ways to shop — in-store, online and on the Walmart app.
"We know pets are family, and that's why Walmart is dedicated to providing the best products and services to support them," said Kaitlyn Shadiow, vice president of merchandising, pets, Walmart U.S. "We are committed to making pet ownership accessible, affordable and enjoyable for everyone and we're excited to do that this National Pet Month with hundreds of rollbacks and thousands of deals, while also supporting pets in shelters all month long."

The funds will help cover pet adoption fees all month long at Best Friends locations nationwide, including:
Houston
Los Angeles
Northwest Arkansas
New York City
Salt Lake City

Other suppliers, such as Fresh Step, Nutrish, Unique Petz, Nylabone, Temptations, Pedigree, ADAMS Botanicals, Sulfodene, Spruce and Pooph are also giving back to Best Friends. Together, Walmart and its suppliers have collectively donated over $1 million to Best Friends over the past year.
On May 17, Walmart and Best Friends will host pet adoption events at select Walmart locations across the country. There, customers can meet, interact with and adopt their newest companion with adoption fees waived, courtesy of Walmart and Blue Buffalo. Events will also feature giveaways and sampling opportunities, and new adopters can take home goodie bags filled with essential pet products. Target beat low earnings expectations as shares drop
Target (TGT) continues to miss the mark on earnings day. The results on Wednesday morning aren't as shockingly bad as the first quarter, but the retailer is still struggling to find its place in the new economic norm of more discerning shoppers. Target's second quarter earnings narrowly surpassed consensus forecasts as it wrung out cost savings. The company also maintained the full-year outlook it slashed three months ago. But headwinds from a pressured US consumer, an influx of tariffs from the Trump administration, market-share loss to rival Walmart (WMT), and operational challenges were apparent. Target's comparable sales fell 1.9% from a year ago, led by a 3.2% drop at its stores. Comparable digital sales increased 4.3%. Gross profit margins declined to 29% from 30% a year ago. "While we're not pleased with the results, we're encouraged by the improved performance as we go into the third quarter of the year," Target chair and CEO Brian Cornell told me by video call. Prior to earnings day, Target's stock was down 23% in 2025, compared to Walmart's 13% gain. It shed 7% in morning trading on Wednesday. The discounter announced that longtime CEO Cornell's heavily groomed No. 2, Michael Fiddelke, will take over as CEO on Feb. 1, 2026. Cornell, who has been CEO of Target since August 2014, will slide into the executive chair position for an undetermined period of time. Fiddelke joined Target in 2003 as an intern and rose through the ranks to CFO and then COO. The number of transactions fell 1.3% in the quarter, and the average transaction amount dropped 0.6%. Full-year earnings per share are projected to be $7 to $9 (fiscal year 2024: $8.86), compared to estimates of $7.28. Comparable sales down by a low-single-digit percentage. Consumer Strength Signal Flashing Short-Term Caution Sign
Comparing the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) to the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) is a popular way to measure the strength of the consumer. The XLY is a consumer discretionary exchange-traded fund (ETF). Its two biggest holdings by far are (AMZN) and Tesla (TSLA), followed by Home Depot (HD) and Booking Holdings (BKNG), which provides online reservations for travel and restaurants. These companies will thrive only if consumers have enough to spend after their basic needs are met. The XLP is a consumer staples ETF whose biggest holdings are Walmart (WMT), Costco (COST), Procter & Gamble (PG), and Coca-Cola (KO). These companies provide basic groceries and everyday hygiene products, which are considered necessities. Invest in Gold Priority Gold: Up to $15k in Free Silver + Zero Account Fees on Qualifying Purchase Thor Metals Group: Best Overall Gold IRA American Hartford Gold: #1 Precious Metals Dealer in the Nation The theory is the XLY will outperform if consumers have plenty of money left over after necessities. This has been the case over the past four months. The relative strength of the XLY to the XLP has spiked above 1.20, its biggest reading since the beginning of the year. The chart below shows just a few instances of similar spikes over the past 10 years. The market, according to this measure, is indicating healthy consumer strength. Next, I look at historical instances of pops in the XLY/XLP relative strength to see how stocks performed going forward. When XLY Outperforms XLP I want to know if this spike in the consumer strength indicator has tended to lead to bullish stock returns. I went back to 1999, the first full year we have data on the two ETFs, and found times that the XLY/XLP four-month relative strength moved above 1.20. There have been 9 past occurrences. The table below summarizes the S&P 500 returns after them. The second table shows typical S&P 500 returns for comparison. Stocks tend to do poorly in the short term. The S&P 500 averaged a loss of 0.82% over the next month, with just 33% of returns positive. Over the next three months, the index gained just 0.44% on average, with 44% of the returns positive. The typical three-month return for the index was 1.82% with 67% of returns positive. The longer-term returns look better than the short-term returns. The six- and 12-month average returns are close to the market average. Looking at the individual signals is interesting. The table below shows the dates of each signal and subsequent S&P 500 returns. There's reason for optimism, as the first few signals were very bearish for stocks, especially in the long term. The recent signals have been much more bullish for the six and 12 month windows. The last five times this has signaled, the S&P 500 was positive every time over the next year, with a minimum return of 11.8% and an average of 26%. Above, we saw how the S&P 500 tended to perform after these XLY/XLP relative strength signals. The tables below summarize the returns of the two ETFs. The first table has the returns of the consumer discretionary ETF (XLY). The second table shows the consumer staples (XLP). You can't make a strong conclusion with only nine data points, but based on the data below, the XLY (consumer discretionary) stocks have done better after these stocks than the XLP (consumer staples) stocks. The XLY has also outperformed the S&P 500 after these signals.
