Ballymena United manager urges players to raise standards after ‘unacceptable' finish to last season

Ballymena United boss Jim Ervin demands better from his players this season after an 'unacceptable' end to last year's campaign.
The Sky Blues finished outside the top six before the Sports Direct Premiership's split in April and wound up ninth overall after winning just one of their last five League games.

Key Rangers star set to be ruled OUT of Celtic clash as SPFL rule comes into force

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THERE are still three weeks to go until Rangers face Celtic in the first Old Firm clash of the season. But the Light Blues look set to have a key man ruled OUT of the big derby showdown - and NOT through injury. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Nasser Djiga was sent-off for Rangers against Dundee Credit: Willie Vass 3 The defender will miss the league match Credit: PA 3 It's a huge blow for Russell Martin Credit: PA Rangers' domestic woes continued as they could only scrape a 1-1 draw at home against Dundee on Saturday evening. Russell Martin's men needed a last gasp James Tavernier penalty to rescue a point. It means Martin has failed to win both of his opening league matches as Gers boss after last week's 1-1 draw at Motherwell, leaving the Light Blues playing catch-up already. As has often been the case in recent years, Europe has provided the Gers with happier moments than at home. Having seen-off Panathinaikos 3-1 on aggregate, Rangers took control of their Champions League third qualifying round tie against Viktoria Plzen in midweek. They beat the Czech side 3-0 at Ibrox on Tuesday and their destiny is very much in their own hands ahead of the trip to Plzen this coming week. With the Premier Sports Cup last 16 taking place next weekend, the Gers' next league outing is against St Mirren on Sunday, August 24. However, that match will be POSTPONED should Rangers see-off Plzen and make it to the Champions League play-off round. The Gers themselves have requested - as per SPFL rules - that the St Mirren clash be called-off, with it slated as it stands to take place in between the play-off ties against either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge. That decision could, however, lead to a major Old Firm hammerblow. When Ross McCausland knew it was time to leave Rangers and why he's been blown away by his REPLACEMENTS In what was an evening to forget all round, Rangers had Nasser Djiga sent-off in the draw with Dundee. The on-loan Wolves defender was shown a red card after bringing down Fin Robertson with the Dee man clean through on goal. A one-game suspension now awaits Djiga. However, he will NOT miss Rangers' next match - next Saturday's cup clash with Alloa at Ibrox. As per SPFL rules, he will miss the next LEAGUE game instead. Therefore, should Rangers make it to the Champions League play-offs and have that St Mirren game postponed, the next league game will be that clash with CELTIC at Ibrox on August 31. It would be a massive blow for boss Martin and Rangers, with Djiga having been a hugely impressive figure so far. His absence could open the door for Emmanuel Fernandez to feature with the summer signing from Peterborough yet to make a competitive appearance since joining the Gers. Bangor's band of volunteers savouring Premiership return after years in the footballing wilderness

On Sunday, over 16 years on from their last top-flight outing, Bangor Football Club will complete probably the greatest boomerang in Irish League history. At Clandeboye Park, a bumper four-figure crowd will flock in for the Seasiders' first game back in the Sports Direct Premiership against Cliftonville, with the hosts' rise from the ashes having been as quick as its fall from grace.
