Satheesan, Vellappally signal truce ahead of Guru's birth anniversary

Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Friday signalled a truce with Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan ahead of Sree Narayana Guru's birth anniversary celebrations on September 18. Mr. Satheesan said he embraced the SNDP's decision to invite him to participate in the Chathayam Day celebrations by various taluk unions, including the one at the Guru's birthplace in Chempazhanthy. The SNDP Yogam would not have welcomed him without Mr. Natesan's whole-hearted consent, he added. Mr. Nateesan recently challenged Mr. Satheesan to declare that he would go into self-imposed political exile if the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) did not secure an emphatic victory with 100 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections. Mr. Natesan said he would reciprocate by quitting the post of SNDP general secretary if the UDF won. Mr. Satheesan picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Mr. Natesan. Nevertheless, he said he held the SNDP Yogam leader in esteem, given the latter's age and experience at the helm of the powerful Hindu social organisation. Mr. Satheesan requested Mr. Natesan to quit the top post if the UDF won in 2026. Mr. Satheesan said he politically differed with Mr. Natesan on certain aspects. For one, he had opposed the SNDP general secretary's purported criticism of the Indian Union Muslim League and confident Muslim social organisation leaders who he accused of using the political heft of the minority community to wrest educational institutions and other largesse from successive governments at the expense of majority community interests. Mr Satheesan cautioned that such statements would sow divisiveness in society. He said his dispute on some subjects with Mr. Natesan was principled and not personal.

AIMIM leader throws 'biryani party' to protest meat ban on Independence Day in Maharashtra

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Imtiaz Jaleel on Friday organised a "biryani party" at his residence in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to protest against the local civic body's meat ban in the city due to Independence Day and Janmashtami. Imtiaz Jaleel had earlier invited all Municipal Corporation commissioners to "join the Chicken Biryani and Mutton Korma party" at his residence. (X/@imtiaz_jaleel) The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation on Tuesday announced the closure of all shops, slaughterhouses, and outlets selling meat within city limits on two days, August 15 and 20, news agency PTI reported. The country is celebrating its 79th Independence Day and Janmashtami, a Hindu festival to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, on Friday. Meanwhile, 'Paryushan Parva', a significant festival of the Jain community that is marked by fasting and prayer, begins on August 20. To protest the meat ban, AIMIM leader and former MP Jaleel held a biryani party at his residence to oppose the ban on meat sales. "I have cooked chicken biryani along with a vegetarian dish. If the municipal commissioner comes and asks for vegetarian food, then I will offer it to him. But the government should not tell us what we should eat and what we should not," he said. ALSO READ | Meat ban orders on Independence Day spark political row, Owaisi leads opposition The leader from the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party said that such things should be stopped, terming the meat ban decision as "unfortunate". Earlier on Thursday, Jaleel extended an invitation to all Municipal Corporation commissioners to join the "join the Chicken Biryani and Mutton Korma party organized at my residence at 1 PM on August 15". The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri @Dev_Fadnavis, will also be present on this occasion. (India is a free and democratic country, and Maharashtra is not a dictator-ruled state). This party is being organized solely to remind those who still have not understood the meaning of freedom," he added in his post on X. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also slammed the Hyderabad municipal body's ban on meat sales, calling it "callous and unconstitutional". ALSO READ | Civic bodies are only following the meat ban imposed by Congress in 1988: CM Fadnavis "What's the connection between eating meat and celebrating Independence Day? 99% of Telangana's people eat meat. These meat bans violate people's right to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition, and religion," he said in a post on X. AIMIM leader slams CM Fadnavis He also hit out at chief minister Devendra Fadnavis over the matter and said that if the CM had directed the commissioner to withdraw the order, the issue would have ended there. "They say we can eat (meat) but it will not be made available in the market. What is the government trying to gain by issuing such orders?" Jaleel asked. Earlier on Wednesday, CM Fadnavis said the state government was not interested in regulating people's food choices, describing the whole row over meat shop closures as an "unnecessary" controversy. When it was pointed out that the ban on meat was imposed on the occasion of Janmashtami, the AIMIM leader went on to question whether the festival is being celebrated in selective districts only. "Hindus across the state are celebrating it. Had the government adopted a policy in this regard, then we would have respected it," he added. Jaleel further asked, "There are few over-enthusiastic municipal commissioners who issued these orders to make the government have only two festivals (Ramzan and Bakri Eid). Will the government shut the liquor shops on these two festivals of the Muslim community?" Row over meat sales ban Other than Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, municipal corporations in Nagpur, Nashik, and Malegaon also issued similar orders, resulting in controversy and protests over personal freedom. Other parties in the Opposition bloc have also criticised the move, with the BJP arguing that the policy of shutting down meat shops on Independence Day was first implemented in 1988 by the then chief minister, NCP(SP) supremo Sharad Pawar. The BJP asked whether the opposition would question the legendary politician about it. Congress workers were also seen protesting in Mumbai against the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation's order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day.

Nagaland Governor and former BJP leader L. Ganesan passes away at 80

L. Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland and former senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, passed away in Chennai on Friday (August 15, 2025) at the age of 80. He had earlier served as the Governor of Manipur and held the additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal. A bachelor, he had recently celebrated his 80th birthday in a grand manner in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin attended the event. A few days ago, Ganesan suffered a fall in the bathroom and sustained head injuries, which led to his demise. A native of Thanjavur district, Ganesan was a passionate admirer of Carnatic music and made it a point of attending the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru. His association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) began in his school days, with his family being closely connected to the organisation. 'He was a government employee, working as a Revenue Settlement Inspector, before resigning to become a full-time pracharak of the RSS. He worked primarily in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and rose to become the chief organiser of the RSS during the Emergency,' said sources in the RSS. 'His role in protecting the Hindu interest in Meenakshipuram religious conversions and Mandaikkadu communal riots were well appreciated by the nationalist leaders of yesteryears. His tireless efforts to bring peace and unity among Hindus in the caste nerve centres of Tamil Nadu, such as Puliangudi and Ramanathapuram, bore fruit, leading to harmony among the people,' says the website of the Nagaland Governor's office. In 1991, he was deputed to help build the BJP in Tamil Nadu and subsequently resigned from the RSS as its deputy organising secretary to focus on the party work. He went on to serve as the general secretary and president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit. At the national level, he held the position of BJP vice-president. He contested twice, albeit unsuccessfully, from the South Chennai Lok Sabha constituency. In 2017, Mr. Ganesan was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, following the appointment of the then MP, Najma Heptulla, as the Governor of Manipur. Mr. Ganesan also served as the editor of the BJP's Tamil organ Ore Naadu (One Nation) and was the founding president of Pottramarai ('Golden Lotus'), an organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting Tamil scholars across the globe.
