TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors on Thursday announced an 84% year-on-year decline in its first-quarter operating profit, a sign of the "unprecedentedly challenging conditions" that followed U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of a 25% tariff on cars in April.
The Japanese automaker's operating profit fell to 5.6 billion yen ($35.5 million) in the April-June quarter, in part because of a 14.4 billion yen tariff impact. The company does not have a car assembly plant in the U.S., making it reliant on foreign production bases for sales in that market.

Opposition Parties Seek to Scrap Extra Gasoline Tax Nov. 1

News from Japan Politics Jul 29, 2025 14:22 (JST) Tokyo, July 29 (Jiji Press)--Eight Japanese opposition parties on Tuesday agreed to push for scrapping the provisional add-on gasoline tax rate on Nov. 1. At the day's meeting among policy chiefs, the parties, including the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, affirmed a plan to jointly submit a bill to implement such a tax cut during an extraordinary parliamentary session slated to be convened Friday. The opposition parties are hoping to raise public expectations for political change, as the ruling coalition no longer holds a majority in either chamber of parliament after losing their combined majority in the July 20 election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber. Meanwhile, the CDP is aiming to foster trust among opposition parties. Tuesday's meeting was attended by policy chiefs from the CDP, Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party), the Democratic Party for the People, Sanseito, Reiwa Shinsengumi, the Japanese Communist Party, the Conservative Party of Japan and the Social Democratic Party. Japan MOF Upgrades Economic View on Okinawa

News from Japan Economy Jul 29, 2025 13:22 (JST) Tokyo, July 29 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Ministry of Finance on Tuesday upgraded its economic view on the southernmost region of Okinawa, reflecting robust vehicle sales and an increase in Japanese and foreign tourists. In a quarterly report, the ministry left its view on the other 10 regions unchanged. It also adopted the same national economic assessment for the ninth straight quarter, saying that the economy remains on a gradual recovery trend. The MOF's local finance bureaus across the country reviewed regional economic situations in the past three months and reported the outcome at a meeting of local bureau heads Tuesday. By category, the government upgraded its view on private consumption in the Tohoku northeastern region and Okinawa while revising down that in the southwestern region comprising Fukuoka and two nearby prefectures. Regarding production, the ministry downgraded its view on the Hokuriku central region and the Kinki western region but upgraded that on Okinawa. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press
