Modi Champions Farmers in Trump Rift as State Election Looms

Bloomberg2 days ago
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling party have seized on growing friction with US President Donald Trump to bolster support from farmers ahead of a crucial state election.
A day after Trump stunned New Delhi by slapping 50% tariffs on the nation's exports to the US, Modi promised supporters he'd protect the interests of farmers, even if it means he pays a personal price for it. Modi's top aides, including his trade minister, have signaled India won't give in to US pressure to open up its agriculture and dairy markets to American imports. On Tuesday, leading farmer groups met with India's agriculture minister in New Delhi to pledge support to the government.

California Just Gave Their Redistricting Bill A Very Good Name With Very Good Branding

California is getting new election maps. Trump didn't respond, so he started tweeting like him: "DONALD TRUMP, THE LOWEST POLLING PRESIDENT IN RECENT HISTORY, THIS IS YOUR SECOND-TO-LAST WARNING!!! (THE NEXT ONE IS THE LAST ONE!). STAND DOWN NOW OR CALIFORNIA WILL COUNTER-STRIKE (LEGALLY!) TO DESTROY YOUR ILLEGAL CROOKED MAPS IN RED STATES." And ding ding, time ran out. Trump never responded. Today, he announced he would be going through with that redistricting. And now, we've got a name for it. It's the "Election Rigging Response Act." As this person said, "Gavin's 'Election Rigging Response Act' may just be the most beautiful bill name I've ever heard." So, what do you think? Would you vote yes?

RFK Jr. Resurrects Decades-Old Vaccine Safety Task Force

The Department of Health and Human Services is resurrecting a decades-old vaccine safety task force, the agency announced Thursday. It's a full-circle moment for HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who claimed after the 2016 election that President Donald Trump had asked him to chair a 'commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity' after a meeting at Trump Tower. During Trump's first term, that promise fell by the wayside and the panel didn't come to fruition.

Is Anybody Fighting Back in This Trade War?

William Clayton, a businessman who served successive US presidents and became one of the chief architects of the Marshall Plan, was no fan of tariffs. He rated the barriers erected during the Great Depression as one of the great crimes of the century. It's hard to imagine that Clayton, who believed that free trade was as important to prosperity as American aid and security guarantees, would remotely approve of Donald Trump's efforts to reshape commerce. This White House-engineered upheaval, which pushed tariffs to levels unseen since the Smoot-Hawley law of 1930, will be costly — even if the full price isn't immediately apparent. The global economy hasn't suffered some of the direst consequences that were predicted in April. Demand for US assets has held up, despite the superficial allure of the 'sell America' narrative. The International Monetary Fund doubts growth will suddenly crater, and inflation hasn't taken off. Has a bullet been dodged or is shock delaying the pain?
