
‘We do have to take it seriously': How Maritime manufacturers, exporters could be impacted by new tariff threats

U.S. President Donald Trump sent a letter Thursday informing Prime Minister Mark Carney of a 35 per cent tariff that will be imposed on exports from Canada to the U.S.
The new levies, which are in addition to several tariffs imposed since March, would come into effect on Aug. 1. Trump also said the tariff would rise if Canada retaliated with new tariffs of its own.
'I think it's fair to say we do have to take it seriously,' Ron Marcolin, vice president of Canadian Manufacturers and Exports (CME) for New Brunswick and P.E.I., told CTV Atlantic's Todd Battis.
Marcolin says since early March, Canada has received a series of threats from Trump about imposing tariffs and the tariffs that have been put in place are already affecting businesses in the Maritimes.
'Unfortunately, it is a bit of a game, it's a very serious and high stakes game,' said Marcolin. 'But we know that he can change his mind and is prone to changing his mind, that's part of his strategy.'
On top of the newly announced 35 per cent tariff, Canada now faces a 25 per cent tariff on most Canadian goods, 10 per cent tariffs on energy sources, 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum and 25 per cent tariffs on autos and auto parts.
Along with the announcement on Thursday, Trump announced a 50 per cent tariff on copper.
'The unique thing about copper is Americans need Canadian copper,' Marcolin said. 'They need Canadian copper concentrate so ultimately they can refine it and smelt it.'
Marcolin said this tariff will impact the copper customers in the U.S.
As for manufacturers in the Maritimes, Marcolin said they will begin to look for suppliers elsewhere to diversify their markets.
'[Companies] look at say, shipping lanes out of Halifax and out of the Port of Saint John, looking to Europe in particular,' Marcolin said.
Government agencies are also available to help exporters in the Maritimes who don't have the knowledge of exporting to Europe, Marcolin said.

(Christinne Muschi/The Canadian Press) Quebecers are rethinking their alcohol consumption, not to deprive themselves, but to make better choices, according to the 'A3 Index,' which paints a picture of consumer habits and preferences based on the results of a Léger survey. The survey was commissioned by A3, a group of 85 wine, beer, and spirits agencies. 'Habits are changing. In fact, people are consuming better, but not necessarily more. They are sensitive to different criteria or different elements of products, such as origin, environmental certifications, sugar content, and alcohol content. So they are consuming differently,' says A3 Executive Director Catherine Lessard. She points out that this observation is 'in line with the trends observed by the SAQ: consumers are drinking more thoughtfully, seeking out quality products.' The survey results show that quality is indeed the most important factor (82 per cent). As for the country of origin, this criterion is considered important by 57 per cent of customers. This is the second year that this group has surveyed the public. This time, questions about environmental and health factors were added. The findings show that more than a third of Quebecers regularly check the sugar content of their alcoholic beverages (35 per cent check the alcohol content for health reasons). For environmental reasons, a minority of people systematically check whether the products they buy are organic (18 per cent). A realistic guide to retirement for mid- or late-life homebuyers
For a growing number of Canadians, homeownership has become a mid-life milestone instead of a young adult rite of passage. But what happens when your mortgage payoff date is uncomfortably close to your retirement age or, even worse, after it? According to a 2025 Royal LePage survey, 29 per cent of Canadians nearing retirement will be making mortgage payments after they've stopped working. These unexpected costs could derail your plan to buy a home 'Some people will say it's okay to have a mortgage in retirement. Well, not really,' says Kurt Rosentreter, a Toronto-based certified financial planner. In that case, at a time when your income drops off, a greater proportion of it would need to cover debt payments, he adds. Here are five practical, expert-backed strategies to chart a more flexible retirement, even if you came late into your homeownership era. One of the most straightforward solutions is to get aggressive with your debt before you retire. Accelerating biweekly payments, such as paying half your monthly mortgage every two weeks instead of monthly, can reduce your amortization by a few years and save you thousands in interest, says Shannon Tatlock, a certified financial planner based in Moncton, N.B. This strategy becomes more powerful if you direct windfalls like bonuses, tax refunds or side hustle income toward your mortgage. 'When you go to renew, hopefully the mortgage will be less, and your payment will come down,' Ms. Tatlock adds. Mr. Rosentreter agrees and says it should be easier to do when you're at your peak income levels in your 50s – and easier still if you have a partner who's also employed. Financial facelift: Can Romesh, 54, and Gayle, 52, retire in a decade if they spend $125,000 on a basement renovation? But as Vancouver-based certified financial planner Steve Bridge points out, tough choices are inevitable, especially if you're juggling kids' education, car repairs, groceries, gifts and retirement savings. What it comes down to is making more or spending less. 'Get real about the numbers,' Mr. Bridge said. Downsizing is often viewed as a retirement fallback: sell the family home, buy something smaller, pocket the difference. The Royal LePage survey found that 46 per cent of Canadians nearing retirement plan to downsize within two years of leaving full-time work. But it's not always simple or profitable. Planning to downsize means you're counting on your home value going up – and that's not guaranteed, says Mr. Rosentreter. As an example, he says, let's say you sell your two-million-dollar home in Toronto and buy a condo for a million. That leaves you $500,000. 'Is that enough to make your retirement work? Doesn't sound like a lot of money. The whole downsizing is a bit of a farce,' he says. It's also emotionally complicated. People often underestimate the psychological cost of moving out of a familiar space, letting go of a garden, a basement workshop. Mr. Rosentreter says he rarely includes downsizing in his clients' financial plans unless it's post-widowhood, when needs and expenses truly change. 'Otherwise, people use it as an excuse not to save,' he adds. For those willing to downsize, relocating to a more affordable region can free up cash. 'If you're making $80,000 a year and trying to buy in Toronto, that's not realistic,' Mr. Rosentreter says. 'Move far away and get over the fact that you're not going to live near [family].' Relocating to a smaller town or even a different province can lower your cost of living, reduce your property taxes and lead to a lifestyle that's more financially sustainable. Of course, it's not for everyone. The social cost of leaving behind family, friends or cultural communities needs to be factored in alongside the savings. 'That's hard love, but it needs to be said,' said Mr. Rosentreter. One way to cut costs or create new income streams is by sharing your space. That could mean living with friends, welcoming adult children back home to help with payments or renting out a basement suite. Opinion: I want a home, not an investment It may not be ideal if you value personal space, but it can be practical. Shared living lowers utility bills and your bottom line, with the bonus of also making you less isolated. Mr. Bridge believes people need to make choices that prioritize saving. 'Would I be willing to move somewhere else? Would I be willing to bring in more income? Could we bring a student in? Could we bring a renter in?' Many of Ms. Tatlock's clients are transitioning into retirement with a job they enjoy – instead of one that they have to work to pay the bills. Some turn lifelong hobbies into small income streams. Others scale back from full-time jobs into flexible contract roles, consulting gigs or seasonal work. She recalls one gentleman she worked with running a home garage doing tire changes after retiring from a demanding job as a mechanic for FedEx. 'He's still earning money every single month. He's just doing what he wants to,' Ms. Tatlock said. Mr. Rosentreter says he still sees a cultural expectation among his clients to retire early and never work again. 'But then the financial reality, when they sit down with me, is that you're dreaming,' he says. 'You had kids later in life, you got this 30-year mortgage amortization, you're not ready to retire at 55 to 60.' He adds the caveat that this is all health permitting and not something you can count on. The bottom line: 'You've got to be realistic.'

Trump officials defend deportation campaign after California farm raid leaves one worker dead
Federal officials on Sunday defended President Donald Trump's escalating campaign to deport immigrants in the U.S. illegally, including a California farm raid that left one worker dead, and said the administration would appeal a ruling to halt some of its more aggressive tactics. Trump has vowed to deport millions of people in the country illegally and has executed raids at work sites including farms that were largely exempted from enforcement during his first term. The administration has faced dozens of lawsuits across the country for its tactics. Farm worker dead, hundreds arrested in U.S. farm raid Department of Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem and Trump's border czar Tom Homan said on Sunday that the administration would appeal a federal judge's Friday ruling that blocked the administration from detaining immigrants based solely on racial profiling and denying detained people the right to speak with a lawyer. In interviews with Fox News and NBC, Noem criticized the judge, an appointee of Democratic former President Joe Biden, and denied that the administration had used the tactics described in the lawsuit. 'We will appeal, and we will win,' she said in an interview on Fox News Sunday. Homan said on CNN's State of the Union that physical characteristics could be one factor among multiple that would establish a reasonable suspicion that a person lacked legal immigration status, allowing federal officers to stop someone. During a chaotic raid and resulting protests on Thursday at two sites of a cannabis farm in Southern California, 319 people in the U.S. illegally were detained and federal officers encountered 14 migrant minors, Noem said on NBC News' Meet the Press. Workers were injured during the raid and one later died from his injuries, according to the United Farm Workers. Homan told CNN that the farmworker's death was tragic but that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were doing their jobs and executing criminal search warrants. 'It's always unfortunate when there's deaths,' he said. U.S. Senator Alex Padilla said on CNN that federal agents are using racial profiling to arrest people. Padilla, a California Democrat and the son of Mexican immigrants, was forcibly removed from a Noem press conference in Los Angeles in June and handcuffed after trying to ask a question. Padilla said he had spoken with the UFW about the farmworker who died in the ICE raid. He said a steep arrest quota imposed by the Trump administration in late May had led to more aggressive and dangerous enforcement. 'It's causing ICE to get more aggressive, more cruel, more extreme, and these are the results,' Padilla said. 'It's people dying.'
